Hmm. Didn’t think about getting a hotel room. 2 hours drive should be doable, but what are the hotel recommendations?

We don't usually have a special block of rooms reserved for us but...There are A LOT of places to stay in the area. I'll make some recommendations but remember I'm local to the area so I've never stayed in any of these:

- Four Winds Casino. About a 10 minute drive from the field
- Blue Chip Casino - Michigan City. About a 20 minute drive
- There are several motels right off of I-94 exit 1 - roughly 15 minute drive to the field
- If you don't mind driving a little further Saint Joseph/Stevensville area has some newer motels as does the Benton Harbor area right off of I-94. Do NOT stay in the Red Roof Inn or Motel 6 in Benton Harbor unless you enjoy collecting bed bugs.
- South Bend / Niles / Mishawaka also have a lot of places to pick from as well and are not horribly far from the field either.

What I would strongly recommend is VBRO or AirBnB. There are literally hundreds of these kind of places in the surrounding towns such as, New Troy, New Buffalo, Sawyer, Galien, Union Pier, etc. They're kind of expensive in our area since we get a lot of Chicago Tourists but many of these can be shared with multiple people thus splitting fees. Also, the further away from Lake Michigan you get the lower the fees per person it appears.

And I know someone is going to ask...But here are some great places to eat nearby:

- Journeyman Distillery in down town Three Oaks
- Wheatberry just north of Buchannan
- Buffalo Bills in New Buffalo on US12
- Redamax in New Buffalo - a lot of people LOVE this place. I think its really over rated. YMMV

Hope that helps!

This is the launch that used to be "Midwest Blast", correct? I'll have to see what my calendar looks like.

Spectating only, I don't want to fetch from trees... :)

One in the same. Not entirely sure what brought about the name change (not that it matters much) but its going to be the same happy folks with the same equipment at the same field.

I might be able to go to this one, but I won't know until next week. I am supposed to change work rotations which would give me this weekend off, but I don't have a confirmed change date yet. Hopefully I know before the price goes up and I might be ready for a L1 cert flight on my punisher.

If the wind is from the west or south, then trees are not an issue. There is probably 2 miles of recovery area in these directions. I have flown to ~14k ft without concern at this field.

Who typically vends at this event or your launches? I would like to make arrangements to be sure I will have a reload for my Punisher.

I went ahead and registered today before the deadline ends. Even if this event gets rescheduled like most others, I plan on going.

Lockdown has been way busier than I thought it would be - I guess it's lucky for me that I can work remotely. Not sure if we're going to get to fly again this spring but I finally finished the LOC Sandhawk 3.1" that I was planning on flying at Three Oaks.LOC_Sandhawk.jpg

Hello Michiana Rocketry members, family and friends,

Hope everyone is doing well.

Over the past few weeks and days the BOD and myself have been discussing what the best course of action for having Michiana Rocketry Mayhem either the first or second week of May.

Unfortunately the State of Michigan has extended their stay at home order which also bars large group gatherings until at least May 15th. The May 15th date would put the launch outside the planting schedule of the farmer. Once the field is planted we will not have access for a launch.

Its with my deepest regrets, that I have to announce that we will be postponing Michiana Rocketry Mayhem 2020 until our fall / winter season opens after the summer crops have been harvested.

Once the field is open for us in October or November we will proceed with all the activities that we had planned for Michiana Rocketry Mayhem 2020.

In addition registered flyers will receive...

  1. Michiana Rocketry Members that have registered - Extended current club membership for 4 months from current renewal date.
  2. Non-Michiana Rocketry Members that have registered - Extend a 4 month trial club membership active from October/November - January/February depending on when we start up in the fall.
  3. Award each of the registered flyers 2 raffle tickets for the banquet. $10.00 value. Remember, lots of really great prizes will be available.
  4. We will be adding a third day to the launch, have the field open Friday thru Sunday.

I just want to let each and everyone of you know that I have done all I can and have worked really hard to try and make this launch happen! Unfortunately some of this is out side of my control. Please know each and every member of Michiana Rocketry is the reason our club is amazing and I appreciate everyone! We could not be the wonderful club we are today with out you!

Again, I am truly sorry that we were not able to have the launch that we planned for this coming weekend. I do promise that when we do have Mayhem in the fall it is going to be even more AMAZING!

If there are any changes you guys will be the first to know!!

As always if anyone has any questions please feel free to reach out.

