Thanks Crossfire and Steve! Good to know. I just could find anywhere it mentioned if the cases were stacked or if just using the adapters was acceptable.
It looks like next payday is time for motor hardware.
Today after a few errands I mounted the fwd bulkhead and looked at how I was going start putting fins in.
It’s hot in my area today. Just a few minutes and my 30 min epoxy had already flashed over.
For now I really don’t want to get too far ahead of myself. So until I get the lower fin can completed I am not going to skip around in any way other than to fill the nose cone voids and wrinkles, sand smooth and get it ready for paint.
Brother in Law is already asking “When are you going to fly this?”
 
Wildman has a 38/600 special that includes the spacers although I would rather get the 38/720.
Go for the 38/720 motor. You can L1 with the I600, then when you're comfortable, throw in the J350 for your L2. :cool:
I guess you could still get some spacers...;)

I am still up in the air on engine type yet.
Home from work today, a brief nap and an hours worth of work on the aft fin can.
Using 400 wet paper I de-glossed the airframe and roughed up around the slots with some 120.
Blew everything off with some compressed air and then very thorough wipe down inside and out with IPA.
I let everything dry for an hour and tacked the fins in place with 5 min epoxy. Tomorrow I’ll pull the aft centering ring and start putting in internal fillets.
It’s starting to resemble a rocket now.

During the week I’ve ordered my 54mm retainer, 3854 adapter and a 38600 Aerotech special all from Wildman Rocketry.
Actual hands on work was setting two sets of internal fin fillets and two external.
The internals, when the epoxy was nice and liquid look pretty good with 100 % coverage of the airframe and the fin.
The external fillets look pretty good as well.
I don’t think they turned out too bad. I’ve not done any epoxy-micro ballon work since assisting with a Very EZ build in my much younger days.
 
Looks great! I just finished mine up as well, electronics testing and retention was the last thing to do. Maidening it on an I211W to a Sim'd 2100' on the 20th of the month. Given the extra weight, I'm using a 60" main instead of the 54" supplied.62578923_305576800397637_7301402948175659008_n.jpg

I've not done much sim wise on mine yet, I want to get a little closer to the finish and find what my final weight will be.
I am thinking of the I305FJ or I435T for the 1st flight and Level 1 attempt. I will also be up sizing my chute to the 60 main from the provided 54.
I would love to be done by the 20th to head to Tri-Cities for launch, I just don't want to rush things and I also don't think I could get a motor in time.
So first time will have to wait for the Labor day launch at Tri-Cities.

It’s coming together. I’ve finished the booster, minus some epoxy touch ups and another sanding with 400.
I’ve also moved up into the lower airframe. The CPR has been placed and the upper CPR set in place just so I can see how this is going together.
Today I also received my parts from Wildman, and have looked them over. I have to wait a few days for my adapter yet so I can’t see how everything fits motor wise.
Every day, I just glue one or two more areas and let re for 24 before moving to the next step.
Looking over my previous posts, I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to proof read everything two or three times or quit posting using my I pad, that quite frequently changes what I have typed.
 
No pictures for now. I spent a couple of hours fitting and gluing the coupler/av bay together. Fit check, fit check fit check. I was having difficulty getting everything to line up. When joined together that last 5/8 in of the forward recovery section would not start. Finally I pulled everything apart and sanded just a tiny bit from the forward centering ring. After the sanding one more fit check and I was happy how it all fit together.
This was when I realized I made a slight goof by getting ahead of myself.
Waiting for other epoxies to set I went ahead and put the pistons together. With the piston in place that coupler would need to be fed in from the top. Easily doable I figured, just feed it from the top, pull all the way out, place epoxy, feed in coupler.
The pain of the piston strap in the way......
I did the right thing. I cut the piston off, fed the strap back into the coupler and glued it in place per the instructions. It went together pretty easy after all my fit checks. I am really glad I did those.
One thing I did do different is to wait on gluing the upper fins. I didn’t want those in the way wile working the coupler/av-bay. Those four fins is the last of my assembly that required adhesives, (plus re-gluing that piston) Final detail will be filling and sanding the nose cone a little bit, final overall sanding and paint. Probably another two weeks work at my current rate
Like so many before me, I wanted to go with 60 in parachute. Since my budget is draining I figured why not get one of the Aerocon $12.00 ones for now. Discount for more than one so I made it two.
Nice parachute, but very much on the heavy side. I”ll probably still use it, with the sacrifice of a little altitude, but right now that is not my goal. Just getting my Level1 is. So if it works, I’ll accept it.

Progress for today....I printed a fin guide from Payload Bay, cut it from the side of a cardboard box from the stash in the garage. It’s crude and ugly but it works. The forward fins are tacked into position with 5 minute epoxy.
They are nice and straight. That was something I was worried about since these fins don’t have much to grip.
Later this week I’ll place some fillets along them.
I am still considering putting on a single layer of 8oz glass.
 
Just a small update. I spent the weekend doing quality time with the son. An afternoon at our local amusement park standing in lines for the rides, brief rides and home. Sunday was a day at the local playground.
Rocket wise I de-glossed the mid section and placed the internal fillet around the lower piston. Not enough of anything to merit photos.
In the “in between” I’ve also been working on my Mercury Engineering Hijacker.
I know this isn’t the place for mid power, but I figured if I am going to drive for nearly 5 hours to Pasco for Sod Busters in Sept, I want to fly more than just a single hi power to attempt my Level I.
So, my low power Renegade clone (1271 version) The Hijacker and the AMRAAM I hope will all see some initial flights.
 
