It's expected, but funny anyway, how the stuff around the craft is in the scan. "Here's a fancy 3D scan of my boat, including the blue barrel that goes with it."

And one of our team's hard hat, not to mention the scanner case we lugged all the way into the boat...

Also funny is unintended images. The scanner takes all the measurements, then goes back and takes digital pictures and extrapolates the point colors from the images. One of of the scans, I was moving around while it was scanning, so in the final picture, my high-viz vest is plastered all over the side of the boat.

Tried to get my phone working, but fate intervened. This story goes back at least a week, but tonight was real good times.

-My old phone's screen starting freaking out and the screen began separating from the body, so I made an appointment to have it looked at - I had to wait 4 days to get in
-When I went in they told me I had a "swollen battery," which meant that it could have exploded at any time, so they took it in the back and said they would remove the SIM card and give me my charging cord back
-They ordered a new phone, which they said "might" arrive before Christmas, but it didn't - they said they would put my old SIM card in the new phone so I could just leave it there
- I received an email notification that the new phone had arrived and I needed to make an appointment to pick it up. The next availability was 5 days out
-I tried to call the store to find out if I could pick the phone up earlier, but the magic "0" didn't work and the automated assistant understood nothing I said - whenever I put the word "phone" in the phrase, such as "phone pickup" or "phone repair" it would say "you want to buy a new phone, ok" - I gave up and waited for the appointment (since I had to make a last minute appointment I had to go somewhere about 1/2 hour away, so just "stopping in to see" would have taken some time)
-Picked up the new phone tonight, but they did not keep my SIM card nor my charger cord, they said they were probably both shipped with the damaged phone - so I had to go to the carrier and get a SIM card to set the phone up
-Rushed to the carrier .8 miles away and they closed in 15 minutes - made it in time
-Carrier looked up the phone serial number and they said it was coming up as already registered so they couldn't help me and couldn't give me a SIM card
-Went back to where I picked up the new phone and they said the carrier should have known that the phone would already show up as registered - all they needed to do was to put the SIM card in and register it, but the carrier had closed by that time
-Went home and wept

Our holiday to the Blue Mountains has been cut short. A covid outbreak in that state has caused my state to close the borders to people from NSW. We quickly packed the car and drove back 11 hours yesterday. Permits were required at the border. We are currently waiting to get tested at a testing station, and have been here nearly three hours now. After we go home from here we are to isolate at home for 14 days:(. This is even though we were only in low risk areas.

FYI our state was covid free for 61 days until 8 cases from testing yesterday.

[EDIT] covid tests came back negative. We get another on day 11.

At least Australia takes the pandemic seriously, unlike some *other* countries

Got a spinal cord stimulator surgically implanted. Time to look for vulnerabilities in its bluetooth software stack ;)
Just don't do anything really aggressive when you poke at the device. We don't want to lose another rocketeer!

Thanks for that link, I love that song.

Is your new obsession that song, Yes, or symphonic concert videos, or.... ?
being a trumpet player in the early 70's I mostly listened to all horn bands, so I missed out on all of the progressive rock music such as the bands Yes, and Genesis, King Crimson, etc. so I recently was on another audio form that had a thread about good bass hits and somebody mentioned the Genesis song called , "Firth of Fifth," so I went on YouTube and found the album cut and then clicked on the other versions of it and found the Steve Hackett , "Genesis Revisited" videos and then that started me on the progressive rock kick. discovering new music keeps me enthusiast about life

If you're OK with the slightly heavier rock end of things, be sure to check out Kansas from their peak period: Masque, Leftoverture, and Point of Know Return (*especially* Leftoverture, my tied-for-favorite album of all time). They started me on my prog-rock journey, still my favorite band.

Oh yeah, I have that Lp, listening to it on Youtube now with my Audioquest Cobalt DAC plugged into the Chromebook with Periodic Audio earbuds in my personal ear molds...cranked up. My favorite Kansas song is "The Wall"
thanks

Not quite...

Victoria closed its border with New South Wales.
Queensland closed its border with New South Wales.
South Australia closed its border with New South Wales.

