I used bridle joints for the the span under the top and lap joints at the bottom.
4” sq for the uprights
Extremely stable and very heavy lol

I have a laminate countertop as a bench also. If you can find a benchtop supplier they might sell you offcuts or seconds at a great price. I got about 8' of bullnose 1.5" for $50AUD. Of course there is only a limited range of colors in the seconds rack so you can't be too fussy.Once upon a time I made a workbench from a laminate countertop that had been damaged, so I got it quite cheaply. Pro: very flat surface that is easy to clean; integral backsplash keeps pencils and whatnot from rolling off that direction. Con: most laminates are built on a particleboard base, which doesn't bear up too well with moisture.
I have heard of a few people using Masonite as a benchtop. Just buy a new piece when the old one has reached its use-by date.i need to check out Masonite my old bench is now pretty nasty on top!
That is the nice thing about glass and Formica. Easy to keep clean and smooth.I use an 4'x8' glass table top. It's large enough for my largest of models. it's flat and level and all adhesives scrape off with a single edge razor blade. View attachment 429418
I like that idea.I got a work bench leg kit (which I cut the "feet" off of, and some double locking casters to build mine. Full 4x8 and I use a sheet of vinyl wall covering as a sacrificial top. I put drawers in too, but they suck and I wouldn't recommend these at least.

I have this very same bench. Surprisingly good value and materials. Mine had no defects and went together easily. I recommend these. Like Nate says, wait for a sale or coupon.I have one of these Oak Workbenches from Harbor Freight and I might add a second one. Wait for a sale and add a coupon if you can. The assembly instructions are trash and the bench had a few holes and slots that needed cleaning up in order for it to be square and level. That said, I paid less $100 for it orignally and spent an afternoon making it perfect. For the price, I ended up with a very nice bench in my garage. I'm not sure I could have bought the materials and drawn up plans that ended up any better for the same cost.

That is a lot of building space and storage underneath it. You have alot of room for glue ups while leaving some other parts to dry.I got a work bench leg kit (which I cut the "feet" off of, and some double locking casters to build mine.
