I started the LOC 1 series Magnum yesterday. I decided I'd build it with 5 minute epoxy. It's about 75% done as I had other things to do throughout the day. I got the fillets to do and the payload section to do.
 
Launch report.

Estes Alpha, A8-3: Success. First rocket I ever built, making its annual anniversary flight. 24 years old and still flyable.

Estes Venus Probe, D13-4W reloadable: Partial Success. The up part was great on the reloadable D, but the ejection ripped the parachute off the booster, which core sampled. Some centering rings came loose and the skinny lower tube telescoped into the upper tube, but surprisingly there was little crumpling. The booster is definitely repairable.

Scratch Built Micro Der Red Max, Micro Maxx 2: Success. Up and down, streamer deployed, good flight.

Estes Baby Bertha (named Hummingbird), B6-4: Success. This rocket was built by my wife.

Rocketarium Cerberus, 3X B6-4: Success. Took three tries to get it off the pad, but all three motors lit and it flew much better than it did on three A's.

Madcow Torrent, H170M: Success. Good flight on an Aerotech white sparky. Probably the last flight of this rocket for a while as I am out of motors appropriately sized for it.

Estes Super Big Bertha, E16-4: Success. Nice to have a 29mm BP motor that didn't cato.

Estes Multi-Roc, B6-0 to A8-5: Success. Tried a two-stage flight without the glider first. Not sure if I would want to fly two-stage with the glider. Gliders that go too high have a bad tendency to just get lost.

Doorknob and Orbital Transport scrubbed due to time.
Somebody get this man a camera... 🤔 :rolleyes:;)
 
All my attempts at rocket photography have ended in crappy pictures and a flight I didn't really get to see much of. Now I just fly and hope a flight of mine gets put on MDRA's YouTube channel.

That was a nice flight. Deployment was a little shakey and had enough altitude to come out. I will take videos of your flights at MDRA when we go. No problem with that. I have to check your post for this weekend.
 
That's the ticket. IMO, one should never have to video or photograph one's own launches. You watch the flight and someone else can use the camera. If there's no one available, then we voyeurs will just have to do without.
Correct. It is difficult to do. Last launch we did Antares JS did the launching and I did the Video's. Turned out great.Snapshot 2 (6-10-2021 11-47 PM).png
 
I visited the local hobby shop for the first time in what seems like an eternity. The rocket section seemed a little depleted, but it was still there and a few people, younger people even, were browsing through it.

That looks like Hub Hobby in Little Canada MN. I try to visit them or the hub hobby off Penn.

Attended the high power launch Saturday. I had some high flying projects prepped but the wind was more then I hoped for. So I flew Spiralized Blue Tip on a AT I 211w-14 to 3100'. I also flew my scratch built Mock 2 on a AT I 161w-14 to 4100'.

The U of M had a few cool projects they flew. A spectacular CTI N 4100 red did not leave the pad.

And they had a experimental O 3000 motor that was amazing, long burn.

Bummed because I was unable to attend "June Swoosh" in Pasco Washington this weekend, but did get my SBR Bullet completed. Also E-mailed Apogee rockets to see if the latest (not yet released 10.3) up-date will correct an issue with RS crashing when I try to open a 3D window or "Prepare for launch" for this rocket (I had contacted them back in April and they said the file opens fine in Mac, but it does crash in Windows--guess which one I have).

Youch! That sounds and looks like a good way to burn up a rocket! Was it OK?

The bug is in Windows. It has an anti-violence feature that will shut down apps when they open inappropriate content, but the algorithm is flawed and can't distinguish this rocket from a real bullet. (I know, that really does sound more like a thing Macs would have, but I guess it is what it is.)
 
over teh week-end:

Gave the rocket I painted about 2 weeks ago a 2nd coat.. its now a bit more yellow-er..
Sat in on a very cool development meeting for the 'Launch Canada' events..
 
Sanded the aft centering ring on a 4" FWFG AstrobeeD. I used a bolt on 75mm Aeropack and epoxied the threaded inserts onto the aft ring so I had to true that up so it'll fit in the BT properly.

Next is to rough up the upper part of the MMT and epoxy the upper 2 rings.

My L3 will be a 6" version so this it's kinda practice for that. 4" and 75mm MMT with dual deploy will handle a M if I wanted to. The 6" L3 version with a 98mm MMT will take well into the N range. L3 will hopefully be some time in 2022
 
Working on getting a log file out of Ardupilot to post on a forum where there are people that know more about it than me. Hopefully they can see why I can't get location data out of my NMEA sentences.

Discussed PCB stackup selection with my university team that I mentor.

Also modeling a pitot-static tube mount for measuring airspeed in my Vertical Trajectory System. Sketching it up in SolidWorks for SLA printing on a resin printer. Slow progress on the CAD.
 
I'm building an Estes Antar. I finished assembling it over the weekend and I now have it primed with 3 coats of Zinsser B-I-N primer. I sanded it for the final paint. I ordered up some Createx paints in silver, off-white, and emerald green. They should show up today or tomorrow. I'm going to airbrush it so I'll be doing a fair amount of masking during the process.

I also bought a newer type of sandpaper just to give it a try. It is an open mesh type made by Mirka called Abranet. I bought a pack with different grits, from P80 to P600. Because it is open mesh with the abrasive bonded to the lattice on one side I can clean it by blowing air through it. It cleans up great and doesn't clog up. :clapping: They also make disks for orbital sanders, which I want to try. It is more expensive than regular sandpaper but should last a lot longer.
