OUCH!!! I use an old school 8" Celestron, I'm paranoid as anything about where it's pointed when I take the lens cap off. I try to make sure it's pointed about 180 degrees away while I put the solar filter on. Things could get real hot, real quick. I'm really sorry to hear about your mishap. I've been real close to making that mistake a few times myself. As it was, I missed the transit of Mercury due to overcast and snowy conditions.
