I’m hip to Adam’s point - I could add “Kluge” to my name, it’s kind of what I do - duct tape is not great stuff, gaffer’s tape is WAAAYYY better at doing what most people typically use duct tape for. But duct tape is good enough most times to get the job done, it’s cheap, it’s readily available, it’s a “known thing” so you can use it to solve a problem without having to deal with the added “brain-load” of figuring out what it’s going to do or not do. Duct tape, JB Weld, CA, zip ties, ratchet straps, safety wire, clamping pliers - the stuff you can fix something with just well enough to complete the task or event.

Lol! Duct did play a part in getting my marriage started. Way back then I was a rather avid motorcyclist and camper - neither so much anymore - so our honeymoon plan was a motorcycle camping trip. We weren’t going very far, just an easy trip through southern Ohio with stops in the Hocking Hills, King’s Island, AF Museum and finally the State Fair on our way home. I’d bought a quality set of soft bags from Eclipse but failed to try them on the bike until...the morning of the wedding. So of course the rear turn signals were right in the way of the bags if you wanted a passenger - not much of honeymoon without the bride! So I’m rather desperately relocating the rear signals to the luggage rack frame, cutting a hunk of muffler strapping to make a bracket when I slipped with the hacksaw slicing into the edge of my thumb - blood everywhere! No first aid kit handy in my neighbor’s workshop, naturally, but plenty of rags and...duct tape! So I rigged a decent bandage, good enough to keep me from making a gory puddle on the floor, and finished making the brackets. After I moved the turn signals I cleaned up the wound in my folk’s bathroom, whipped out the CA to seal the cut, put on a more conventional bandage and was only 15 minutes later to the church than I’d planned (which, regardless of how my wife tells the story, was PLENTY early enough to get into my tux). That bike is long gone, still have the bags (haven’t used them in 10 years or so but they’re in great shape!) and a nice scar on my hand too. Oh, and I still have the wife as well

Duct tape sort of fits the any tool can be a hammer philosophy. He's right in that it can get a job done but there are better options. Duct tape's big thing is it went from a thing to sort of a cultural touch stone.

Re: Scott's post above. For me the main attraction of gaffer's tape, what makes it worth $10 a roll or thereabouts, is that it can be removed. WITHOUT leaving adhesive, strings, etc. If I'm sure I won't remove whatever-it-is, I'll use duct tape. If there's even a chance I might want to remove it...gaffer's.

Red Green has at least two booklets out. I can't lay hands on them at the moment but at least one was some of his poetry, something like this:

It took ten shots to bring it down.
But now it hangs in a place of honor,

With all the other stop signs.
