When I look at this rocket I wait for the .gif to start because it really looks like the sections with 6 fins should spin :)

Now I'm thinking what one could do with a stationary central core, a few wheel bearings out some rollerblades, and slightly canted fins in the 6-fin section(s).

For all the effort, I don't know how well you'd actually see it in flight. Would look cool on display though.
 
Make the section between the smaller fins clear plastic tubing.
Stationary central core is the stuffer tube.
Maybe some led lights.
You could have your translucent decal or wrap on the clear tubing and backlit by the leds.
Swirling plasma?
Oh wait, that's another rocket.
Maybe too "busy"?
 
This is definitely a plasma-core-like construct (although this one came first. :)) A lit core would definitely be cool for a night launch, or for display.

This design needs some work, though; there's something not quite right about it. I like the wing shape, and the general idea of the warp core, but that's about it.

If it's gonna be a real sci-fi model (and it seems like it is) then the front core and canards (or whatever you want to call them) don't really make much sense.

I really like #1 as well! The grey may be an improvement, but I don't think that the rocket will be ugly in all white :).

This design needs some work, though; there's something not quite right about it.

You have a more discerning eye than me. Any idea what it is you don't like? Proportions, colors, cosmetics?

I actually love the grey, but it adds difficulty to the decaling that I'm not really interested in dealing with.

Mainly what I said above. It's possible that with a good paint job it would be nice.

Right now I really need to do a clean-sheet new design or two.

Who was it did that "spin can" build thread a while ago? He worked out all the details, so one could use that design for this mid section.

And as for:

when has not making sense ever stopped the designers so sci-fi vehicles? OK, lots of time actually, but there are plenty of others that were not stopped.

Unless Neil bites the bullet of high power, Jim's solution is far too heavy for any of these builds

I usually don't particularly care, but in this case the contradictions really bug me. Just my own reaction when I look at it.

If you want a good sci-fi reason for those six canards you could forgo any plasma pattern under them and instead call then cooling veins for life support systems. On board systems of all sorts generate a lot of heat, and keeping the crew or passengers comfortable requires a way of radiating that heat out into space.

I remember a helicopter rocket, I think QCR, with a body tube around a slightly smaller body tube, lubricated with graphite, that allowed the rotors to spin with little rotation of the main tube and fins....
 
Still in business. I think the owner was trying to sell a couple of years ago since he was working in the New York area and the store was in another state, IIRC.
Bought a couple of old HH kits a few months ago. Came with a sim program on cd that runs on Windows 7!:eek:
The 24mm version of Ultimate II copter rocket was still available a few days ago, but the shipping put me off.

Interesting. At the time, he was trying to sell because he was moving to Florida (I think) and didn't want to take the business with him. If he's still actually in business then it makes me wonder where he ended up. 'Cuz if he's still in NJ area I wish he'd come to our launches like he used to. :)

Hmmm......

Upscale to 4" Canvas Phenolic, use Delrin/POM/Acetel bearings and a high torque DC motor....

Maybe next year....
 
I think QCRs Ultimate II helicopter had a spinning hub, I think it was a tube over a tube, lubricated with graphite.

It didn’t work very well, but part of that is likely that there was so little resistance from the main body spinning that it didn’t matter.

So may be do-able relatively simply. However, the spin would not likely be OBSERVABLE, so not sure the effort would be worth it.
 
I’d cant the inside vanes one way and foil/tab the outer fins the other way.

Still might not be visible. It needs a paint job that makes different a illusion if spun widdershins or deiseil.
 
I can imagine that with some smooth molded plastic (Delrin would be nice, or ABS or whatever...) you could manufacture a little pod that would spin nicely. Hand-fabricating one would be harder.

Still not worth it for something small like that I don't think.
