Amazon releasing episodes of season 5 weekly is going to make me lose my mind. What is this, 1991? Maybe we should go back to living in caves, too.

/rant

If you haven’t yet, you should watch it. IMO, best sci-fi show ever made.

I'm waiting until the full season has been released before I start season 5. I've been through that weekly thing before and it's frustrating.

You are more disciplined than me. I’ve forgotten what is was like to have to wait 7 whole days to watch a show. It doesn’t help that this season is covering my favorite book.

I've just made it to the start of Season 3.

It is amazing, so glad for the recommendations I got here in the past. I too think it's the best TV sci-fi I've ever seen. The production quality is incredible for a TV show, and the opening credit sequence and theme music are so good that I never skip them. Trying to figure out how anything this great was on the TV network that brought us "Sharknado".

The hardest part is turning the TV off and actually going to sleep without watching "one more episode".

Season 4 is a slower-paced season, but its necessary to set up for season 5. The books did the same thing, a slow stretch that set up the next couple catastrophes, etc. :)

The books are very good, easy fast reads.

Agree on season 4 being slow, but that book was my least favorite (by far) too. It does serve to setup the coming storms. Though a few of the characters differ from the books and a few have slightly different roles, there are a couple composite type characters in the show too, the overall story arc is holding up nicely.

The casting is generally good too, I particularly like the characters and performances of Naomi and Drummer.

Last two seasons I ended up having to wait some extra months until they get the subtitle timing fixed. Super frustrating.

I find it impossible to choose one book or season over another, they are all OUTSTANDING! I have also found that listening to the Audible books preferable to reading with my tired eyes. Jefferson Mays does an outstanding job and he’s the voice actor for the entire series. There’s nothing worse than changing voice actors from book to book.

I'm glad I came across this thread because I was planning on binge watching this over the weekend, not realizing the full season wasn't released. Agree with the other posters that this is a well made, written and acted production. (Will probably give in to temptation and watch the first episode this weekend anyway).

My impression (not having read the books) is that the show is following the books fairly closely (obviously with less detail)?

It seems to vary. Some things pretty closely match the books, some things are composites, a few characters like Ashford are new, etc. But the overall storyline does parallel the books well enough.

My father in law keeps saying I need to watch it. But there are a lot of good shows out there, and I dont have time to watch them all.

I actually enjoy weekly release. Gives somehing to look forward to, prevents binge-watching (major plague for my peers)

I hadn't even realized there was a book series that want with the expanse. I'm only back on season 3 may have to pick up the books before I continue on with watching them.

More like a television series made from the books.

I got a smart TV for Xmas, I think it has a WiFi connection, so I can watch Amazon Prime through it. We'll see. Then I'll try to start S4 again.

Watched the first episode before christmas lunch/dinner. Definitely slow burn. Lots of background politics, characters to get familiar with, sparking conflicts, mysterious cop stuff. It sounds like it deserves brain attention, but these days I dont have a lot of time to just watch tv

You need 3 or 4 episodes to get locked in.

Yeah, the first season doesn't get rocking until episode 4 (CQB). Hang in there, there's more reward later on as well. :)

My son turned me on to the Expanse in season 1. Watched it pretty much week to week thru season 3. Saw some of season 4. For me continuity is absolutely necessary in this series so I'm starting over at the beginning. It's just as good the second time thru. Great series.

I see vague commercials but that's about all and the commercials really don't give you much of a clue what it's supposed to be about. Whoever does the writing for their ads should be fired. I'm not the least bit tempted even though I'm probably at the center of their target audience.

So, what is it about?

I would type out an answer for you but, it would take me several hours. I hate writing, something always gets lost in the translation from brain to fingers....
Anyhoot, check out the Wikipedia article (Here).

The wikipedia link above is good. Here's my own brief take.

Humans have colonized Mars, and to a lesser extent other planets and moons. The Asteroid belt is being mined for resources. Earth and Mars are at political odds with each other, engaged in an uneasy, cold war-like standoff. The Belters yearn for independence.

What throws everything into chaos is the discovery of a strange "protomolecule" of unknown origin, that could be turned into a powerful weapon, or something else. No one fully understands it, and everyone wants to get their hands on it.

The story follows many threads (which all tie together), but centers on the crew of one ship who somehow seem to find themselves in the middle of most of the action.

It's a classic space opera. It's not really "hard" sci-fi, but it attempts to be a lot more grounded in reality than stuff like Star Wars or Star Trek. Lots of very well-rendered space battles, and interesting characters with plenty of depth. Also unlike Star Wars or Star Trek: it's very serious. There are moments of levity, but for the most part the tone of the show tracks the seriousness of the events taking place.

My suggestion is to watch the first four episodes, and then decide if you want to continue. After four episodes I was all-in.

Thanks folks.

I would only add that there are some adult themes and language in spots.
Just be forewarned as a man of the cloth.
And as it moved to Amazon (seasons 4 and 5), the language use is more frequent.
