Today's addition is the Quest Icarus (2006)



It's the version of the kit that I have in my collection, with a cardboard tube coupler and the paper disk (bulkhead) used for the payload section. I've got the parts needed to sim up a newer version (if it exists) that uses a plastic tube coupler and bulkhead (like the SuperBird (2010) does). I'll upload that if I can confirm that it exists. The "decals" and colors are taken from scans of the real thing. Funny thing... The "8.5 inch White Payload Tube" (PN 11500) in my sample was glossy black.

Let's make it a twofer today... I'm adding the Quest SuperBird (2010) to the list.



This kit is very similar to the Quest Icarus (2006). I've had it mostly complete for a long time, but it's taken me a while to get the actual kit in hand and have the time to finish the sim.

The newer version is slightly longer, thanks to the plastic tube coupler it uses. It also has a plastic bulkhead but is otherwise identical to the older version. Properly built, the only real obvious visible difference is that the plastic coupler has a molded in launch lug.

This thread reminds me of a story - my uncle was researching 20th century fox for a documentary and Pre Internet days, had to build his own DB of all the film properties 2KF had...

Fast forward a few years, and fox discovered his database was better than their own, so the bought it from him.

How long before someone offers you money for your ORK collection!!

I am K'Tesh! (a name I chose for myself) Son of K'Raig! (Really! (just without the apostropy)(and his "R" is actually lowercase)
Host of K'Tesh's Klingon Recipe Pages! (which went out of order with the demise of Geocities)
My recipe for Rokeg Blood Pie was (apparently) used on DS9.
KKRP was a database documenting the various food items in the Star Trek universe, either by mention (orally, or written), or seen on screen. If it got mentioned in a book, comic, cartoon, movie, or on TV, it was eligible for inclusion. In the TNG episode "A Matter Of Honor", Riker was asked for his opinion on the Rokeg Blood Pie, and he replied "Delicious". However, he didn't point to the food item. It later turned out that it did appear on screen, but without being identified. So, until then, I was on my own in creating it.

I tried various ideas, until I struck upon a recipe for an Asian almond gelatin dessert called "Ha Nong Woo". With some burgundy food coloring, it looked like something that would be blood from an animal from Q'onoS (The idea worked like this: If fish blood resembles mammal blood... wouldn't rokeg blood resemble Klingon blood?). Fast forward to DS9's episode "Resurrection", and a dish appears on screen that looks just like mine. They didn't name it, but it was served just after the meal (which makes me think it was a dessert). It was featured prominently in the scene, and I wasn't credited for it. That said, I suspect someone from the show found my website, and used it as a nod to my work.

Back to rocketry and my OpenRocket files. Actually I've been compensated for some of my work. Namely in free kits, and/or free shipping.

LOL maybe that can happen with my OpenRocket parts database. But unlike a film database, there's no entity with a real need and real money to put down on it.

I suspect that is what we'll find here too.

Ok... Major futzing behind the scenes here... The index became unmanageable when the forum jumped to the new service. Due to limits on the number of characters in a single post, I was forced to make some serious changes to the first few posts just so I could update the index.

I had to pull the index out of the second post and create a new thread for it (which required 4 posts just to handle what has been done already). I also took the opportunity to sort the index into a list based on manufacturer and kit number (or name for those that I don't have kit numbers for) instead of the old method (1st ork 1st, 2nd ork 2nd, etc...). I think it'll be much more useful now.

Because the first post (with the PSA) had to be split in to several posts (again due to length restrictions) just to allow me to update it, several subsequent posts had to be shifted down until things could stabilize with lengths. I've already started shifting the .ork files around to match up what is actually contained in the post, but all those files for the Omega are going to take some time.

While I was at it, I've also gone through and changed the way that the attached .ork files are viewed in all the posts. With the transition, the old way became a link in line with the body of the post but, the new way is a link at the bottom of the page. The changes made were to make them standardized to the new service's method of displaying them.

That was fun! I hope you'll all like the changes.

Now we can get back to the show...

Today, I won another eBay auction. I've spent the day working on a sim of the kit. However, I don't know the length of the launch lug, nor the thickness of the fins. So, this is just a place holder until I get those questions answered. It's the Estes Ranger (1955).



The temporary fins that I'm using are based on the drawing from JimZ's site. Since I don't have a scan of them, I won't be posting the .ork until I do. That said, the decals are from a scan (with ruler) that I did from a kit I cannibalized years ago to become a D powered clone of the Estes Exocet 38MM (1925).

