Why so many diabetics?

I just feel we are chasing our tails round in circles till the next redistribution of the food pyramid is shuffled once more. We swear on what's the 'in' thing today only to vehemently reject those 'silly notions' as "what were we even thinking about!" in a decade.

Across all eras, the only thing that provably works is eating fewer calories. A body can fine tune it with type of calories, micronutrients, HIIT, intermittent fasting, whatever.... but consuming less leads to weighing less. This note is also addressed to me :)

True, you have to create a calorie deficit to lose weight. To keep it off, you have to maintain healthy habits.

The healthy habits are what get you to lose the weight. The problem is people drift back to old habits.

I had quit smoking, drinking and drugs back in '90 and haven't looked back since. Eating smarter, and staying away from all fast food garbage was easy in comparison. We enjoy the menus we cook though we still include beef, pork, fish and other proteins. We will not go vegan yet we enjoy vegetables very much. I just made a very colorful Greek salad along with scallops tonight. Over the top.

One thing I don't think was posted here is no eating at night before bed. You'll certainly burn no calories this way laying inert.

Actually, metabolic studies have shown that you burn more calories laying flat sleeping in a bed than you do sitting at your desk at work or watching TV. So get more sleep!

And when you sleep, you are not awake continuously eating/snacking.

Pork is not as bad as bacon, as long as you are not Muslim.

Just make sure you cut out the fat. Should consider being a vegetarian, but take supplements to compensate.
Actually this (cut the fat) is the exact opposite of what I consider good advice.

Obviously important to watch overall calorie count and eat balanced diet. But within that, a higher proportion of fat helps shut down appetite and is better from glycemic perspective.

In other words a 200 calorie snack of cheese is better than a 200 calorie snack of bread.

I've read the opposite, at best it's still controversial: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/eating-before-bed. Once again this is about what the current trend says. It will more than likely change with time.

I did not say anything about eating before bed. I am referring to calorimetric testing of sitting vs sleeping.

This is absolutely correct and the AHA is still preaching to cut the fat despite 50 years of studies that lack and scientific support for low-fat lifestyles.

My statement was about eating before bed to which you replied one burns more calories sleeping. I then supplied a link to the controversial subject.

I know NOT eating anything after supper (5-6pm) helped me get back to a healthy weight. Went from 205 to 175 without really doing anything more. Smaller portions also helps too but at least now I can bend over without grunting like a cave man!

Look above. My response was not to your response. My response was to Shred.

No eating after 6 is a form of fasting- Fasting creates a caloric deficit and as long as you have a deficit you will lose weight. Some are unable to fast for 16 hours a day so fasting on a 16:8 schedule is not a good diet for them.

marc:

Fat is a direct cause of heart disease. All dairy foods are bad due to this, and excessive animal fat, especially red meat and processed meats.

Hardening of the arteries. Hardening of the arteries, also called atherosclerosis, occurs when fat, cholesterol, and other substances build up in the walls of arteries. These deposits are called plaques. Over time, these plaques can narrow or completely block the arteries and cause problems throughout the body.

I stopped eating cheese, use low fat milk, and only egg whites.

Lipitor and any statins make me dizzy and feel like in another dimension, I told my doc to stop the cholesterol game (endless blood tests and funny pills), that I will clean up diet. Eat more veg, fruit, and grain (flax seed meal), and try to control the meat dept.

Note that asians that eat mostly fish and vegs do not get heart disease. But cancer eventually gets them. Take your pick. Heart failure or the big C.

There's a lot of conflicting research, but in the context of a generally healthy diet, eating a bit of fat is beneficial compared to the same amount of calories worth of carbs. Keep in mind eating the fat also shuts down appetite, whereas eating a similar amount of sugar/bread does not result in satiety.

More broadly, moving to a protein/fat diet from a carb heavy one tends to bring down serum cholesterol sharply. When I did the Atkins diet back in the late '90s, my cholesterol dropped from ~250 prior to the change to the upper 180s once I reached a stable point.

