So driving back home to Ohio I got pulled over in Indiana. We rented a car to use on vacation as we both have had car problems and didn't want to break down away from home. The car we rented had Kentucky plates.
So I was driving on I-70 through Indiana. I was in the right lane using the adaptive cruise control. The car was set for 69 in a 70 mph zone, but the cruise control had held the car at 64 for miles as it kept a safe distance from the tractor trailer in front of me. I-70 is in poor condition in this area and I really had no desire to speed up or get in the left lane to pass people, so I just stayed at 64 mph. Also, the left lane was full of vehicles which were much closer to each other than I was to the truck in front of me.
I see two cars in the median more or less hiding behind one of the big portable signs on a trailer. They were obviously police, but as I was well under the speed limit I didn't worry about it. However, after I passed the sign one of them pulls out. I wondered who he was going after. I soon discovered it was me.
The officer walks up to the car and he says, "You were following the truck in front of you a little too closely". I wasn't and I replied that I was using the car's radar and then realized it would be better not to argue. We gave him the car's rental agreement and my license. He asked what we did and we both said we were retired; I used to be an engineer at an aerospace company and my wife was an environmental specialist with the Air Force. He went back to his car and came back a minute later and said we were free to go.
After we pulled away I told my wife we got pulled over for DWH - Driving While Hillbilly. He saw those Kentucky plates and pulled us over hoping to find a couple of rubes doing something he could arrest them for. He wasn't expecting a couple of retired professionals on vacation.
