Hey me too!

Binder Design is doing outstanding work on this.

I told Mike in the beginning to take his time and do it right... and he is. The thing isn't a small project that's for sure. And from Binder's updates he is putting a lot of effort into this.

We expect to see the fin can at about the same time you produce one of the most awesome launch trailers in the country... the middle of June!

Thanks Levi. I really appreciate your efforts for this rocket launch.

Cool. I’m starting work on the trailer in the morning. I picked up some materials today that I didn’t already have. Some 1 7/8 roundstock for the pivot point of the tower. Also some parts for the outriggers. I’ll send you some pictures as it comes together

When are you expecting that fin can. I’m anxious to see it

It's up to you Levi but if you want to post the progress here that'd be informative for a lot of us!

I'd venture that most of us have never seen a launch trailer being made from the beginning.

Your decision of course! Posting on here opens you up for attaboys and critiques but that's not a bad thing.

Levi,

Think about some removable, protective "wheel pants" to protect the tires, so Chuck doesn't have to pull them off and put them back on.

"You, sir, are a steely-eyed, missile man" !

Perhaps hes also interested in the final fin unit dimensions so he can prevent any interference with the trailer mechanism?

If approved just covering the tires with a welding blanket during launch would make things easy.

We’ve got a small generator, compressor and an impact wrench to do the tires if needed.

Chuck,

Considering the "friction" that occurred, early on, with this project, I suggest getting all approvals in writing, just in case someone "forgets", later . . . I would also post them here, in this forum, for all to see, creating a "Public Record" !

An "ounce of prevention" . . . Helps to cure a case of the " I never said's" !

Got your back . . .

Not necessary Dave. All is good in the rocketry world.

I’ve been working with the good folks at KloudBusters and Tripoli Gerlach. They are very professional in their approach to these bigger projects.

Nothing needs to be in writing.

Take care.

I’ve made some small progress this afternoon cutting and tacking up some of the main pieces for the “chassis” of this beast. The pivot point will be on the uprights of these parts where the diagonal run intersects.

I found this one 7000 lb. axles * 14,000 lb GVWR
https://www.odomtrailer.com/odom_bumper_pull

JBR,

I think Chuck got the next one up from that model . . . 20ft length, rather than 16ft, same 14,000 lb rating.

Levi,

Incredible work, sir 1

Several posts back, I asked Chuck about the "wooden deck" in the trailer. I suggested that he think about, possibly, replacing the wood with "diamond mesh", for fire protection and easy cleanup . . .

What are your thoughts about wood currently being used on the trailer ?

Thanks,

Dave F.

It’s the 14k rated trailer not 15k (my mistake). Yes 7k axles.

It’s 18 ft long which is plenty. The S rocket may have to be hauled in halves unless we keep it under 22 ft.

Levi and I did discuss the diamond plate when I dropped it off.

Thanks guys!

Chuck,

I was suggesting "diamond mesh", not "diamond plate" for the deck surface of the trailer . . .

I’m not really sure what to think. The rocket will sit 18” off the trailer when upright. The heat will only be there momentarily. I’m really not certain if there will be a problem.

Levi,
Over the years we have seen a dozen or so different trailer mounted launch pads come through the Rocket Pasture. Many had wooden decks (and rubber tires). As long as the pad design hangs the rocket off the end of the trailer, there hasn’t been any noticeable damage to the trailer itself.
Our club just built a new launch trailer for LDRS. The trailer itself was an old boat trailer that a couple of our club members added everything to. We did add diamond mesh to the new deck area only because as a boat trailer there was nothing there. We are not doing anything special for the tires and have no concerns that they will be damaged during a nominal launch.

Levi,

I predict that the wood will be set on fire and, likely, punched completely through when the motor lights.

This is a "Q" motor . . . Chuck's is an "R" motor, much bigger, with an "S" motor following it !

You're going to need a "blast deflector" to protect the deck ( fire ) and sides of the trailer ( damage to the paint, wiring, brake lights, etc ).

I am envisioning a "Chute"-shaped design that would contain the flame and exhaust and direct everything aft, beyond the end of the trailer . . . Maybe something like this ( concept only ), 18" - 24" wide, length as required, with a "U-shaped bend". ( "Concept" in images below ).

Side Panels . . .

This thread really shows the basic concept well . . . https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=36733.40

If I have to, I'll build a cardboard model to illustrate clearer.

Thanks, Levi !