In my more recent life, I was struggling with weight a bit again, largely due to bad habits involving carbs. Total cholesterol around 230. Shifted to reduce carbs / increase fat resulted in satiety, weight loss, and now I'm in the 190s for total cholesterol. These are typical results.

Too much of anything is bad, and eating excess fat beyond a healthy calorie load certainly is bad. I'm working to balance things. Sounds like you are working toward the same healthy balance concept. Just keep in mind that we're not exactly "what we eat" but rather we are what our body processes what we eat into. Carbs turn into fat. Excess fat turns into fat. But just eating some fat doesn't mean it becomes fat. :) If we keep the carbs relatively low, the fat is burned as fuel. Eating too much % carbs turns off the fat metabolism.

Like you, I'm not on statins. I've discussed it with my doctor due to a family history of high cholesterol, and I flirt with moderately troublesome cholesterol numbers when I'm not being particularly good about what I eat, but my doctor told me that overall I'm doing fine, am mindful about my habits, and don't need the pills...

Sure you need some fat, sounds like you have it under control.
Watch the sugar, it turns into fat. A glass of OJ has 8 teaspoons of it, same as a coke. That kale looks like eating seaweed. I'll pass. I do eat organic dark green spring mix lettuce in daily salad, avacado, tomato, bits of turkey, Skinney Girl vinagret, does not have all the weird lumpy debris that clogs the nozzle on others. Carry on.

Here's some MIS-titled info from yesterday I found today:

New study finds that fat consumption is the only cause of weight gain
13 Jul 2018

https://medicalxpress.com/news/2018-07-fat-consumption-weight-gain.html

"These effects of dietary fat seemed to be because uniquely fat in the diet stimulated the reward centres in the brain, stimulating greater intake."

You can see the title does NOT represent what the study said as reflected in that one sentence excerpt. A human being, unlike a mouse, can resist the urge for greater intake which is a part of successful caloric reduction anyway.

WHY are titles important? Note that the following also leads to an incredibly easy to propagandize populace:

6 in 10 [actually 5.9 out of 10 - W] of you will share this link without reading it, a new, depressing study says
16 Jun 2016

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ng-it-according-to-a-new-and-depressing-study

On June 4, the satirical news site the Science Post published a block of “lorem ipsum” [placeholder - W] text under a frightening headline: “Study: 70% of Facebook users only read the headline of science stories before commenting.”

Nearly 46,000 people shared the post, some of them quite earnestly — an inadvertent example, perhaps, of life imitating comedy.

Now, as if it needed further proof, the satirical headline’s been validated once again: According to a new study by computer scientists at Columbia University and the French National Institute, 59 percent of links shared on social media have never actually been clicked: In other words, most people appear to retweet news without ever reading it.

Worse, the study finds that these sort of blind peer-to-peer shares are really important in determining what news gets circulated and what just fades off the public radar. So your thoughtless retweets, and those of your friends, are actually shaping our shared political and cultural agendas.

May I refer all of you to the book, "Eat To Live" by Dr. Joel Furman? In it he explains why diets DON'T work. It is not how much you eat, but what you eat. 1 pound of salad greens has 100 calories but has a large amount of nutrients.

May I refer you to what's trending today is tomorrow's worn out door mat. Nutritional info is STILL at odds when agreeing with one another.

So rats cannot control fat intake, but people can. Ha.

https://www.healthdata.org/news-rel...ght-or-obese-and-weight-growing-problem-among

The vast majority of American adults are overweight or obese, and weight is a growing problem among US children

An estimated 160 million Americans are either obese or overweight. Nearly three-quarters of American men and more than 60% of women are obese or overweight. These are also major challenges for America’s children – nearly 30% of boys and girls under age 20 are either obese or overweight, up from 19% in 1980.fat.jpg

I am six foot one, 185 LBS. Under FAT CONTROL diet.

Gimme another Big Mac with extra bacon and cheese, and supersize the sugar bomb pop and fries.