Something I should say about the 1955... Those decals are a tad unusual... We can all see the "pretty side (which I featured in the photo above), but what about the other side? Um...



Where the second name decal is supposed to go, and how the spiral wrap was supposed to meet up apparently weren't taken into account by the art department. My decal placement was based on what can be seen in the 1986 Estes catalog.

But since I couldn't afford it, I'm glad to see you are the one that got it K'Tesh!
I know it will see some flight time.
I have an original K-6 Ranger someone gifted me (I have forgotten who that was, sorry to that person) that had a badly chewed up nose cone.
I ordered a new one from eRockets and can fix the BT that was chewed a little on one end.
I'll be doing a build thread on that one when I get some of this other stuff off my bench I have going right now.
At your request sir, I can scan what ever you need and get it off to you if you wish.
Enjoy the Ranger! And I would like a copy of the scans if you can.
I would like to clone it, and get vinyl for the decal.

You want a .ork of the Astron Ranger (K-6)? You've got my email address. Scan the flat parts (decals if you've got any, and the fin's pattern with a ruler. I'd love a fresh scan of the instructions too. I'm sure that JimZ's or plans.rocketshoppe has them, but I'm into documenting variations, and who knows if you've got a variant that they don't.

I've edited the link to the decal scan of the Ranger's decals into its post.

Here's today's addition... The Estes Astron Ranger (K-6)... However, until someone can answer my question about the fin I'm not going to release the .ork file.


I'm very uncertain about this... 'cause it's not stable according to my first look at it. -0.047 calibers? I will update the images I've uploaded when I get that info.

Instructions were found on JimZ's site, The fins were imported from the unscaled image found there too (and right now are a complete guess as to their length). Color scheme is based on the 1971 catalog.

It's been a scary few days. I'd been thinking about posting this for Halloween, but I've had some computer problems again. I had to format the hard drive again so I could get internet access (corrupted drivers)(previous resolutions to solve the problem failed this time), but at least I was able to backup the HD first this time. Rather than wait for the date I desired to post it, I'm letting Estes' The BAT (1362) out of the technological HELL I've been in lately...




This is actually what I'd call a good guess... The decals and fins were obtained from JimZ's site. They didn't have any dimensional information, but with the catalog's numbers, and some careful scaling I'm within .001" of the specs given (Catalog: 16.63" (16 19/30") Vs Mine: 16.629" (16 5/8")). I suspect that Estes simply rounded up to the nearest .01 in the catalog. I did some deductions on the dimensions of the decals... The body of the bat fits neatly between the fins, and deducting the width of the 3 fins from the circumference, and dividing the results gave me my dimensions. The wings were scaled from that. Something that I have guessed on is the wing/body joints. I don't think they were meant be applied to only the body tube or the fin. I suspect there was some overlap involved, and have modeled it on that (makes the joints align much better).

I've got the rocket nearly built, but the editing on the video build series is taking me some time. There were a few issues during filming - including the fact that the way I had the camera set up, I got a lot of shots of just the back of my head (it was an overhead shot and I kept sticking my darn noggin in the way of the work I was doing).

Anyway, very nice kit, simple build, and I'd be long since done with it if I weren't filming the whole thing.

Glad to hear Scott pulled through the surgery!
 
I don't know what stopped me from posting these before... They've been done for some time. Apogee's Aspire (5024)

This kit has a mod to allow it to reach the speed of sound using 3 fins...

The kit also comes with a 24 mm adapter to allow it to fly on smaller motors (the sims include this too). Unlike the SBR Diablo sim (above) this gave altitudes despite having two "motor tubes".

Ok... Next up on the block is Estes' Executioner (1951)

The older version used different motors than the current version. It also uses an E-Engine Hook, and had a different style of mounting the shock cord (IMHO the newer version's shock cord/mount is better as it can be easily replaced, if needed, and is considerably longer than the old).

Due to the recent press involved with a modified version of this rocket, here's the stock version of the Quest Magnum Sport Loader (3012):

Due to the limitations of OR Version 15.03, I had to omit the engine clips on this one (it would take unsupported pods to allow them to be displayed, I can do it, but only in a developer's version of OR). Due to the standoff, I had to externalize an "Inner tube" to allow simulate the launch lug, and display properly. While it adds mass, it's not factored by OR into the drag calculation.

