I thought it might be nice to know who the Canadian members are and where everyone is from!

I'll start us off!

My name is Tyler. I started in rocketry as a youngster and then got away from it for many years. I got the bug again a few years back and now I'm aiming for my L1.

I'm in the Ottawa area and fly mostly south of the city with low and mid-power rockets. I plan to join Tripoli and the Ottawa Rocketry Group in the new year and continue moving towards L1.

I'd also like to travel south to a big launch like New York Power at least once next season.

I'm having a tonne of fun learning new things as I move forward to higher power stuff.

Who else do we have here from the Great White North?
 
I'm Bruce, playing with rockets in Southern Alberta. I have enjoyed rocketry as a young boy, as a teen, a young adult, and whatever other category I fit now :)

I enjoy models, mid power and high power, with no particular affiliation for scale/sport/anything else. I enjoy building, flying, hanging out with like minded people, photography/video with rockets, and everything about the hobby, except digging core samples out of the ground...

I'm fortunate to live close to Rock Lake and Sullivan Lake High power launches. I was also fortunate enough to attend an LDRS in Potter New York, a launch in Virginia, a launch on the Bonnyville Salt Flats, and a one day launch with Kloudbusters in Kansas on a road trip I did years ago. My goal is to someday hit up a couple of those large launches in the states.

Now I've added a goal of trying to recruit some more members!
 
Hello! Dave here. I'm in BC, on the island. Flew in the 1970's in Alberta and got back into it after I found my parents had actually saved (and moved) much of my rocket stuff. I flew lots of competitions in the 70's and early 80's and recently attended NARAM 60 where i discovered I no longer have the "right stuff". But had fun anyway. National Sport Launch is in California in 2019, and that looks like it would be fun to attend.

Not a lot of places to fly around here, so I'm looking for any like-minded people on Vancouver Island, especially if they have a field to fly in. It is no fun to put in hours building something , only to go to a lonely field and fly by yourself. I used to fly with my son, be he is now 19 with a girlfriend, so you know the drill.

I hope to build and fly a Saturn V for the upcoming 50th anniversary. Have a Peter Alway model in the build pile, and looking for an Estes model 50th anniversary re-issue soon.
 
I have been meaning to come to Rock Lake for years now. Flying to Lethbridge would mean I can't really bring anything to fly. Driving is a 1300 km trip. Of course to National Sport Launch in California would be 2100km so there ya go!
 
I'm Paul, and my addiction started many many years ago.. I don't seem to need help, but I do tend to get others hooked.. I'll also share opinions & advice..

I'm in Montreal, QC, (hence the 'land of poutine'). But it's easier for me to fly in the US. I cross the border into Vermont to fly (And fly every month with a 12k' limit!)

I've done a few of the central NY launches, such as NYPower, and have done both NSL 2018 & LDRS 34 (? - Potter a few years ago)

I'm NAR L2 and I LCO when asked. And no, no immediate L3 plans..
 
Michael here, I am also a kid of the late 60s and grew up dreaming of being an Astronaut. I think by the time I was 8 I knew what an F1 and J2 engine was. I dabbled in the hobby in the late 70s flying my giant 3 rocket Estes fleet on As, Bs and Cs and boy was a C a big motor back then. However I got out of the hobby after a couple of summers once I decided that I liked girls more.

Fast forward to my my 30s when a friend asked me if I wanted to go fly a rocket with him and his kids and my interest was peaked again. However I did not have kids at the time and it was also a busy time of my work life. Being the late bloomer that I am I had twins in 2009 and one day in early 2013, when I was thinking of things to do with the kids, I made the mistake of hitting YouTube. Wow those 13 year old kids are now in their 50s and flying 1/10th scale Saturn V rockets, I was hooked and have been since.

I live right in the heart of TO and I belong to 4 clubs, two local, NAPAS and CRC, as well as two in Upstate NY, URRG and MARS. I attend a half dozen HP launches a year in the US and fly the small stuff locally with the kids at CRC.

I am Tripoli L2 and will likely go after my L3 in 2020. Its about the journey not the destination for me.

I started up again with rockets 4 years ago with my kids. Since then I keep building bigger and bigger ones. Though I find 2-3" rockets flying on Aerotech 29/40-120 is kind of the sweet spot for flying.

I am a member of NAR, L2 and the closest club I fly with is a 2hr drive across the border in Michigan. I do most of my flying at regional launches, NYPower, URRF, Midwest Power and Midwest Blast this year and probably next year as well.

