I have been wearing an N95 mask covered with a simple cloth mask or folded bandanna. In case I accidentally touch the mask I’m touching the cloth cover which can be washed. Keep outside air flowing in your driver area. Open the vents to the outside instead of recirculated. Look to see if there are small fans that you can place to pull in the outside air. The school bus that I remember riding the driver had a sliding window, keep that thing open or cracked. If there is a seat behind you keep it unoccupied.

If you can afford it take a sabbatical. Not worth the risk. We have teachers and professional football players sitting this one out.

I can barely breathe thru the N95 as it is.

Coming from past experience w/ the district, I believe we will eventually close, again.
The district closed March, Friday the 13th, because 1 custodian in 1 school had symptoms.
The week prior, had a 2nd grader onboard w/ excessive dry cough, fatigue and headache. Mom said he had no fever. Good to go.

Combine similar seasonal flu symptoms with CV19 symptoms coming this fall/winter, what do you have ?

I truly think it is going to be just a roll of the dice. Hopefully you don’t get snake eyes. I wear the N95 because of other people’s tendency to just pretend. Masks are required in my building, but there is always the guy who gets out of the elevator with his mask down. I went grocery shopping today and you have the clowns with the mask under the nose or around the neck because the are talking on the phone.

Good luck with your decision. Good luck to all of us!

N95 for nonmedical?

The CDC does not recommend that the general public wear N95 respirators to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for health care workers and other medical first responders. It is probably overkilling for the general population. I do nto wear one unless I am in contact with a patient and then I wear a face shield with it.

Also, an N95 can reduce oxygenation with exertion so I would definitely recommend caution with using one. It can be especially dangerous for people with oxygen demand issues such as heart disease. All FDA-cleared N95 respirators are labeled as "single-use," disposable devices and they are exactly that - single-use devices.

In public, I use cotton masks such as the Fruit of the Loop Masks that have a silver antimicrobial coating.

Why are you so skeptical of the treatment with Hydroxychloroquine, Azithromycin, and Zinc?

I am an evidence-based physician. All medications we take are inherently dangerous and harmful on one form or another. Tylenol can help with pain or fever, btu too much fried your liver, and if you take it regularly for pain (every 4-5 hours for a long period (months to years), it can increase pain as perceived. The same is true for all three of these items. In medicine, we are taught to "do no harm". I am very hesitant to suggest a medication without stronger evidence to suggest it works.

Secondly, one of the primary sources of this push in recent days is dubious at best. Anyone can make a youtube video and she has made claims that is the cure. She has also made claims about alien DNA. I would rather have firm evidence with 100s patients prior to recommend a treatment. The research is pending but the court is still out.

If you take it, there is potentially a huge risk if not properly studied.

Chuck, besides the obvious, what’s the difference between a nasal swab & a throat swab? Is one anymore accurate than the other?

What we are doing for most testing for COVID is a Nasopharyngeal swab. That is a nasal (nose) approach to reach the pharynx (throat). With COVID, it gives you a better sample than a simple oropharyngeal swab. The oral approach to the throat gives you less viral RNA and contaminates it with salvia. New testing, hopefully, will overcome this.

Update today: Three days of downtrend followed by a small spike today. Let's hope it is a single spike. School started in some counties. Thos little Petri dishes are gonna bring it home to Mom and Dad.

Update in GA: Schools have restarted in many counties and reports are common of both students and teachers being infected. Numerous stories on the local news and statewide board casts.

It’s a hodgepodge of a response here. Some are delaying in-class instruction until after Labor-Day, other districts are already opening. I want to keep our son home for the first 9 weeks, but that will probably require someone to quit a job. This is going to be a big test to see how much risk people can take.

What do you think the outcome will be with these infections? Will they try to keep the schools open or will the teachers force them to close with distance learning again?

So what's the procedure if a child or teacher gets infected? Quarantine the infected parties and contacts? Close the class? Do students keep going to school if some classes are closed?
I also see the same problem with NCAA sports. What if there's an infection mid season? Does the team cancel the game or the season? Only way to do league sports is by putting teams in a bubble like the NBA in Disney World. Cannot be done in collegiate sports. Don't think things can get back to "normal" without universal distribution of a vaccine.

Down here we are in a much harder lockdown due to spiking. All classes are now remote learning. During an earlier phase if a teacher or student tested positive the school was closed for three days and a deep clean done.

The children will recover and so will most teachers.

Will they try to keep the schools open or will the teachers force them to close with distance learning again? That is the question. I do not have the answer yet.

Emotion is making a lot of decisions for us. I have my recommendations but they have not asked me.

It was announced today that Mike DeWine, our Ohio governor, has tested positive for the Coronavirus. He is, at present, asymptomatic.

And the fear of asymptomatic spreaders is not helping.

Second test on Gov. DeWine came back negative.

A negative test is not necessarily negative. 98 % of the positive tests are positive. 70% of negatives are negative. I am not sure why anyone retested him. You not supposed to retest positives for 90 days.

It appears that the first, positive, test was the "rapid" test that the White House is requiring for everyone scheduled to meet with the president during his visit yesterday. That was followed by two PCR tests (by two facilities) that were both negative.

I have not seen that and now it makes more sense. Rapid tests are all rapid but not all are specific (accurate).

Our school district (will be re-opening in hybrid mode this fall) just published its policy for dealing with CV19 contingencies:
  • If a child is sick, parents are required to keep them at home, and inform the school. CV19 testing is encouraged, but left to the parents to arrange.
  • Teachers get tested, weekly, no cost to them.
  • If there is a confirmed positive in a class (all classes are split 50-50, with only half the group attending on a given day, then the other half the next day, etc), the entire group that was exposed gets quarantined for 14 days, including the teacher.
    • Classes continue with a substitute. Quarantined group attends exclusively online for the duration of the period.
      • There was a footnote, informing parents that there is a state-wide shortage of substitute teachers. We'll see what happens if a sub can't be secured, and the primary teacher is down with CV19 for a length of time.
Sorry for a slight soliloquy, but since we are sharing all sorts off-the-wall cures for CV19, at least this dude has a fun one.
And, for a change, it includes rockets (and some paint)!

Update: The one of two major counties surounding me have reopened. There are 5 new clusters of COVID were found thanks to screening and testing. One week, 5 new clusters is not a bad number. Hopefully, it remains low.

For my county of 628,000, Ive seen a rise in POS cases at about 200 every 3-4 days. My understanding that testing is more prevalent and accessible than it was in April/May. Long term care resident deaths have been flat for about 1-1/2 months.

Im assuming healthcare workers, politicians, fire, police, EMT, major league players, etc are getting tested on a regular basis.

Are POS case counts for states, counties including these people getting tested on a regular basis ?

I am a flight medic in the US and have not been tested, nor have I had any reason to be tested. We screen ourselves daily as part of our shift briefing and wear N95 or P100 masks with gloves, goggles or a face shield during every patient contact. When working on the truck, we can wear a PAPR and change into scrubs as well.

Yes, positivity rates include the people getting routinely tested by commercial/state labs, but I can't speak for specialty testing such as (just an example, no politics please) white House staff that are routinely tested. These might be on a closed/non-reported system. In any case, routinely tested people are a tiny percentage of overall tests.

Yes. It includes a bunch of tests on people that have no business being tested.

Until recently, we had about 10% of our tests being done by the order of local officials. Physicians pushed back and were ordered to run the tests. The lawyers pushed back and said the officials have no right or authority to order the use of clinical tests. We are in unprecedented times.

Many folks are being tested multiple times. They keep coming through answering the right questions. I think some folks are using the testing for free vacations.
