I'm amused that everyone is focusing on the flame color. That's just an artifact of the way I generated the image. Original flame was red, but it mixed with a dark blue background to become purple. In hindsight, I can think of a better way to do the flame in the future so that it'll be a bit more "true", although it'd be more effort and I probably wouldn't bother.

[hangs head] Sorry about that. I'm an expert thread derailer, apparently.

You Oklahomans talk funny!

From the article

The greatest physical threat posed to noodlers, however, comes from other forms of aquatic life found in catfish holes. Far more dangerous than catfish are alligators, snakes, beavers, muskrats and snapping turtles, who will take over abandoned catfish holes as homes of their own. Deaths have been reported in many states, most notably Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana as the wildlife is particularly stacked against human entry in waters greater than three foot depth. More than one death in a singular incident was reported in Oklahoma in 2009 and later confirmed by Field and Stream, those deaths were due to a nearby dam structure causing surging water currents that overpowered noodling anglers. Both men involved during the practice had been confirmed as noodling when they were killed.[8][9] Neither of the deceased Oklahoma individuals were determined to be wearing life safety vests or flotation devices when their bodies were found according to Oklahoma State troopers.

If the strakes bridging that gap amidships were a little bigger, they might serve as fins in disguise for a second stage. With the red section remaining on the booster, the fins extend well back of where the sustainer motor mount would be, and with six of them (it looks like there are six, yes?) they really might not need to grow much at all.

Here's a variant, which I think is probably better:

I haven't really gotten the effect I was hoping for with the alternating-color strakes.

I did have some similar 2-stage thoughts while working on this; I will hopefully come back to that later.

Very similar outline to the star orbiter, but with cores!
Apparently, every one of my new designs must have cores.

I wasn't thinking in terms of plasma cores for this one. Rather, the idea was that three strakes are "connected" to the front part, and three are connected to the rear, and the two pieces slide apart to reveal the core inside (whatever that is). The concept doesn't make much real-world sense, but I thought it might look cool.

As shown, it doesn't really convey that concept all that well, although it looks decent. Maybe the strakes should be a different shape, or positioned slightly differently, to capture what I was after, dunno.

By the way, this whole thing really originated from my ongoing desire to have a design with white up front and dark in back, which is a great look and less common than the reverse. I don't have any rockets with this type of color scheme yet. Plasma Dart comes close, sort of (and now I notice quite a bit more resemblance to this rocket than I would like.)

Great minds, and all that.

I did notice the alternating colors, but that just looked like a transitional part of the color scheme, and didn't suggest the alternating attachments. I'm not so sure that alternating strake shapes would really do any better. But if you build it that way, either as a staging break or the separation point for recovery, then it'll be obvious (obviously) to anyone seeing it.

@neil_w You should do a sim with all the strakes attached to the top & see if there is enough "fin" to be stable. If not you can incrementally up the size of the fins until you do.

Here's a 2-stage version:

The required enlargement of the sustainer fins makes it look a little more traditional (albeit nice). And here's what the sustainer looks like on its own:

I don't think I would trust those fins to survive boost *or* landing.

Boost, sure. Landing? Yeah, maybe not. If they're plywood and TTW, maybe.

What if you make them longer and with less span? They'd go back to being disguised as strakes, and they'd both see more impact force and (👎) and have more length for fin tabs (👍).

Also, while my engineering brain doesn't like the look of the sustainer tail with those long cantilever fins, my "Cool rocket!" brain loves it.
