he question is, especially for those of you that think we should eliminate the Electoral College,...would you be comfortable with that?

Yes, because the outcome would represent the majority of US voters. I do think that a true popular vote would have a moderating effect on the candidates. We wouldn't have the chess game each side plays with a handful of states during the campaign and each candidate would have to appeal to a larger group of people to be successful.

No.

Those of us here in the middle of the country, in rural area, came here to get away from the big cities and the big city mentality. Eliminate the electoral college and we would then be right back where we started, being governed by the ideas / mentalities of the big cities.

Serious question, what actually changed for you under Obama? Clinton? Not perceived changes... how was rural America harmed by a candidate favored by those in urban areas?

Do states not have their own governments? Do you really believe the president has that much power? Do the house and senate mean nothing?

The arguments for keeping the EC seem more like arguments to allow the GOP to have a chance.

I can't answer your question, that's political if I'm comparing left to right. Then the thread gets locked down.

I prefer to follow the founding fathers, not the latest fad.

I personally have always pitched dividing California into a minimum of two states (North and South) but an argument could be and has been made for California to secede from the Union.
Somebody floated an iniative a few years back to split CA into four states, strategically divided so that two would be "red" and two would be "blue". Ain't gonna happen... ever. Sacramento would be in one of the "blue" sub-states, and there's no way the CA legislature is going to let go of anything. Even when Jerry Brown was governor, he often found himself fighting on fiscal issues with the legislature... and Jerry was hardly a "red" governor, although he was a fiscal conservative who didn't shirk at cutting expenditures across the board when the big recession hit.

This entire thread has been political.

Does that mean you view the amendments to the Constitution as illegitimate?

The way I personally see it is that the president is supposed to represent every American, so it should be one American, one vote with the winner of the popular vote winning the presidency. Meanwhile, the senate is the check that gives additional weight to small states and helps provide a counterbalance to the majority via the power of veto. The house is more of a compromise, albeit one that favors the majority, which makes sense to me. I also think the president has recently gained a bit too much power due to efforts by both Republicans and Democrats to strengthen the position. I feel that a bit of the presidents power should be returned to congress.

I'm sick of having millions who don't happen to live in swing states feel like their vote doesn't really affect who becomes president. Also, imagine the nightmare scenario that we have a 270 to 268 election result and it gets flipped by two unfaithful electors who are supported by a friendly court.

Finally, I think we should have instant runoff ranked choice voting, as the founding fathers didn't desire a two party system and many modern Americans are tired of it as well. I think I speak for many of us who end up feeling like neither of the two candidates are "our man" (or woman, perhaps). You really can't separate all Americans into a neat two groups, and this new system would allow us to vote for the groups we truly believe in without knowing we are just spoiling things for the main candidate that is slightly closer to our ideology.

True. It has also been respectful and invigorating.

It's actually been a decent thread, I thank the Mods for putting up with it, I'm sure they have been on the edge of their seats.

I'm also glad I was able to share some of my experiences being a non-partisan chief judge at my precinct.

I highly recommend folks volunteer or take a part time position with the BOE at some point or another, it's very educational :)

I don't have the patience required. The firehouse I worked at had an community room attached to it which was a voting precinct in the township. It is always a struggle to keep people from blocking the ambulance and truck bays. 2012 was especially trying with the comments people gave when asked to move their car before getting in line or else get towed.

Since when was GOLD discovered in North Carolina?! ;-)
Being the autistic guy who takes that literally and goes off on a tangent is a dirty job but someone has to do it! 🤔 :D
The first documented discovery of gold in the United States was in 1799 at John Reed's farm in Cabarrus County, NC. John Reed’s son, Conrad, found a 17-pound gold nugget while fishing in Little Meadow Creek. This discovery started the first gold rush in the nation's history.
In 1825, Matthias Tobias Barringer found gold imbedded in a quartz vein on his property in Montgomery County (later Stanly County). Until that time, placer mining of surface areas for gold by panning or use of rockers had been the method for gold extraction in North Carolina. The Barringer Gold Mine signaled the beginning of lode mining in North Carolina, which led to a larger gold rush into the state. North Carolina led the nation in gold production until the California Gold Rush of 1849.
The majority of the gold deposits and the most productive gold mines in North Carolina were located in the gold-bearing "Carolina Belt." The "Carolina slate belt," located in the central Piedmont, includes Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Rowan, Davidson, Guilford, Stanly, Montgomery, Randolph, Moore, and Union Counties. Gold deposits also occurred in the Blue Ridge area of Burke and Transylvania Counties.

this has been an interesting thread, especially for someone who is totally outside your political structure (and borders!)

But I must admit I am amazed that you only seem to have 2 parties" red/blue; left/right; lib/con. There is no 3rd (or 4th or ..) choice. There never seem to be a new party rise up to shake up the system or give the people the choices they apparently ask for.. I'm sure if you had a 3rd, you may not be as polarized as you are..

Our system isn't perfect, but we do have a handful of parties, all vying for your vote, and each have a different platform / different priorities that can appeal to a variety of people. Like right now in our 'house of commons', we have 4 parties, one of which is a mainly Quebec party, bent on Quebec's separation! (And they were, a few years ago, the 'official opposition'!) Most of the time, 2 or 3 parties have to come together to get things done / passed..

Thanks again for your service. Also, this week tells us why the county election administrator's prayer is "Lord, let it be a landslide!" This stuff happens in every election, it's only when it's close that people really pay attention.

The NC gold rush was also the reason why the Cherokee were pushed off their land culminating in the Trail of Tears, which is how my mom's side of the family ended up in Oklahoma and Kansas.

Ah, but you must understand that the two major parties have a vested interest in keeping the system between them. When a third party appears and looks like a possibly viable opponent to the status quo, both major parties join in destroying the interloper. Wouldn't want to dilute the hold on power now. 😈

This country does need a viable 3rd party. In 2016 there was a legitimate choice in the Libertarian candidate, but the one thing the major parties agreed on was to suppress 3rd party candidates from the debates so no alternative positions were heard.

Jo Jorgensen underperformed compared to Gary Johnson, but she still made the ballot on all 50 states, and was still not invited to the debates. The only thing it seems the 2 parties agrees on is preventing competition. I was young, but was Ross Perot allowed to debate?

Ya mean like the Tea Party?

I do not like the US bipolar two party system. I would prefer a multi party system like the UK, not that they don't have their problems.

So I just read that 72% of registered voters in Ohio voted in this election. 72%. Seriously? If you are registered to vote why didn't you vote in THIS election of all elections? Do you love jury duty so much you can't take the chance of missing out?

If anyone isn’t voting to avoid jury duty, it’s kind of a silly. Most states draw from DMV data as well. Never registered to vote, but I’ve done jury duty. Not sure why one would want to avoid it, I learned a lot about how our legal system works and it felt good to help out.

I couldn't agree more.

I learned a lot from the trial that I sat on.

It seems in today's world many live in a bubble, folks need to experience the real world.
I gave up a week of my boring life, 25 years ago and remember that week clearly.
Had I been at work that week I'm pretty certain I would have no recollection of it.

My brother was sharing this guy's code on github that's supposed to comb through active state voter registrations/records and compare them for death notices
