Atlas B. Is the idea for now.

TA

I hope you enjoy the book!

OK, this is kind of embarrassing. My book doesn't cover the version of the Atlas B you want to build. To my knowledge, the drawing of the Atlas B Score flight is correct, but the Atlas B in your photo isn't covered in RotW. I hope these links help:

The nose in your photo is more like the blunt operational warhead. I have an Atlas D drawing that shows that warhead:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/48113599@N04/6608261031/

(the section between STA 426.5 and STA 454, meaning the length of the warhead above the corrugated section is 454"-426.5"= 27.5")

The shape in the linked image is a bit off--my conversion to GIF format kinda ooked up the profile--it's more of a blunt cone with a rounded apex than the curve that showed up in the image I'm linking to. Here's a clearer image that shows the true shape (maybe it's the site where you got your photo from, and you've seen it):

I also noticed that the Atlas B in your photo has the Atlas-A style pod/fairing thingies on the side of the missile (not the engine fairings at the tail, which are the later style as shown in RotW, but the long things above them that run along about a third to a half of the length of the missile). Here's a half-finished drawing of the Atlas A with that style of pod/fairing things:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/48113599@N04/6608259837/

(the thing between STA 802 and STA 1133)

Anyway, I hope these extra links get you to the model you want to build/

Peter Alway

Thanks, Peter,

Your sketch for the Atlas A is along the lines that I was talking to you a few weeks ago about the side pods (system tunnels?). Some photos I have seen also show the side pods this way.

Ya its not covered but I have enough information to get started. I was going to ask if any one knew if it was in one of the supplements.

ROTW is one of my favorite books ,which I bought as a BAR back in 2000 while shopping at a rocketry store in Toronto ,Canada. I`ve since bought all the supplements to go along with the book as well as Peter`s Kitbash book (another great resource for scratch builders)

I do indeed look forward to the Atlas build ,which should/will be a great project and one I hope you will post as a build.......PLEASE !

I will, I'm finishing 3 rockets before I start it, My TLP Nike Herk its been on the back burner for to long, then paint my Semroc Sat 1b, and then a scratch dual deploy that just needs a final coat of paint. Oh and decals on my Semroc mars lander. I still have some data to collect and as many close up pictures that I can find. I might go with a 4" dia air frame & three 29mm cluster or center 38mm. It depends on how heavy it will get If I can keep it under 2lbs Ill go for 29mm. Hummm Maybe 38mm no matter what I can always use a adapter.:cool2:

Great book! I see many hours spent studying those pages and daydreaming in your future. There are many occasions in which I have to really fight off the urge to bring my copy to the dinner table.

Got mine in the mail today.

Way less than the $235.00 ones on amazon as well. $37.95 total (includes shipping)!

Great book Peter! Already see a couple of mistakes in my Saturn 1B design.

Awesome Book!

The best reference on rockets there is, IMHO. I sometimes just grab it and thumb through. Always makes me feel good . Of course it also cost me lots of money, when I start a new project. Thanks to Mr. Alway for such a great work. Cheers,

Joe

Joe: you finally made your first post after joining 3 years ago?

RotW is the go-to reference for most rockets. It is highly desired but hard to come by since it hasn't been published in several years. Peter is working on a new version but it's on his time and he won't publish before he's ready.

Yea, been lurking for years, lost my user name and password on old computer.

That's great news. I got mine at a launch years ago, I think for
$ 25.00. I should have bought 10 of them. LoL.

Rockets of the World was one of my favorite books as a kid. My parents bought it for me when I was in elementary school, and I could spend hours reading it in the afternoon on the weekends. I really hope that a new edition comes out soon. There have been so many interesting rockets that have entered service in the last twenty years or so.

Edit: I just checked my copy, and apparently I got it for my sixth birthday. It's probably the book that I've owned for the longest in my life. Best birthday present ever.

I feel, in equal parts, honored and old. ;-)

I can think of so many cool books about rockets and astronomy that I pored over as a kid, and I'm really honored that my book became one of those for someone else. And I'm still chugging along on more material. Maybe this draft cover illustration will amuse you:

Such a tease!

My 4th edition doesn't have anything for Sea Killer or Marte. It looks like an Italian anti-ship missile. Peter doesn't include many military missiles and focuses more on non-military rockets.

Looks like that's going to change with his post above.
