Went for my NAR L2 Certification over Labor Day weekend at SodBlaster in Pasco, WA and succeded! I had an absolute blast of a time and got to really know more of my fellow Eastern Washington rocketry friends. The L2 aside, the whole event was superbly run and organized and I will definitely be returning next year.

Now for fun details

Airframe: Madcow 4" Fiberglass AGM-58 w/54mm mmt and added Aeropack tailcone retainer.
Recovery: Harness from Ted at OneBadHawk, Parachutes from PML
Motor: Aerotech DMS K535 White Lightning, With 14 sec delay as a drogue backup charge
Altimeter: Perfectflight Stratologger CF
Simmed Alt: 4465'

Flight summaries:
Attempt #1: Good ascent and drogue deployment, Main failed to deploy due to loose wiring. Airframe impacted ground (thank god it was in some soft dirt) going about 78 ft/s according to the simulations. No damage to fins or body tube was observed and the altimeter was beeping away when I found it so I decided to give to give it another shot.

Attempt #2: Great ascent and drogue deployment, Main decided to come out at apogee so I had to walk a little farther, but at least this time it was safer. Waiting to pull the rest of the flight data off the altimeter until I have the time to sit down and learn how PerfectFlite displays data via their data transfer cable.

The overall philosophy with the build was to overbuild the heck out of it so that it could be as versatile as possible and take me through most the L2 motor spectrum. This meant foaming the fin can and part of the nosecone and as it turns out that meant it's also great at absorbing impact.

I can't wait for all the fun possibilities in L2, but it looks like this poor college student has no choice but to wait 'till schools over (Woooo! one more year!). As Rich said at Sodblaster after my second attempt, "Welcome to L2, time to get your wallet out!"

More pics to come...

Order up an L-2 motor in celebration and fly it again!

Awesome. Nice rocket, nice boost pics.
I for sure need to get me one of them, pad minion that is. Lol

Congrats! The soft ground due to the plowed circle saved several rockets. I'm glad that you didn't give up and made it the second time! Well done. See you out at the Sod Farm.

Congrats, David! It was great seeing you there. I promise to get the video up as soon as I can.

congrats on the cert flight! I may have been the one that told the LCO that is was not a certification attempt, it was a cert flight... (I know I did that on a few certs flights)

There were even a few strays from the western side that made it there... :) It was a great event!

That's awesome. Congrats on the L2!
I plan to fly my AGM-58 for the first time tomorrow on a CTI K520 White.

Get a video of this. I plan to fly my Tyrannosaur on a CTI K520 or K600 tomorrow myself. My first K! Going for a mile.

Congrats as well on the cert! I got a great shot of the launch on Sunday....

Now, like Rich said, say good bye to your wallet! I’m afraid to think of how much my 10 flights that weekend cost me!

Kris, it is best just not to even think about such things... :) I did want to add that the photos you took at the launch are great!

It's been a while since I've had time to come back to TRF, but I wanted to add on to this thread a video of the successful launch. The launch is at ~36:01

Big thanks to Ryan for editing all of our flights from that weekend!

Not sure how I missed this thread, but definitely congratulations David, hopefully we will be seeing you again. Our 3 day event is coming up in June and of course SodBlaster II Labor Day Weekend again.

Thanks, Rich! I absolutely plan on coming out for Sodblaster! I've got a few post-graduation plans that unfortunately conflict with both FITS and the TCR June launch, but I'll definitely be there in spirit.
