Theory is right on this and it is time to close the thread.

The turning point was when Pat G had his heart attack. He and I a year ago made a plan where I would produce the rocket and he would produce the motor.

It worked well until this summer when Pat got nailed with the heart problem. It changed everything including the dynamics of this project. There were others who wanted to build the motor but quite frankly they didn't have the leadership skills to fill Pat's shoes. I have zero tolerance for back-stabbers and whiners lol.

I went and bought everything necessary to build my own motors. Pat was going to train me using my own equipment. However it became apparent that our good man Pat is (against his wishes) entering a new phase of his life. One that we all enter. The one where we spend more time on the porch smiling and remembering the crazy stuff we've done. Pat is my mentor. He is a kindred soul.

In September I spent 3 weeks in the Nevada desert. One week with my beautiful hot-blooded Latin woman who is the only woman capable of reining in what she calls my "stupidities". How right she is. That 3 weeks in the Nevada desert allowed something to happen. I was finally admitted into a very closed society of old-time gold miners. The secrets run deep out there.

I was blessed with an ability to apply today's modern satellite technology to the old-school mapping of our country. The PLSS system. Through this ability I protect the old-time miners from those where dollar signs are their only motivation. Where they use tricks to steal mining claims that have been in families for generations. They can't do that while I'm around and the old-timers are thankful.

After 5 years they trust me out there in Northern Nevada. And they shared with me their secret mining operation. They need me and I need them because they know where the gold is located. I was born 160 years too late. My heart is back in the mid 1800's and Northern Nevada still lives that way in some remote areas.

With Pat G no longer able to help me build an R motor the project began losing steam for me. I realized I was light-years behind the ability to produce one on my own. The amount of effort required became a show-stopper. And the mining in Nevada has become a full-time draw when I'm not flying. I am aching to get back out there in December. We have some digging to do.

To Pat G I say thanks my friend! And to others on here like Dave who can be a PITA but who was instrumental in driving the discussion I give a big thanks. Dave you were the best part of this team over the past year. I'd "hire" you again in a minute.

Perhaps the motors and launch trailer will sell quickly. Perhaps not. I'll slowly drop the prices until they reach the point on the supply/demand curve where they get sold. I'm not bitter in any sense. Knowing I can still build a bad-azz rocket (with lots of help lol) is very satisfying.

My life is filled with many great adventures. My time will come soon enough where I'm on the porch smiling and thinking of what has happened and what could have been. But Theory again is right. It's time to retire one of the best threads ever on TRF. You guys were awesome.

And I salute you.

Chuck C.

Chuck,

That you for the kind words, sir. It was an honor and a privilege working with you .

Whenever you are ready, you can reach me, most easily, by email [email protected]

Stay safe out there in the desert and watch your six . . . "two-legged rattlesnakes" are drawn to "easy scores" !

Until we meet again, Chuck,

Mr. Rail Dawg please keep the thread open, it will slowly drift away anyway. I've followed it from the beginning and this thread is one of the most comprehensive/ thought out build threads I have seen.

I would love to see your progress with pics, etc. on your new endeavor continued on this thread. There is already a "connection." Either way best of luck to you!

For those interested I've updated the "R" motor casing for sale in the Yard Sale section of our forum.

https://www.rocketryforum.com/threads/professionally-built-r-complete-motor-casings.155521/

Can only sell one motor right now as the builder after almost 60 days hasn't delivered on a promise to send the closures and nozzle for the second motor casing.

Like a dummy I paid in advance lol. When will I learn???

Take a look. It is an incredible motor.

And by the way thanks guys for all the well wishers! Rocketeers are my favorite group of people. We have a few bad apples but thank goodness they are few and far between!

Thanks!

Chuck C.

I had a good time watching this thread! I thought Chuck and his team really did a great job of looking at all the angles and figuring out solutions to the problems that Chuck presented as he moved along.

I don't get where the idea that motor should be built by the rocket builder comes into play? If you're having a motor of that magnitude built, and obviously by a very experienced and well know builder, how is this bad? That's taking safety into account! You're launching with a known quantity. That's just being smart.

As for Chuck not designing the rocket, I'm not sure I get this either. I followed this thread from day one. A lot of people had input, but most of it came from Chuck's mind and he had the pieces cut that he needed, etc.

Negativity about this kind of thing annoys me. Everything was here on the thread for all to see! If you didn't like something you saw you could have PMed, or even replied to the thread. Granted, I'm no rocket genius. I enjoy them and had intended to go for my L1 this season, but sadly didn't even get to launch anything at all. My L1 rocket sat all season, ready to go, as did my entire collection. I liked looking through this thread, however!

Have fun getting some gold! Hope you strike it rich, Chuck!

Not sure where you are coming from on this. If it is the certification requirement to build your own motor that is actually the assembly of the commercial motor. Otherwise was there a post I missed that talked about Chuck not building his own motor casing?

Well-written post!

There's always that 1%. I don't pay much attention although they can be a burr in the saddle.

Of course I had lots of help with this rocket! A lot of it came from this forum and trust me that was a bone of contention with many of the old-timers.

Crew Resource Management (CRM) is an integral part of the team these days. The airlines, railroads, shipping, hospitals... the reason we are seeing less accidents is because of CRM (and technology). The Captain learns to listen to all available input before making a decision. If there's time of course lol. While maintaining the authority of the Captain the rest of the crew is encouraged to provide input.

