I started working on a Goony Vulcan many years ago but I got frustrated with the graphics editor and never finished it. I like the idea, I just don't have the Photoshop or Gimp skills to make it happen.

Had a little set back yesterday. I positioned the paint mask wrong and ended up with this.Oops.jpg

Now I need to sand it down smooth to get rid of the paint edges, re-spray white and try again. I should of had the picture in front of me when I put that mask on...

Um, that looks correct to me? What am I missing?

(other than that the black roll pattern on top is missing, but that's an omission that doesn't require sanding etc.)

The black stripe going up is supposed to be centered over the fin.

I have found that trying to do too much at one time leads to problems for me. I was tempted to spray all the black at once but listened to my inner voice saying "don't do it".

So I am using my cricut to cut the masks. Well when I went to pull the mask off about 5 minutes after I sprayed, the mask wasn't pulling off clean. It was pulling the paint with it. It was like gooey. Do you think I was trying to pull it off to early? I am kinda wondering if I am getting some sort of reaction between the paint and the vinyl or if I am just jumping the gun...

-Bob

Yes, 5 minutes is too early, because the paint (as you found) is still gooey. I'm not sure what the best time to de-mask is, haven't figured that out myself. I usually do it days later, and suffer some chipping at the mask line as a result.

Too soon: goo
Too late: chips

From Chris's blog: "I tend to pull up the tape before the paint has totally dried."

That would suggest to me, something around a day, plus or minus, for Rusto 2x.

Neil knows... He is like the Shadow :)

It was Rustoleum 2X

I think it's time to wet sand now :(

Here's something that I got started and stalled for a Holverson Designs comeback that never happened in the middle '00s. I got in touch with my inner Gooney and my inner Fink, all at once.

And a bonus sketch, drawn during the cognitive dissonance of a feel good meeting about the coming Compaq plant closure.

Thank you but I just realized I have forgotten the black rectangles in the yellow area. I think they were antennas or sensors of some sort...

Back to the work bench.

Hmmn, not following "I also think the enemy of “good” is “better.”

Here is my "better" Patriot :) I also added something it will need if it ever meets up with a launch rod--the launch lug.

Love the Goony Patriot! I've forgotten a few launch lugs myself -
Here I go, highjacking the thread -

Here's something that I got started and stalled for a Holverson Designs comeback that never happened in the middle '00s. I got in touch with my inner Gooney and my inner Fink, all at once.

In the early 1970s I took a road trip South to Disneyland a Knott's Berry Farm.
After going to those two parks we decided to see a "Cars of the Stars" attraction next to Knott's.
They had quite a few of the Ed Big Daddy Roth vehicles on display. They were rough, lots of banged up fiberglass.
I asked about how they got the cars - The girl said: "Oh the designer works in the gift shop at the end of the walking tour."
He must of had part ownership in the museum.
I went to the gift shop asking about Ed Big Daddy Roth - The employee said: "Oh, it's his day off. He'll be back in two days!"
I didn't get to meet one of my childhood heroes. I guess he later found religion and didn't return to his Rat Fink days.

I just looked up his history on Wikipedia - Roth worked for Knott's Berry Farm as a sign painter until 1980.
I entertained at Knott's the Summer of 1979 - Didn't know he was there!

Goony Patriot is ready to go. Sewed up some elastic for the harness, attached the parachute with a swivel and attached the nose cone. The monthly launch is this weekend and it will be attending. Launch report to follow...

The Goony Patriot flew today. The first flight was on a A8-5 which was a mistake. It shot up to about 100 feet, rolled on over and came straight down into the ground. The chute popped rIght after it impacted. Minimum damage, just a little roll at the end of the tube.

I was done with it for the day but then someone handed me an A8-3 to try. Flew much better on that, just seriously it had no altitude. No more A engines for the little goony.

I did get a video but I haven't figured out how to edit it.

Thanks to this thread I now know what the term "Goony" refers to. Someone had referred to the squirrel rocket I'm building as a possible "Goony" and I had no idea what that meant. Now I am enlightened. And these are great little rockets - I completely understand the appeal.

I'm guessing that a goony Mosquito would probably qualify as a MicroMaxx...
