Going to hot wire it first. Still gotta make that. I have one that would not span this NC.

Good plan. Are you going to use a template to guide the hot wire?

I really am impressed how fast you built the lathe. I’ve never done much woodworking and have little, knowledge, skill, or confidence in it. I’ve wanted to get started on it for most of this year, but can’t seem to get moving on it.

I would strongly suggest doing the work in the back yard. Bring along the vacuum cleaner w/hose to remove the dust from yourself. Don't use the beater bar on the vacuum, it hurts when you run it over the legs. 🤪

Seeing as how it is 10 degrees right now, I think the foam would shatter :)
The carpets are just for the dogs, but they do collect EVERYTHING.

Thanks, everything is wired and turning. Got a motor, NIB, off Craig's List for 10 bucks :)

I use a "Drywall Rasp" for general shaping . . . Like a "Cheese Grater", only a lot sharper !

I made the nose of this 12-foot long submarine for my church's VBS ( Vacation Bible School ), in 2016 . . . The Foam Nose is about the first 12" of the sub ( SORAC Method ) . . . The rest is Chicken Wire & Papier Mache.

The Drywall Rasp I used is a Stanley "Surform" . . . Pics below.

If anybody ever wants to build a huge submarine, this link will give you the pics to show you how I did it . . . ENJOY !

PVC pipe, 60 lb test braided steel leader, no coating on it. Went to Menards and got a door bell transformer, output is 16 volts at 30 amps. Also got a dimmer switch to control current. It has the push on/off feature so that it saves the last setting.
Got the first sanding done with 60 grit. I did not think it made to much dust. Just on the floor right in front of lathe.

Hot wire done.

Looks good.

I just remembered another tool I use for turning foam... I had a wood bandsaw blade break once, and rather than fix it, I cut it into ~12" segments, and fastened these together side by side with a bit of wire (electrical tape would work also), staggering the teeth. The result is basically a super aggressive rasp.