Until next time, be safe and stay healthy!

Jerry Vida
President Michiana Rocketry

Thanks for the update Jerry. Things are still not good in many places. Will look for the launch in the fall. Everyone take care of yourselves. Greg Olson

Sad news, I was really looking forward to the Mid West Blast successor next month. I've always had a great time there in previous years, most notably a successful L2 flight. The silver lining is, the postponement may enable my L3 flight there, which itself is on hold pending a Loki hardware delay.

Thanks nonetheless for the great effort to make this excellent event happen, Mr. Vida and club. See you hopefully in the fall!

Good skies,
GlueckAuf

Hello Michiana Rocketry members, family and friends,

I would like to start off by saying that I hope everyone and their families have been safe and healthy during this truly crazy and unprecedented time.

With the start of the next flying season quickly approaching I wanted to give an update on what the BOD and myself have been working on in the off season.

  1. We are full steam ahead with our 3 day launch MICHIANA ROCKETRY MAYHEM! As we get a bit closer I will have the dates worked out with the farmer for our entire launch season. Mayhem will be our first launch of the upcoming season and we plan on making it one to remember. Here is the event page to see what we have going on for the event. MICHIANA ROCKETRY MAYHEM The registration window for pre-registration will be open until October 31st, please register before then to guarantee a T-Shirt and a spot at our Banquet.
  2. I am proud to announce that I have been working with our great friends Jason and Dave over at LOC Precision. Jason and Dave have manufactured a CUSTOM kit for MICHIANA ROCKETRY MAYHEM 2020. The custom kit's name is "Mayhem 2020" and is a 4" 38mm with a custom split fin design, this rocket was designed around a I280 Dark Matter but will fly on any motor between a big H to a full J and will be an absolute crowd pleaser. We will have a very limited # of the "Mayhem 2020" kits and will retail them for $100 plus shipping. Once this kit is sold out, there will be no more. For more details on how to get one, just send me an email. Also take a look at LOC's website for all your other rocketry needs!! https://locprecision.com/. As a fun thing to do on Saturday of our Mayhem 2020 launch I will be organizing a drag race with the Mayhem 2020 rocket kit. The winner of the drag race will not only have bragging rights but will receive $50 in tickets for the INCREDIBLE PRIZE RAFFLE that we will be having at our Saturday banquet. Check out the Mayhem 2020 event page for a complete prize list and photos!!! Here is a rendering of the Mayhem 2020 Kit!!

  3. We have our BOD elections coming up. This year up for election is a) President, b) Treasurer and c) Member at Large. For anyone that wants to be a part of helping to make this club even more amazing then it is now, for anyone that wants to help shape the future of our wonderful club and to help bring value to its members please submit your nomination, a brief rocket resume and a photo. I will open up the nomination period Sep 1st 2020 and keep it open until Sep 21st 2020. On October 1st 2020, I will send out an electronic voting survey with all candidates for each BOD position accompanied with the rocket resume and photo of each candidate. Voting will be open from Oct 1st 2020 to October 15th 2020. Results will be announced on October 18th 2020. BOD members will be officially sworn in at our Michiana Rocketry Mayhem Banquet.
  4. Over the years I have been extremely fortunate to have several amazing people help me along my rocketry journey. I am truly grateful for each and everyone of them, with that said, I want to do what I can to help any up and coming members with their certification journey as I was helped. I would like to create a "Certification Mentor-ship Committee". This committee would be made up of a handful of members that are high power certified with TRA or NAR that would like to make themselves available to mentor and work through the certification process for flyers that are interested in becoming high power certified. Being this is a committee, it will be an appointed position on the BOD. I truly think that by helping new members along their certification journey like each and everyone of us were, that we will do our part in keeping the wonderful hobby alive with the next generation. For more info on how to apply to be a Certification Mentor just send me an email and we can discuss.
So for now, that's about it. I did add a "Featured Flight Area" to the Michiana Rocketry Mayhem 2020 event page, check it out. If you would like to submit a featured flight, send a pick, the motor and the estimated altitude! Looking forward to seeing a bunch of cool stuff!

I am really looking forward to the up and coming season! When I have the exact schedule setup I will have the site updated and send out an email.

As always if anyone has any questions, please feel free to reach out and I will do my best to answer them!

Be safe, stay healthy and look forward to seeing you on the field!!!

Best regards,

Jerry Vida