I build plenty of Estes LPR rockets but I really like the challenge of HPR stuff. This year I've been working on a 2 stage HPR which I think I finally got worked out a couple of weeks ago at Midwest Power. I just ordered the Madcow 5.5" Nike->Tomahawk and that'll be my next big project. I've got a cluster/airstart HPR on the go as well.

Shout out to Pavel at allrockets.ca who has a great selection and faster shipping than Amazon, I'm close enough that my order usually gets to me less than 24hrs after I order it!

I love allrockets.ca. My stuff almost always arrives next day. Prices are good, too! Pavel has also been super helpful!

I'm really hoping to hit NYP next season. Sounds like there might be a Hoser invasion!
 
Hi everyone. Built rockets as a kid and just got back into it a couple years ago with my kids. Were in the Surrey area of BC. Really enjoy building them as much as flying them. Would like to get into high power in the near future.
 
Hey ManiakMechanik; I"m on the Island, and am always looking for places to launch. Also looking into mid/high power, but may have to drive to Lethbridge to get certified even at Level 1.

Hi Hutch. Me too, always looking for a good launch site. I have one spot I've been using for just over a year and only lost one in the trees so far. Was thinking the same about high power, probably Alberta.
 
Hey all

As with Hutch I flew in the 70's in Alberta as a kid (Dave, I remember you, stayed at your place in Calgary for a SAM launch?) . Got back into rocketry in 1994 or so when I was getting the kids exposed to it and found this magazine called "High Power Rocketry" , I think I left the kids in the store... I do and have done various roles within CAR/ACF, TRA and the local Calgary Rocketry Club.

My background is electronics so I dabble building things, altimeters, timers, RF links, gps systems and the like. Currently working on a very cool team project for next June for RocLake in Lethbridge, Kronos Pente and if you translate Greek to English it comes out as Saturn V. Yup dreamed about the space program waay back and I guess still dreaming.

It is a struggle in getting launch fields and keeping them. We are lucky to have four sites in Alberta and looking at a fifth if we can get Transport Canada to move and approve it. Lots of logistics to getting a site. Basically you need to know someone who has land and willing to chat with the neighbors. We have only have one "cold call" site that we have access to. Some hints is to look at Nav Canada maps for the area you are in and look for sections that are not under airways, not under an Air Control Zones, and not near navigation beacons (which are part of airways). That gives you a place to start looking, maybe. For those that start this process it requires time and travel. This is for HPR launches, models have a much easier time but you local city bylaws may hamper your way now.

Hello, Garret here.
I live in the interior of BC in Kamloops. Lots of fields to fly on around here and super open (but covered in sagebrush) terrain. I haven't made any connections with local farmers to get permission, and the sagebrush is brutal for losing rockets unless you have trackers.
Doesn't seem like there are a lot of people into rocketry out this way unfortunately.
I'm also involved in the Makerspace in town, which is pretty awesome if you're into building your own designs... helloooooo laser cutter and 3D printer!

I started rocketry as a kid in the 70's and remember when we had Canaroc here in Edmonton, also remember how often their motors would cato :( I became a BAR many years ago when our kids were young and building and flying rockets with them. From that time on I moved up to mid-power then high-power. I belong to the Edmonton Rocketry Club, we host Fire & Ice our high power launch in February out at Viking Alberta. As David mentioned we are lucky to have 4 launch sites for HP that the clubs in Alberta host. This means we can go from freezing to cooking our butts off throughout the year ;)

It's great that you have that many hp launch sites!

Yes 3d printers are fun. Below are our display nozzles for the Saturn. Each nozzle was 26 hours on the printer and the 31 other pieces per nozzle took another 30+ hours.

Jason from Okotoks, Alberta. I fly with Calgary Rocketry.

My interest began when I was about 12 years old growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area. I can remember seeing model rockets in the a local toy store and decided to give it ask for a kit for Christmas. My parents got me the starter set which came with an Alpha III. They also got me an Estes Comet which was my first flight most likely on an A8-3. After I was 14 or 15 I dropped the hobby until I picked it back up when my oldest was 4. We started building rockets together and have been for the last five years. I'm still trying to figure out if she likes the rockets or just likes hanging out with her dad. Either seems to be ok.

I've made several trips out to Rock Lake and Sullivan Lake launches. This year I launched my 4" Madcow Little John on an H125 and a I195 to get my Level 1 & Level 2. My Level 3 attempt didn't succeed as my CTI J-357 CATOd and I destroyed Bruce Aleman's chute release in the process.
 
From Vancouver Island and have been flying in an abandon gravel quarry location for the past 4 years. It is a huge area that accommodates a G class motor without issue. No issues with Fire Dept or ByLaw people and community seems to be supportive. Airplane traffic is no issue - the odd helicopter.