New South Wales is run by people who consider the state does not exist outside the capital, Sydney. These same people seem to think things like fireworks are more important than public safety. In fact, they held a massive fireworks display last year when most of the East coast was suffering through the worst bushfires in history.

Sorry, but at least one state in Australia isn't taking Covid seriously. I'm looking at you, Gladys,

Further to yesterday's sunrise picture...

Fantastic day. There were a total of six people on the beach for sunrise, four of us and two socially distancing others. Too cold to swim straight away, so had some celebratory drinks.

Incoming tide washed up heaps of Bluebottle (Pacific Man-Of-War) jellyfish. I mean thousands.

IMG_6018.JPG

Their sting is extremely painful, but not deadly.

Incoming tide washed most of them back into the ocean, so later I got in my first swim of the year in the Pacific.

Off to a good start, 2021. Keep up the good work!

Today will be changing a tube in a split-rim wheel and catching up on the farm work I didn't do yesterday.

Just renewed my membership to AIAA. I am considering subscribing to the Journal of Guidance, Navigation and Control as well. Considering I am working on the Vertical Trajectory System it might be a couple of hundred AUD well spent.

We call those Portuguese Man of War here.
Got stung once as a kid, wasn't even in the water.
Playing in the sand, a wave washed over my feet, ouch.
Also have monthly box jellyfish infestations.
Lifeguards know exactly when they will be coming in, so they can warn beachgoers.
So many days after a full moon, or something like that.

Today I picked up tubs of nishime (chicken and root vegetables stew) and namasu (thin sliced radish, cucumbers and carrots in a vinegar brine) and two rolls of sushi from Zippy's Drive Inn. Traditional New Year's family fare.
Plus I'm lazy, don't want to cook from scratch. :D

Happy New Year everyone!

I think the Portugese MOW is bigger and possibly even nastier.

This was the day after the full moon. Well worth remembering.

Ah, just to be clear, the box jellyfish are on a regular monthly interval, the PMOW go wherever the wind and currents take them.
Are the fire alerts still up? Isn't it summer down in OZ?

Burn ban until prolly March. I have three prototypes to start testing, but I figure I need to catch up on farm work anyway.

I might do some painting in the meantime...

Very lovely shavings

Thank you! It crossed my mind during this project that there’s probably a market for artisanal packing excelsior made of beautiful wood shavings. For stupid expensive stuff no doubt. Fortunately, I’m not that evil.

Day 2 of 14 in isolation: started renovating the laundry. Have most of the stuff already so time to get this going. Removed the old laundry tub today. Also moved the drinks fridge out to the rear deck for now, and the dryer into the family room, to make a bit more room to work.

I live in Fairborn, Ohio, just up the road from Cincy where, as You know, they just adore Skyline and Gold Star chili. Skyline was designed by a Greek immigrant Gentleman as a Greek version of Chili. I haven't looked up the origin of Gold Star, yet Both are pretty much liked around this part ( southwest Ohio) Ohio, S. E. Indiana and parts of Kentucky. It's not my favorite either, but to each their own. Fwiw, I prefer a cracker crust, LOL! Cheers!
Way back in the middle ages when I was in college I visited a friend in Milwaukee. We went to a place that served chili on noodles. I still remember how god it was. I haven't seen or heard of it until now. I found a Cincy Chili recipe online & will most definitely give it a try. Thanks! :headspinning:

Turned some more spruce into excelsior. Almost done with shaping the second canoe paddle I’ve been working on for 6 months. I’m done with the plane now, just need to do some dremel work on the handle and some spikes have work on the shaft.

@boatgeek What kind of plane are you using? A number of years ago a friend from Japan was visiting the US and he gave me a gift of a Japanese hand plane. It has become my go to plane. Love it!

You may be on to something. But I must confess that my first thought thought was "Ooh, nice kindling."

slept 4 hours, now up at 3AM for the night. Sleeping is the biggest waste of time in a humans life span.
Sleep is ome of life's great pleasures.

A sharp one.
