When I was working at NSSl, one of the researchers had a balloon-born lightning research project.

One of the two "diamonds" at the end has a motor which rotates the diamond. This causes the whole thing to rotate on the horizontal axis. On one of the launches (actually *after* the launch), when the balloon had popped, the unit came down on an intersection of two busy streets in Salt Lake City. Really freaked a bunch of people out. With the motor still spinning the diamond, the unit sat there flopping around. Bomb squad and SWAT called out. Took a lot of explaining to get the unit back, and stay out of jail.

Hmmm, I’m going to assume you meant the NSSL in Norman? And if that assumption is correct, when were you there? My wife worked there for a time.....

Nice, a bit after her, then. She was there mid-90’s, 95-97 range, can’t recall exactly, and she’s sleeping so I can’t ask! Well, I could, but I haven’t lasted through 25 years of marriage by being stupid! 😂:headspinning:

Ahaha, let's hope it's not you. I've already submitted new information to the news. We have revealed the identity of the person who launched the balloon; he is known as PayLoad and confessed on the rocketryforum.com forum. We are trying to find his real name and are trying to "find him by IP". This is going to be a lot of fun, friend.

Congratulations! You win the award for strangest ever first post. And on a thread that’s six months old. Weird.
