My favorite drummer since 1978 is Roger Taylor. His work is best exemplified in Queen's first two albums. Nevertheless, Peart was a titanic percussionist. This caught me off guard.
 
Very sad. I knew his sentiments...but I prayed for him none the less. I hope he is at peace. What a talented percussionist. I hope he is with his wife a daughter.

I feel like I've lost a friend today. Never met him, but he's given me so much enjoyment through the music. The band was already over but it still hurts knowing that there's absolutely no more Rush music coming. He's a legend. There will never be another like him.

The entire ride home tonight I was enjoying drum solos at high volume. On the back of my Jeep is the same image of my avatar and I wondered if anyone behind me had heard the news.

So sad tonight.
 
Wow....Shocked!!!

Though I was late getting on the Rush Bandwagon (1979ish), and early jumping off (1994ish)...when I got on, I soaked up every minute...
This man and his band influenced and inspired my drumming core.....influenced my thinking to play precise and chase the technical edge that no one else has cut! You helped influence my drum kit (and I didn't even know it...I didn't have video or internet).

He helped make the drummer I used to be, still inspires the drummer that I am today and continues to be in the heart of the drummer that I wish I was...

Thank you Professor, your teachings will always live on!

I grew up listening to Rush and going to their concerts, they were local to me. Most of my friends were musicians, with me being a wannabe musician, but, I ended up being more of the tech guru rodey. One friend was so amazing at playing drums, he could play any Rush song perfectly. He was amazing to watch. Sad loss.
 
Floored by this... was having a Friday evening meal at one of our favorite watering holes last night when the 2112 LP Side1 track was played end-to-end. Ecstatic to hear this after many years I decided to Google up the band on my phone to discover Neil's passing. You were a drumming Titan, and the rock world mourns your passing.

I hadn't heard the news, and popped in "Permanent Waves" into my CD player for the commute home from work on Friday. And was then surprised and sad to see this.

I did google Rush like you said. Neil Peart joined the band the same year the Workin' Man was released (1974) He might have joined in the back half of the year, and the Workin' Man might have come out in the first of the year. Either way, It's close enough for me. He surely performed the song 100's of times live with the band over the years. He helped put the "MAN" in the song Workin' Man.

When I hear something I like, I don't care who (person) wrote it and when it was written. Only the band that sings or performs it live. Not once in all the years I've been listening to that song did I ever want to google it and analyse everything about it. Not until you come along. You sure know how to suck the fun right out of the word fun, don't you.
 
Easy HyperSonic, it’s all good. I’m sure Neal could play Working Man blindfolded with one hand tied behind his back. But Rutsey played on the record and played it live a bunch of times before Neal took over his seat. Mr. Peart certainly has his own legacy of outstanding work. Some of us just found it amusing that you called out one that wasn’t his.
 
Fly By Night was the first tape I ever bought. Such a great album. Exit Stage Left got played over and over and over again.

Ok I've stopped with the frying pan :)

Oddly enough though, my little brother was a BIG Rush fan, he went to the 2112 and Hemispheres concerts.
I wanted nothing to do with THEM!!! (Rush)
But that album was the first album that I used to play along with on drums...no Neil Peart, and I still didn't want anything to do with any "newer" Rush.

Anyways, I was in the Columbia Record Club and ordered Fly by Night, Caress Of Steel, 2112, A Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres....
I remember the moment....I put on AFTK first and the first track....I was waiting...listening....and then the drums came in..
OMG.......and then..
Xanadu...........
Then Hemispheres album....
I had a listening fest, a drum fest and an enlightening to a whole new way of thinking about drums.

An AMAZING drum ride for so many years!!!!

My very first vinyl LP purchase (via Columbia Records mail order) was......

I was in 8th grade at the time.
 
Sirius is doing all Rush music on the Deep Tracks channel, which I believe is 27. I had a 2 hour trip today and enjoyed some nice deep track which made the time fly by...