I’ve spent 2 weeks ordering rocket items. Missile Works RRC3 and accessories. Rocket motors and a few other items.
First thing I did was to check the fit of the RRC3. It will work, but will need modifications of the sled.
I spent a short time taping the Fwd section fins getting ready for fillets.
If I am going to fly this Labor Day weekend I need to buckle down and get it done.
 
It's been sometime since I've posted, or even worked on this project. Life seems to get in the way.
Mrs. has been ill, and so far there is not a diagnosis on what is happening. Work, don't even want to go down that road and then the I-pad that I normally use for lurking and posting here quit functioning.
I had so hoped to get this done and fly at Sod Buster. It doesn't look like that is going to happen. Perhaps with luck I could make it over in October. There really is not much left to do. I still need to modify the av-bay and put the remaining fillets on the upper stage, test the whole thing.
By the time I get off work I am so beat, and then home to run heard on the 5YO, fix dinner and other home duties while Mrs is down.
I wouldn't change anything except maybe make work a little easier, (that will come once things get straightened out) and Mrs better. I hope that gets a diagnosis soon. 6 months on and still no clue.
 
Over the last couple of days I’ve managed to work on this thing. I’ve finished all the fillets and installed the motor retainer. All that was left was to figure out how to use the altimeter I purchased with this rocket. Filing away some of the fore and aft blocks I was able to place it, tightly. Somehow in drilling the holes for the standoffs I drifted just a bit. Enough so that I can only install two of the four fasteners to mount the altimeter. I’ll work on adjusting the other two a little later.
Piecing everything together there is just enough room for a battery. A very small zip tie is the only way to ensure positive battery retention. With the match wires, battery wires and switch wires, it is not pretty. And most of all I really don’t like it. It feels and looks like a hack job, and it is.
I could just ditch this sled and altimeter and go with a new one and the altimeter PML sells for this, and hope it works better.
All in all if I make it to SB and it flies and I get my Level I I will be happy. Will this rocket fly again, probably not.
I did get it done, less the paint. I need to get a good strong 9v to test tomorrow. I hope it works if not, well no big deal to me. I’ve invested a lot of time a sweat into this But I’ve just grown to not like this rocket.
In hindsight, I really wish I had gone with a more conventional dual deploy. I think a Super DX3 or the Level 2 will be the one I will work on building next.

Even though I’ve not posted on this thread in some time, I’ve continued to work on this monster.
It is complete. It will fly, hopefully return in one piece!
Between Mrs being ill, my job and getting the 5 YO started on the beginnings of his long school journey time has been short.
Decals are thrown on but not neatly, and placed as nearly as I could from photos of a Czech model.
I loaded a charge in each bay and fired it off in the back yard.
Since this is my first experience with high power I was not sure what to expect on how it fired.
Drogue fired with a nice pow and extended to the full length of the TN.
5 YO thought is was pretty cool.
Firing the main next was not as audible, the nose cone a main extended beautifully to the end of the TN, however the piston remained inside the BT. I think this was my doing since I loaded the charges light at .85 gm instead of the 1 per instructions.
Next up is learning the altimeter. I played with it for a few minutes, Mrs and 5YO were screaming for me to stop. The beeping was getting on their nerves. I never heard a sound so I need to figure this one out.
One low power, ( perhaps) one mid power for sure and this high power are ready to fly at Tri Cities in Oct. I WILL be going.
 
Hi there! Are you still on track for the Oct 12th launch in the Tri-Cities? Where abouts are you coming from? Hope your AMRAAM is ready to fly!
 
Hello! The AMRAAM is complete, sitting in its cradle waiting for Oct 12.
I am still planning on being there along with a few other builds I hope to fly. The AMRAAM for Level 1 attempt, the rest (Mercury Engineering Hijacker, and a cloned Estes Renegade (original version) for fun.
I will be coming from Camas, WA. Directly across the river from Portland.
Plans are up around 4 ish and drive over.
(4ish is late for me, I’m usually at work by theme!
 
Oct 12 at the sod farm with Tri Cities Rocketeers I launched this with a I366R.
The rocket flew straight and true leaving the rod at 335fps.
Apogee was at 1933 ft. Thrust curve had a prediction of 1790 ft.
The drogue deployed and at 500 ft the main came out beautifully and it continued to fall, pulling the main along with it. Just about 100 ft from the ground the main fully inflated and it was just beautiful to see!
After the range was open out to get the rocket and everything was streamed out in a perfect line. No damage whatsoever.
Level 1 passed.
I was asked if I was going to use the same rocket for Level 2.
That remains to be seen. If I study and am ready but don’t have an alternate ready, I will use this one again.
It is still not a favorite, but it did do what I asked of it!

Great flight and fun one to watch, was definitely a bit of a cliff hanger until the main untangled and fully inflated. I would recommend moving your drogue chute about 4' to 6' from the payload bay (or at least closer) that allows the fin can to be below the payload bay when deployment occurs.

That was indeed me. Using that CPR3K system negated using the motor for ejection. This was my first attempt at high power as well as my first attempt with dual deploy.
I was happy with the way it turned out!
 
Great flight and fun one to watch, was definitely a bit of a cliff hanger until the main untangled and fully inflated. I would recommend moving your drogue chute about 4' to 6' from the payload bay (or at least closer) that allows the fin can to be below the payload bay when deployment occurs.
Thanks for the recommendation, I tied it where PML said to on the instructions, it resulted in that cliffhanger. I have moved it for the next time this one flies!
