I was looking on the estes site about the boosters they have and i cant seem to find any info on the diameter of the boosters. I want to put one on my estes vapor that i have a 29mm motor upgrade on but i dont know if the pro series 2 booster or the bt60 booster fits. Please help!
 
I also have the hobby lobby olympus that is a bt65 (rare size) w/29 mm upgrade that i would like to put the booster on as well. Do i just need the screw on motor retainer? If so which ones do i get?
 
Pro series II booster 9752 29mm is roughly 2.0" diameter - an oddball size that fits only a few rockets that I know of (Majestic being one of them).
 
Well it says that it fits pro series 2 and there are a couple bt60 size pro series 2
 
I guess I could go ahead and get the bt60 booster but the biggest motor I can fit in it is a D12 0 and the main motor is going to be a 29 mm f or g so I don't know if the d is going to be strong enough to get it up a few hundred feet or not.
 
Not to mention I'm going to have a dual deployment eBay in the middle of the rocket and two parachutes
 
To use a booster your aft centering ring has to be inset a couple of inches. How much depends on what size the booster is. You could also make your own with some body tube a coupler and motor mount.
 
The pro series booster is 2 inches in diameter so it won't work. Well, I guess you could use a transition at the top of it... I believe the BT60 booster is the same diameter as the BT60 based Vapor but I'm not sure of how it "attaches" to the top stage. It seems to have a plastic piece that is separate that somehow connects the booster to the to the rocket. I would think that if you haven't built the Vapor yet you would be able to make whatever mods required (if any) to use the BT60 booster with the vapor. We can always help you figure it out if you need help.

Ah, I just read about the BT60 only using up to a 24mm motor in that booster. You could always build one that could use a 29mm mount. You realize that if you are planning on gap staging you can only use black powder motors, right? 29mm Estes E and F motors are hard to find in stores and incur a hazmat fee when you order them. 24mm can be bought at Hobby Lobby. Just something to consider

Oh, and something else. Black powder 29mm motors aren't very fast and you can run into problems with safe launch speeds becasue of rocket wieght. A booster adds weight. That pro series booster is really only safe to use on the smaller 2" rockets like the Majestic and Prowler.

The BT-55 and BT-60 boosters come with "stager" rings which are intended to replace the screw-on motor retainers of the BT-55 and BT-60-based ARF models they were designed to work with.

Once could possibly cut down JT-60 stage coupler glue it into the top of a Booster-60 and then, assuming the lower centering ring on the Vapor's motor mount was far enough forward, use that to attach the booster. You might only want a short length (~1/4 inch) of this stage coupler to mate with the base of the Vapor so that it's not too difficult to separate at staging. The Boosted Bertha's booster attaches to the sustainer like this, and coupler, glued to the booster and slid into place at the bottom of the sustainer, does not project very far.

The Vapor, being basically a 24mm motor version of the Star Orbiter, would probably be light enough (if not "improved" much) to get going with a D12-0 below it in a Booster-60. Would be fun to see from a safe distance 😮
 
The D12 is quite a motor but I'm not sure it will lift a Vapor that has been modified to a 29mm mount and with a dual deploy av bay with two chutes.

Not meaning to derail the thread, but what I'm about to write can be adapted to the Vapor as well as the Olympus.

AtomicStorm, you are going to run into the same issue as the Op with the weight issue, This is what I would suggest... Because the Olympus is an odd size buy two kits and build one stock except put the aft centering ring 1 inch from the end. Put the middle ring at 2 1/4. Take the second kit and build it per the instructions right up until you get to the step to attach the launch lug. Instead of attaching a launch lug, cut the body tube to somewhere around 5 inches. Now you need a coupler and you can use the plastic tube adapter for that. Cut it at 3/4" above the raised ring and 7/8" below the ring. Scuff the bottom 7/8" up real well and epoxy into the top of the booster. Sand the top 3/4" if needed to it slips into the back of the upper stage. There you go with a two stage Olympus.

Added: Concerning sanding, the fit should be snug enough that it doesn't fall away without an engine installed but does if an engine is installed

I would also suggest papering the booster fins for strength since it is tumble recovery

I guess im just going to buy some couplers and some balsa sheets and make my own boosters. Also i have some reducers that are 29 to 24mm. So i wonder if i made the booster with a 29mm motor mount and put a reducer in it with a d120 if it would still function correctly with the reducer in it?
 
Reduction of diameter from 29mm to 24mm should have no effect on staging as long as the top of the booster motor is exposed.
im sure it matters how close the motors are together. Haven't put together a dual stage yet.
 
I've read here on the forum that someone staged a motor from 51" iirc. I've staged motors from several inches. The flame from a booster motor is quite impressive.

Wow that is impressive. So 1 or 2" should be ok on a d or e size motor im guessing.

I bought one for my pro series ii Star orbiter. And it doesn't fit so now i will buy the Majestic to use the booster
 
If you can somehow frankenrocket them together you would get 20 extra bonus cool points.

You'll love it! I fly that combo with an E16-0 in the booster and a F15-6 in the sustainer with a JL chute release

Im trying to take my north coast lazor hawk and make the dummy bossters and make them real and turn it to a 3 motor cluser rocket the main motor is a large 29mm G i think i should make the boosters 29mm f15-0

I wouldnt make the boosters too big, maybe d's because 2 extra 29mm motors, ur talking a lot of weight. But i would still definitely like to see it go up :)
