+1 for In the Shadow of the Moon. A truly beautiful film that's like having the Apollo astronauts round for dinner. Michael Collins's line in humour and John Young's deadpan modesty were particularly memorable highlights for me.

I like a lot of the films mentioned, but I really liked this one ...the personal reflections, the really nice Phil Sheppard soundtrack.... and especially this ending:


Also liked the redo of Solaris.
That said...even with all the great films that have come out since then, I have to say the most impressive space film experience I had was spring of 1968 when my dad drove my brother and me to the Uptown in Washington DC for the premier of 2001, in Cinerama. It was like a realization of all the great space flights we had only been able to see in Life magazine and TV , leading up to Apollo 8 that December...and the landing the next summer. Incredible exciting times those days. And Kubrick elevated the state of the art.

In thinking about this list, I was reminded of Ice Pirates, which I saw as a kid, but couldn’t remember a single thing about the plot. I just went into a wiki wormhole and ended up in the Qing dynasty. Don’t ask me how.

Sunshine is a great movie until the last 3rd when it turns into a monster movie. But definitely an overlooked one.

Agreed. The turn at the end is jarring and is definitely a weakness I tend to overlook. Everything up to that point of the movie is so good.

I actually liked Passengers for what it was... if you don't go into it expecting it to be hard sci fi, then it works ok as a "drama/romance/action movie set in space"

Agree about the graphics, but some of the sound effects are so good they send a shiver up my spine whenever I hear it.

Several of my friends and neighbors went to see Gravity on my advice and were disappointed...one in particular, (a self appointed film critic). I went to see it four times in 3D...yeah, the plot was kinda weak and there are scientific inaccuracies, but in 3D with the sound.....it was like a E ticket ride at Disneyworld.....and I loved it each time.

I enjoyed Passengers very much, just not in my top few. I saw it in 3D IMAX. Like MaxQ said, An E ticket ride.

I'm looking forward to Ad Astra.

Gattaca (though this barely fits in as a "Space Movie")

Gattaca was great. FYI, the title comes from using combinations of the nitrogen bases that code our DNA (A,C,G,T).

There have been some great space movies over the years, many quoted in the above posts. One standout for me is 2001: A Space Odyssey. Amazing forethought about how space would be handled in the future. It was released in 1968, before we had even landed on the moon. Amazing. FYI, the displays that look like flat-panel LCD units (like monitors we have nowadays) were not available back then. For the movie they made a back-projection screen and projected images from underneath to create the visual effects. Very prescient. I revisited this recently, after only seeing it originally back in about 1974. I appreciate it more now.

Fun fact: there were two different books by Martin Caidin. The first one had Pruett marooned alone in a Mercury flight (he was rescued), the second was (I think) written after, and adapted from, the movie (Pruett died attempting to fix the SM engine). I've got both books. Check eBay, look for the book with an outline of Mercury capsule.

It would be too hard to list all of my favorites. Most have already been mentioned, but 2001 and Forbidden Planet are particular favorites.

A few I haven't seen mentioned (Sorry if there are repeats):

"Robinson Crusoe on Mars". Technicolor classic!
"Outland" with Sean Connery. Kind of a down and dirty western set on Jupiter's moon Io.
"Flash" with Sam J. Jones and Max von Sydow. Soundtrack by Queen. Good fun!
"Cowboys and Aliens" I thought this one was a joke when I first heard about it, but it was actually pretty good.
"Super 8" Not one of Spielberg's epics, but I liked it.

I am also a sucker for any of the old George Pal style 50s era flicks; "When Worlds Collide", "Conquest of Space", "Destination Moon", "Rocketship XM", etc. All classics, and all staples of the Saturday afternoon monster/sci fi movies we watched on the low rent channel when I was a kid.

For unintentional humor it is tough to beat "First Spaceship to Venus". Polish/East German (Yes kids, there used to be two Germanys), late 50s or early 60s - Kraft has never made anything that cheesey...
