I've had this idea rattling around in my head for a while, and I think it would be super fun to try. A rocket that looks like fried chicken. I'm thinking using crumpled pieces of napkin or toilet paper soaked in elmer's glue as a paper mache to get the fried texture, and paint with some textured brown paint and black speckles. But I'm stuck on the fins. Would it work and look better with an actual KFC bucket as a big ring fin, or should I go with balsa "chicken wings".

The rocket would be BT80 and between 36 and 42 inches long, flying on F or G motors.

Well, after winging it, if this doesn't work, it might end up kicking the bucket.

Please keep us abreast of the results.
 
Seriously though, the bucket would be likely the better choice (inverted). Hope though that the motor doesn't CATO, otherwise, thighs might get... (Drumstick please!) Extra Crispy!

Oh, I will report that despite the fondness of the Chinese for both chicken feet, and heads, KFC does not sell them (Thank God!) here in the PRC. I can't do with food looking at me, and the idea of chicken feet these days just grosses me out (despite the fact that they actually do taste pretty good).
 
When this finishes up you’ll be able to tick it off your bucket list.

I’m wondering if you could add a “plate” to the bottom of a bucket and fly it like a spool rocket.
 
It seems that the general consensus is that a bucket ring fin is the way to go. It would certainly offer quite a bit of drag to the tail to compensate for the high drag of the textured body. SpaceManMatt, maybe something more like grid fins between the body and bucket? That way, it gets plenty of drag, but not so much the bucket acts like a rigid parachute and rips itself off the rocket. As for recovery, I was thinking of making a tapered cylindrical parachute with a thin spring steel ring in the top (like what you find in those fabric collapsible frisbees) to hold the shape. Make it with red, white, and black ripstop, some careful stitching, and even the parachute is a KFC bucket. I wouldn't mind trying the idea of deploying glider wings like mbeels said above, but I don't have enough experience with glider rockets to trust myself with a scratch-built design to glide properly.

To solve the CP problem, a canted cluster of motors up at the top would work... You could be dragging that bucket o' chicken finger kicking (and screaming...) good!

I anticipate having the motor tube run all the way up to maybe six or eight inches behind the nose, so ejection volume shouldn't be an issue. As for the CP being affected by the texture, I think a bucket ring fin and plenty of nose weight would do the trick. With higher-end F and G motors in this thing, it'll have plenty of oomph to get it off the ground even if it weighs quite a bit and altitude is sacrificed. Maybe I could even make it a cluster.

That would be cool! Finish the upper portion of the rocket like smooth raw chicken skin. Midway use tan stone finish spray paint to get an Original Recipe look. At the bottom glob on some paper mache to get an EXTRA CRISPY finish! Could even use some clear coat to get a nice "sheen on that chicken " look which is a must below the Mason Dixon line. The additional drag from the Extra Crispy finish will help drag down the CP and tractor motors will solve all yer CG issues. You will have the most stable rocket at the launch and a great flight if all three or more cluster motors light. E12 4 would be nice with Q2G2's and a good clip whip. Just got to keep the RSO from getting too extra crispy upon first sighting:)
 
I am actually contemplating using a rubber chicken for the nose. All it would need is a tube or dowel running through the neck to keep it from folding right at liftoff.

If you turn the squeaker around, you might convince it to squawk when the ejection event occurs.
 
Or better yet, incorporate the squeaker into the bucket ring fin so it has one long squawk all the way up. I'd just have to get a good air scoop leading into the squeaker to actually get it to work because I don't imagine this thing flying very fast.
