What did you do rocket wise today?

Epoxied the ”snuffer” shock cord mount into the body tube of my LaserLOC 2.23. Best laid plans and but it’s in and only about an inch forward of the intended location...no big, now I have additional room for motors and still plenty of room for recovery gear in the front. All I need to do now is put in J-B Weld fillets front and back on the mount and that little chore is done.

Assembled the motor mount adapter of the LaserLOC 1.613 and need only mount a motor retainer to the business end and ”case harden” the assembly with CA glue.

Fitted the fins to the little LaserLOC and discovered my Badass BT60 build guide is for 1/16” fins so I ordered one for 1/8” fins. If you can’t print guides for yourself, Badass guides are pretty slick and Ian ships quickly.

My 6’ 20mmx20mm 8020 launch rail showed up today, well packaged and straight. Tomorrow I’ll bust out the Rail-buttons.com mini’s I ordered last week and give them a test run.

What didn’t show up was the 12” long 19/32” brass tubing to mount/epoxy my 10mmx10mm MakerBeam micro-button launch rail into. Should have looked at the Amazon vendor reviews...only 80% satisfactory. Package was sent via DHL Global (?!), mis-routed, to Compton, CA, routed to SF Bay Area, and who knows when it will arrive. Amazon has already notified me of the delays and advise to request refund if package doesn’t arrive by close of business tomorrow. I can buy the damn thing locally for about half of what I paid for it 3-1/2 weeks ago during the lockdown.

I got mine from McMaster-Carr. Maybe not the cheapest but came in a heavy cardboard tube.

It's amazing how many things McMaster-Carr carries. Good prices on both items & shipping and fast delivery times. When I started building telescopes 25 years ago I'd order a number of things from McMaster-Carr as I couldn't find them locally.

I've been thinking about buying a Jaw Stand and was surprised they don't have them.
At my last job I used to get a lot of things from McMaster, or another company we used was MSC Industrial Supply. Sometimes they will have something that McMaster doesn't, or vice versa.

My 1x1 rail came from Zoro via Walmart Online. It’s substantially heavier in weight than the 8020 20x20mm rail I ordered through Amazon. Bottom line prices with shipping were almost identical.

Clear coat on MDRM. It is not as smooth as I would like. I believe this is because of my failed spray booth and hope when I build a legit booth at my new house when I move to Ohio that it will solve this issue. Still looks good and it’s not exactly high performance so I’m not going to worry about it too much.

Ordered this weekends motors with the apcp enabler. Level one attempt here we come.

Took delivery of my LaserLOC 1.614 today and started assembling the motor mount. In this case it’s actually a 38 to 29mm adapter. Don’t know why but that’s always the first thing I start on.

All the parts are present and there was no damage in shipping.

I”m debating whether to make it dual deploy (I have an SMT BT60 av bay) or to build it single deploy with a baffle between the two motor tube sections. Either way it will need a nose cone bay for the GPS if it’s going to “go fast” or “go high”.

The advantage of the dual deploy setup is that I can fly it using only the booster and a small motor for MPR launches.

Thinking about a Rocketman 15’x6” streamer for visibility as well as recovery. Has anyone used one?

I got my L1 with the LOC 4" Goblin, and seriously considered one of the Rocketman Extreme streamers for the recovery, because, well, it's a Goblin! One of the kits I bought in my first childhood , specifically because it had a long streamer for recovery. Alas, I let my fear of failure force me to remain conservative with a parachute. Now you got me where I feel a need to double check the rocket's weight, and get that streamer the Goblin deserves.

I tried a new (to me) paint technique: rattle can gradient fade:




It came out okay, but I really should get (and learn to use) an airbrush to really make something like this work.

I knew the masking tape at the top would give me a sharp line. I thought tearing the edge of that tape would give an interesting shape to the line. Not so much. I’ll go back with the yellow again in a couple of days and try to smooth out that color transition.

I rushed the tape job for the fin stripes, and it shows. Even after hitting it with a coat of the yellow to seal the edges, I still got more bleed through than I wanted.

So, mildly successful first attempt with this technique. I learned (and re-learned) a couple of things.

Keep working on that, Robert, and be on the lookout for an Estes/Hobby Lobby “Vapor”. One of the two suggested finishing scheme is very similar to what you’ve done.

My rocketry endeavors today largely centered on the LaserLOC 2.23 and I used a couple of long sticks and dowels to to create a fillet around the “fire” side of the “snuffer” shock cord mount with J-B Weld. Turned out pretty well. Tomorrow I will do the same thing to the other side of the shock cord mount but instead of J-B Weld I’ll just use epoxy.

I did fit the LaserLOC 1.6 nose cone to the body tube and considered using the baffle tube for an av bay. I’m probably going to skip that as it adds weight will little advantage. My recovery plans at this point are leaning toward the Rocketman 15’ streamer.

That's a pretty cool rocket. I found one for sale at JonRocket. It's a three motor cluster, correct? Maybe my first cut at a cluster build. My club has an annual "Carl McLawhorn Memorial Flyoff" for Semroc kits. This year in October. This might be a good entry.

I do. Most of them many times, but ones like the Delta II and the Falcon Heavy, only a few times. There are 2 in this collection that are new and will be flown for the first time over the next few weeks. The V2 (I lost my last one puting an E12-4 in it) and the Falcon 9 Crew.

Is this the 24mm version or 18mm? I have the 18mm and was thinking about a motor retainer, but it is larger then the body frame so i am concerned about drag. Could you update with how it flies? Currently I'm using the masking tape and jam it in place method. I'm going with a metallic pewter paint. This looks nice!

I'm not looking to break any speed or altitude records, so I'm not terribly concerned about the extra drag. It's the 18mm, and I have not flown it yet.