I had to shorten the aft transition of the payload section to get it to rest properly on the top of the body tube. To compensate for that, I had to shorten the conic section, and then extend the shoulder. I also needed to reposition the blue shoulder tube to get it into the right location. The payload section .ork file will not look like the image below. It has been adjusted to allow it to be copied and pasted, intact, into a sim without modifications, while displaying correctly.

I'm in touch with Curtis Brooks, the builder of Reed Timmer's "Dorothy" variant. Reed, and his Team Dominator, used a modified version of the Quest Magnum Sport Loader to launch a sensor package named "Bill Paxton" into a tornado. Here's where I am at this time, and once he can get me some of the details, I'll post the .ork file I've created.

The main hold up on this is the launch lug, and the locations of the forward fins. I'm also looking for info on the parachutes and shock cords. I've also reached out to ChasinSpin to create an included basic sim of the sensor payload itself.

Awesome to see this. Awesome to see a sim which looks more accurate than the one I have, which might have been downloaded from Apogee, or maybe I made it myself in my early days.

I do have a question: Is it possible to print the decals shown on an OR sim? I've got a few of yours downloaded, and when I click on Appearance, it looks like it shows a file location, but I can never actually find that location. Maybe it's just something saved in the sim itself, and can't be printed?

I'm prompted to ask that question now, because my Magnum Sport Loader has some damage, and I'll probably have to cut the tube and replace about a third of it. I might want to reprint the decal.

Thanks! I've seen some sims that came from manufacturers (popular ones at that) that didn't match up with the actual kits. Since this was once part of a flame war I was involved with (since locked and deleted on TRF), I'll not be naming names.

Printing decals? Nope. These are typically 100 pixels to the inch images and they are expanded to match the entire surface they are covering... Imagine this... a single "." (period) decal on a BT-60 Body tube 18" long would requires an image with the following dimensions (in pixels) 1800 x 514 (which is π multiplied by the diameter (1.637) and rounded to the nearest whole number)), with the period placed properly (it's even trickier for fins, especially when there's writing or a pattern on it that can't be mirrored). FYI, The Magnum Sport Loader's decals have been uploaded by huffer in my request for info thread.

Producing nosecones as a template? Your idea would be a nice function, but... Nope. However, if you do a screen capture of the line drawing (possibly scaling it), you could enlarge/reduce it using a photocopier/graphics program. I'd recommend saving the file as a .ork file with the nosecone/transition only (or finding my nosecone .ork for that particular one in the nosecone library) and going from there. On a related subject, I wish that OR would allow us to import nosecone shapes (with circular cross sections) into it like we can with fins.

I've been working on a TOP SECRET project, and now it can be revealed...

The Der Big Red Max II (1977)(Two Stage, Payload Mod)



It's an "E" Powered two stage, payload version, of the Der Big Red Max (1977). To build it, you'd need two DRMs (for the decals, one nosecone, a parachute and shock cord, and the booster/payload section body tubes), two "E" sized Motor Mounts, an 18" body tube, a tube coupler, and a Balsa Nosecone Block (w/screw eye).

The .ork file for it is over in post #203

My mental story has this as the results of German spies stealing partial plans for the Citation Patriot II, and trying to reproduce it.

Both rockets share a 5.5" long payload section. This is an homage to the length of the payload section from the Estes Magnum (1422). The motor mounts are based on the Semroc Omega (KV-64).

The Citation Patriot II and Der Big Red Max II boosters both are based on the Semroc Omega (KV-64) booster. I don't know if they'll tumble, but they are lightweight. I've only had one of my 2 stage design's booster achieve any kind of stability... That was for the 2 stage Estes Sentinel Missile, and instead of tumbling, it glided gracefully down, and into the only tree around (a 10' pine tree, and about 5' off the ground). The Sentinel's booster was based on the Estes Magnum Payloader.

Can you sim just the booster, with a motor, without a motor, and with an expended motor to see where the cg ends up ? It should be possible to balance the Booster for Tumble, if the CG shift causes an issue.

I could... If I knew the mass of an expended "E" casing. Also... for my own personal interest. What is the wall thickness of an E casing?

[EDIT] "Wall diameter"? This is what happens when I reply to a post less than 5 minutes after crawling out of bed. Corrected.

Did you design it for 24mm or 29mm E motors ?

On a 24mm case ( C11, D12, E9, E12 ), an "educated guess" would be .125" wall thickness ( without measuring it ).

Something else to consider . . . With an expended case, the mass of the clay nozzle will cause more weight to be located further aft, rather than simply treating the expended casing as a constant density "mass object" in the sim.
