Since all I've got are free flight gliders I avoid windy days (anything over single-digit) like the plague. I've lost too many to the breezes and trees. :(
 
One of the advantages of the radio control gliders is that you can control where the model comes down (somewhat).

Yep, the Federation even put in an appearance too! Great flights today Frank, regretfully I didn't get to watch too many as it was pretty busy, but the ones I did see were spot on.
 
I would have liked to have flown more but I was just too crapped out, I got up at 4:30 and drove 8 hours round trip to fly rockets for 4 hours and that was it....
 
I crashed mine Saturday. This is the second time I've gotten myself confused and launched it in glide mode and had it come over our heads on its back and headed for the ground. This time it was abetted by an apparently not-as-clean-as-I-thought-it-was rail so I didn't manage to recover as i did the first time I did this. It hit the ground under power....but I think it will not be too hard to fix if I can straighten the front three or four inches of the body tube enough. But that will have to wait until after NARAM. Road trip starts Tuesday.

Yes, I have done that with another rocket glider.

To review, my Dynasoar rocket gliders have tended to need a little elevator down trim at launch. For gliding, you need elevator up trim to maintain glide (or, you can just hold back on the control stick).

If you launch in elevator GLIDE mode, the rocket glider makes a rapid half circle. Lands about 30 yards BEHIND you, in "Lawn Dart" mode. :eek::(:oops:

I must admit, I now have mad respect for the free flight rocket glider guys.

Transmitter: The new DX6 has what you need, elevon mixing, flap switch for glide trim. These models require mixing of the aileron/elevator channels to provide control. Simple 2-5 channel radios usually do not provide this feature. You also need to be able to put in trim for glide, you can do this manually with the trim tab but you will need to set and re-set this each flight. The 6 channel radios and higher usually include both the mixing feature and the ability to program up trim on the flap switch which allows easy setting/resetting of the trim position on a switch. I've had one person use a DXe but it cannot do the elevator trim on a switch and it is very awkward to try to boost/glide this way putting in trim each time manually unless you are an expert pilot. If you are asking this question, I'm assuming you do not have much or any RC flight experience, you cannot learn on one of these and need some stick time on a moderate speed aileron plane before you should try it. Some users have played with Orange transmitters which are cheap but they had trouble getting them to work correctly so I can't recommend them. I have not used any of the frsky transmitters.

Without looking at all the specs it probably has all the features you need, just look at the manual and see if it has flap/elevator trip function and elevon mix(that should be there). My kits come with an adapter wire for a 1s battery with red jst and that will run a spektrum receiver and two servos.

I looked at the ia8 receiver, it is heavy at 18 grams as opposed to 7 grams for an AR-410 but this model should carry that no problem, but it also says 4-6.5v so it won't work with a 1s battery meaning you need a bec(another 7 grams maybe) and a 2s battery

A few years on, and my Klingon D7 is still serving the Klingon Empire.

I recently flew at the Mid-South Rocket Society in Memphis, TN. The crowd loved it!

Here is a flight at the Kennett RC Field in Kennett, MO. Good flight, but I made a bad landing choice. I decided to "go around again", but that was the wrong choice. However, I made a good landing. No damage.

 
At one time I decided to add a rudder servo. But this was an elevon set up problem.

The rudder servo has been removed, and the model flies great.
