This got into my head yesterday so I drew it up and cut the parts this morning. I need to cut the centering rings and decide on a NC design. This is for a 29mm motor case.IMG_20200309_150648728.jpg
 
Cool! That reminds me of the classic Centuri Satellite Killer, it has no nose cone. The dish is a REMOVE-BEFORE-FLIGHT thing.

I saw one in a video of a club launch yesterday and that inspired this. I went to sleep designing this, got up this morning and started cutting parts. I saw how the SK does the top but I would like to pop the top for a chute recovery. I guess when I say NC I am suing the term very loosely. I mentioned to Neil I may turn a cap that is actually concave like the front deflector on the Enterprise. I have considered using a small copper plumbing cap inside to absorb the heat from the ejection charge.

I could do a rear eject but I am not experienced doing that and the light bulb has not come on as to how to set it up.

This is just a dry fit and I am pretty open to ideas.
 
This will be much more durable than the fiber fins and pads of the Satellite Killer.
And the draggy design will mean you can load it up with a big motor without fear of losing it.
Lots of noise, smoke, and fire, and oohs and aahs from the crowd.
Use a short delay or the chute may not have sufficient altitude to open.;)

An off the shelf kit that's also a hoot to fly on G motors is the Rocketarium Turbo Vortico.
At the risk of being repetitious, here's a launch shot:

And of the same genre is the LOC Cool Spool. 29 mm motor mount.
Launch it on a Black Jack, lots of smoke, noise and fire.
Wish I had a launch pic.

Turbo Vortico is great fun, I saw KenECoyote fly one on an F15 and it was great. Really builds up a fast spin, and that helps it come down more slowly. Would be spectacular on something like an F10 with really long burn.

was just thinking about what Neil and Gary have posted and I wonder if I will even need a chute if I cant the deflectors so she spins.

Oh where's Babar I need to name this thing.

I canted the panels "10deg" but that is on an angle and I did not want to do the trig to figure out what it really is so let's just call it 10deg....:rolleyes:o_O
 
Are the, uh, "drag pads" canted to make it spin? Just curious.
I would advice in this case AGAINST making it spin. Put the Drag Pads on flat, specifically no canted angle.

Rationale:
If the allow this to spin, it may spin very fast (maybe not, the radial fins may prevent it from going TOO fast).
This means it will impact Terra all too often Too-Firma with potentially considerable angular momentum.

And since you have no airfoils on this, spin gets you little if anything in terms of lift.

Not sure if you are gonna use a chute or not, it is gonna be a pretty tight fit but if you can get one it I would recommend it for this size. Even a small chute will help, as the model itself has significant drag, but as

Anyhooo, even it lands motor mount first it is going to tip over until one of the drag pads hits the ground. If it is ROTATING at significant angular velocity, that will be significant kinetic energy that has to be dissipated suddenly to the ground, high probability of breaking off a fin.

I have experience with this as it is a problem with Helicopter rockets.

Names? I dunno. GeoSat is overused. Centrino? Soliton Sailor. Phoenix Rising? Tachyon Deflector?

It's a nice, clean design, should be a nice small field rocket. If you fly it as a pure saucer with no chute, you'll need a motor that you can remove the delay charge, I think. Otherwise highly likely delay will go off after this puppy has already landed. That tends to be frowned upon.

Thanks my Friend, The fins are a done deal and they are canted. I will shoot some pics later of a dry fit. I notched out the main fins and cut slots in the deflectors and then used epoxy to lock it all down.

You have an excellent point about the spin doing damage on landing. a chute it is. I cannot do rear ejection because of the fin system unless I do some very intricate cutting and still there is a risk of the centering rings getting stuck against one of the fin tabs. I also have zero experience with rear ejection. I have the top centering ring far enough back that I will have room for a chute even with a short shouldered NC.
 
I don't think that's a real concern. If my Quinstars are any indication, these sorts of things don't tend to spin very fast, and by the time they land they're barely spinning at all. I'd also expect it to be much more robust than the typical helicopter rocket.

It is pretty stout !! I can easily fit a small chute though so I might as well go that route. For the NC I think I will make a tube that fits over the MMT. The NC can then have pretty much no shoulder at all, 1/4" should be enough to keep in lined up. This should protect the chute and shock cord while freeing up room in the nose area.
 
Whenever I remember a thread I can never find it. I vaguely remember an upscale satellite killer that had some spin issues with the chute on the way down, it got tangled in one of the panels, or it ejected the cute on the way down out the top and into its own path, rather than a rear-eject which would have worked better, I don't recall and I can't find the link I wanted to share. It might have been on another forum.
