After being on this forum for over 10 years I have seen some significant changes in the attitudes of the people that are on here. It seems that if you disagree with someone and state your opinion or by chance you don’t go with majority of people who are in favor of something most everyone gets their panties in a twist and then it turns into a big confrontation, which it should have never been escalated to that point to begin with. I just remember coming on here and the people were always very much into the hobby and it was a cool place to hang out and catch up on some great topics and build threads. I don’t see that anymore. If I come on here and participate in a thread and disagree with someone it turns into something it never should have. Instead of being place to express your opinion and enjoy the company of others.

I do want to thank all the moderators and admins who do an exceptional job keeping the site running smooth and monitoring the threads etc. Thanks again your hard work and dedication certainly is appreciated. I’ll continue to be a paying member and support this site, because I believe it can be a great place again.

This happens every winter. We're all cranky and deprived of good weather and big launch events. Once we all start flying again, things will settle down until next winter.

Yep, between David Bowie's death and the Rio Olympics, people were never really the same

Even without the major political events it is not hard to look at the rise of meme culture, hypercynicism, tech giants profiting from misinformation and conclude that was when the internet was replaced by a giant bag of dicks. give or take a year or two.

Here on the left coast in NorCal we’re approaching the tail end of our rocket launch season.

In a good year, we launch from October through April in while the grass is green. SoCal mostly launches from dry lake beds so their launch season is almost year round...summer heat not withstanding and the occasional rain/mud during the so-called winter.

I’ve never launched in snow but have seen enough video to know that some of you do.

ROTFLMAO !!!! I have this conversation with my kids all the time, they are college age.

I agree with that sentiment in general, and I would be most happy if the big social media sites would collectively die in a fire (especially Facebook). But it's also
worthwhile to remember that Back In The Old Days™ before modern social media there was Usenet, and to put it kindly it was not for the faint-hearted. That's where flaming was, if not invented (debatable), then at least elevated to a perverse art form. Even at its worst, TRF is like a meditation class compared to that.

It's nice to see you two bonding...

Sorry.

This is getting tacky. Let's keep it moving so it doesn't get stuck where we don't want it too. :)

I've seen a few threads where poster's passion has overcome their internal filters but the mods have stepped in.

Most folks are very welcoming. Don't let the few ruin the forums for you.

<g> When has the internet ever been anything else?

I remember when AOL opened its Internet Gateway. Before that, about 30% of the content on every usenet forum was an argument about netiquette that started out as an argument about something else. The other 70% of the content was users fretting that they didn't want the thread to degenerate into a flame war -- punctuated by reminiscences about how much better the SNR was back in the ARPAnet days. After the AOL newbies showed up, 90% of the content was explaining jargon and telling users NOT TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS -- then it all turned back into noise about how noisy usenet had become. If anything has changed, its that everybody is now an annoying noob who didn't have to learn any VMS or UNIX commands to get into the party (and the word "netiquette" now sounds quaint).

But I will accept @afterburner's assessment that there has been a change in tone on this forum in the
over 10 years

Back on subject, I don't recall anyone getting banned since I joined, as opposed to the apparent banning of a few members who migrated to YORF way back when. So does that mean it's less contentious or more lenient? IDK.
I've seen that when someone acts like an a** they get slapped down by the community forthright. As it should be.

I don't know how it used to be but I find this forum very informative and civil. For the most part everyone seems very friendly and very willing to help whomever has a need or question.
I have learned a large amount of knowledge and learn something new everytime I get on.
Thanks to everyone on here for all the help I for one have received.

Maybe something about "infraction points go on your permanent record. 12 points will result in a ban" can have a mollifying effect on folks. (at least after 5-6 have been accumulated)

I agree with the OP, but I also admit I have a tendency to be optimistic about the past.

I suspect that some of the evident good behavior is due to pruning by the mods. I had a post disappeared, and received a warning, when I quoted a line from a movie (without sufficiently clear attribution) that some other forum user reported as threatening speech. That is comparatively aggressive moderation and it was invisible to anyone but me, the mods, and the user who -- apparently -- isn't a Peter McNicol fan.

For the record, ThirstyBarbarian and I were both banned for giving each other “the business” and we’re members of the same rocket clubs and fly together all the time.

In hindsight, I guess we were probably just given timeouts.

Twitter on the other hand...I am officially a #RoadieForTheBanned. Musta been all that stuff I learned on USENET back in the day.
