What did you do rocket wise today?

Received my most recent Apogee order of rail buttons, conformal guides, and a Aeropack 24mm motor retainer. The lagniappe was another CD which I presume is the first 30 issues of Peak of Flight.

Painted some rockets and assorted parts that had already been primed: Estes Astron Sprint XL, Semroc Lil Ivan, nosecone, boat tail.

Epoxied the rod mounts to my LOC Blaster, fitted the Aeropack retainer, and fillet them this evening. If things progress quickly enough I will also add the rail buttons.

Still have one more rocket spike to finish tonight after this morning’s push to get them done.

Bought a small Milwaukee Packout compact tool box to store my supply of Estes and Aerojet BP D-E-F motors and I need to move them into it.. Expensive but the organization of the box is perfect for my needs. Pictures to follow when I get a new supply of “Danger! Black Powder Inside” from the local Liberty Safe dealer.

Last night I Got the carbon skins on the MDRM to fix a fin crack. Learned how to vacuum bag. An already built rocket is not a good first exhibit to do btw. Learned a few things. Pretty sure my first carbon purchase to see how it worked was garbage. Second carbon on the way is much better. It frayed a lot as I was working with the precut skins. Precut skins may not be the way to go.

in the end, ugly, but functional base layer repair. It’s getting repainted so it doesn’t matter if it’s ugly

It frayed a lot as I was working with the precut skins. Precut skins may not be the way to go.

Maybe precut slightly oversize? The edges could fray a little, but you're going to trim that part off anyway. Not that I know what I'm talking about.

I do think it was a case of not pulling
Up/out. Flat/flat surfaces thatI recall are mentioned as problematic in the handbook.

Adding a small amount of clay to the outside wingtip will prevent spiraling in, i.e. Left turn gets clay on the right wing tip.

Make small changes and test glide before adding black powder to the mix.

Painted my 220 Swift. I didn't have the right shade of yellow in spray, so I used a brush. Paint job came out kinda crappy but what the heck....I'll probably lose it before it's third flight anyway! (Though it looks okay from a few feet away). Also wrapped up work on the Custom Fiesta so it's ready for finishing. Began work on a Custom Aztec (also from my decade old stash of kits). Applied decals to the Tigres and put it on the shelf awaiting first flight.

I also noticed I have a Centuri Moonraker in my kit stash....undecided if I should open and build or keep it pristine. What say you all? (There's also an Estes Tornado in there....)

I will always vote for building it. Take lots of photos, document the build to reference years from now to get that kick of nostalgia again. Fly the rocket. Enjoy it.

Reviewing the documentation for the university team I mentor.

Yesterday I managed to check out some more functionality on the flight computer for my vertical trajectory system. Now I need to see if it will accept two radio receivers concurrently. That should work for mode switching. Might be able to get away with one if I am lucky. The compass still does not want to reliably connect. . I have ordered another compass (with integrated GPS ).

I lost my Mosquito but found the Swift twice about 30 feet from launch. It doesn’t tumble so it plants nose first into the grass. I’ve built clones where I connect the BT to the NC using Kevlar and epoxy. After several flights, the Kevlar burned apart and lost the NC but easily replaced. I can find it with a 1/4A3-3T but lose it with a A3-4T.

Are you more a builder/flyer or a collector or a trader. Or does it depend on the kit's value? I bet you could sell it and use the proceeds to buy two or three (or more?) current kits, but otherwise I'd build it; I really don't get collecting. To each his/her own, but I'd build it. And in addition what Wally wrote, also scan or photocopy the face card, instructions, and decal sheet.

I attached 5 fins to a rocket. Not a typical number, kind of fun. I applied the epoxy inserted the fin then removed and repeated the process. Afterwards, I looked inside and was quite happy with the fin to motor mount bond/fillet. I'm going to go ahead and apply internal fillets, but this makes me happy with a couple of my first mid power builds where is was the only thing I did attaching the fins.