I chose to bring in a wide variety of expertise and use that expertise to ferret out the best course of action. The result? An "R" powered rocket that is rock-solid. Couldn't have done it without a lot of help.

I see this rocket as an outstanding example of what can be done even online.

To heck with the naysayers. The idea worked. We were all engaged.

The 1% will always be there. I simply assign a low priority to their opinions.

Chuck C.

You've always done a good job being professional and courteous Chuck.
And although I have posted rarely on this thread ( but when I did I said a lot ) I read a lot of it. By and large most everyone was courteous and helpful. Your right, rocket folks are a great group of people. There is a few, like you said, bad apples, but like my Grandmother taught me, you'll live just as long and die just as happy by ignoring them.

And I don't intend to relegate myself to my rocking chair just yet. Although I am no longer working all over the planet, I do keep working my solar install company, and running a 1000 acre ranch. And even occasionally making rocket motor reloads and rockets.

BTW, my part in this project was to help design the motor parameters based in the ending project size, and design the propellant. I did not make the hardware. In fact, the single hardware set that Chuck is selling now he didn't even get until LDRS. So with me trying to kick off with widow maker heart attacks (there were two) and another two blood clots lodged in my brain, the odds of Chuck flying his project before the gold bug bit him was against us. All that said, I am doing much better now, and my bride Mrs. Retta has both her whip and stick out making sure I behave. She even shredded my passport so I couldn't go galivanting off to some remote continent to work. My leash btw is ninety nine miles from the front gate.

And say Chuck, what are you gonna do with that complete Q motor propellant reload set? Light if off in the desert so it will be seen from orbit? LOL.

Later folks.

Pat G

Good question about the Q reload Pat... hmmm what to do with it?

Right now at $4,000 no one is going for the complete motor casing I have for sale. Add another grain to this Q reload and this motor is ready to fly in that 10 ft casing.

Still waiting for the casing builder to send the parts for the second motor promised for delivery to LDRS. After 60 days not sure what my options are. Like a dummy I paid up front with the promise the closures, o-rings and closure removal tool would be shipped the following week. That didn't happen.

That Q motor is packaged well for storage but it sure would be nice to have it put to good use.

Below is the "R" motor casings all crated up and ready for delivery to the first taker. If I don't get $4,000 each I'll just sit on them for awhile. May have to ship one of them back to the builder as a return lol.

Chuck, rocketry has a way of attracting the dreamers just to kick them in the newts. I wish you well out in the desert chasing the next dream. May the world never dampen your spirit. I let mine die out many years ago and I am slowly learning to light the fire again.

Jarrett I appreciate what you're saying. Get that fire going again. We all go through periods of highs and lows.

You seem like a great guy... keep those dreams alive!

Maybe it was just that Pat was designing the propellant. Now that I think about it, I think Chuck was actually having the casing built assembling the motor himself. All for nought at the moment, unfortunately. I didn't mean it to sound negative, if that's what was coming across.

Way above my paygrade, as they say!:D

I didn't take it as a challenge at all Tyler.

This is a complicated hobby with lots of variables. The only way we're going to learn is by stepping up to the plate. Ask questions. Test theories.

As mentioned before I thoroughly enjoy an environment where it's ok to be wrong and the group self-corrects.

In a nutshell the "R" motor casing was built for me. Perfectly legit and that's a good thing lol. Pat G supervised fyrechaser and me making the Q motor (5 grains). Again all legit.

I take copious notes whether it's rocketry or mining or whatever. There's no way to remember all the rules and tricks verbatim we live by. Nothing wrong with a refresher course so your questions Tyler are spot on.

Glad to hear you are doing well, it was pretty scary news. And while some here might think you are kidding about Retta shredding your passport, I don't doubt it for a second. I suspect her surveillance of you will be fairly draconian for quite a while. Hopefully we'll see you both at a launch somewhere in the future.

Thanks Dave.

This information needs to get out. I’ve been getting a lot of e-mails from fellow rocketeers on this.

I bit my tongue for months but getting ripped off on this last motor tipped the scales.

Chuck,

You are the victim here . . . You dealt openly and honestly, while others chose a different path.

Hopefully, they will see the error of their ways and do the right thing to correct this situation.

The problem here is far too big to be swept under the carpet, leaving another person vulnerable to
the same situation, at some point in the future !

Believe it or not that little chunk of rock is worth $2000 lol.

Rocketry and mining are two very expensive hobbies. But like someone mentioned with mining you actually have a chance for a return. With rockets you're never sure if they will return or not lol!

Chuck C.

Nice rock there, I never missed an episode of Gold Rush and Bering Sea Gold, my favoritest shows. As far as your motor parts are concerned I at least hope you get them. I would say that a custom order like that if the parts are completed already would be hard to cancel for a refund. If they are not completed yet, there should not be a problem with a refund. Either way a total run-a- round on the status of your order is totally unacceptable. There have been many reputable vendors/kit makers in this hobby that for some reason feel that it is ok to rip someone off before never hearing from them again.

Time to shut it down. Rocket has been built and appears will never fly. If it ever makes it to the pad, we can open thread at that juncture!
