Estes has designed so many rockets over the decades, it's not surprising that they've had to use the same name for two different models.

I'm sure there are others.
Any come to mind?

There's been, what, 4 sizzlers at this point?
At least 3.

Two different Magician's that I know of.

I'd love to get a #1943 Magician and #1906 Sizzler again.

I think I still have a #1943 Magician in my parent’s attic. That was definitely one of my favorite rockets.

Don't forget the X-Ray. The black and pink version was the first rocket I ever built (but not my first flown, circa 1999). I have not had the fortune to get my hands on one of the classic ones.

How many versions of the Patriot are out there? at least 5, but I suspect there's more.
Citation Patriot (MK-3)
Patriot (0652)
Citation Patriot (0652)
Patriot (1825)
Patriot Missile M-104 (2056)
Pro Series Patriot Missile (2066)

There have been at least two uses of "Farside" - the one we all think of - three stages - and an RTF in a relatively recent launch set (Solar Scouts). There is a "Sprite" up on eBay right now that is NOT what I thought of when I saw the name. It looks more like a Gnome with the fin can on backwards.Screen Shot 2020-11-18 at 1.05.45 PM.pngScreen Shot 2020-11-18 at 1.13.02 PM.png

Hasn't the S.W.A.T. been released as the same rocket, different name?? Opposite of the thread, I know.........

Basic explanation is that they've got to keep names regularly in use for trademark purposes, or so I've been told (that is why you saw the Estes Centuri a few years ago!).

Interesting thread. I've not been deep enough in to rockets long enough to have seen this on my own.

While mulling this over, and after visiting JimZ's and YORP, this is what I came up with:

Semroc Swift KV-24/KV-27

Estes:
Eclipse 0846/DOM 1/78
Scorpion 1333/7232
Ranger K-6 (1206)/1955
Explorer 1974/7264
Twister 87162/3033
Cobra K-10/7228
Nimbus DOM#81/1971
Omega DOM#63/K-52 (1252)
Star Blazer K-31/TK-31
Vagabond 1423/3217
Marauder 1922/1110
Raven DOM#23/2029
Bandit K-48/1231/2060
Prowler 2156/9710

I imagine this is for search optimization. If someone wants an old Estes rocket (as we know they often do), and searches by name, I'm sure Estes wants to pop up first with a purchasable option.

Just speculation and, regardless of if it is their intention or not, I'm impressed by the strategy.

From a marketing viewpoint a glitzy face card and cool name would be more likely to add to sales revenue.
Of course, first of all the design must be appealing.
Why recycle names and add to the confusion when there are monikers that haven't been used?
Just need to be more creative.
I still haven't seen an Estes Scorcher, Fireball, or Hypersonic yet.

Google traffic is an essential component in online business. If people are searching for these old kits, I'm positive any experienced SEO would try and find a way to take advantage of that. Targeting the right things can add thousands of site visits a day, especially when you have the kind of domain authority that Estes does.
Plus, you can have nice packaging AND name the kit something that is already getting searches.

Again, speculation. It could just come down to ole' fashion laziness.

Also, if you already own trademark on a name that is out of production, why not reuse it and save lawyer fees?
IDK, maybe through the years the insiders have found that the name doesn't really matter as much as the design.
For example I liked the design of the newer Vagabond. But to me Vagabond means tramp.
I still bought it. Probably would have bought it if it was named Dog Barf. :D

I do think it just comes down to "it's hard to think up new names".
Boy do I know about that... I can't tell you how many times I get asked on FB if I'm Jim Parsons... Damn straight I am... What a stupid question.

named Dog Barf. :D
Or, Barfing Dog - That could be a Goony like the Sky Shriek, but more in the form of a dog, then the dog barf actually comes out at ejection like, well, dog barf!

Ha, that's hilarious!
Wasn't there a Grumpy Dog design way back when?
I'll have to search through my build piles.
I think I bagged the parts.
