Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away, and that in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty.
Martin Luther King, Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail

He was the right man at the right time, and dedicated to peace and nonviolence.

I know most people are familiar with the "I Have a Dream" speech, but if you have not read the entire Letter from the Birmingham Jail you should.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."

A great American who sacrificed everything to bring the rights guaranteed in our Constitution to ALL Americans. I wonder what he would have thought of America 8 years ago, and I wonder what he would have thought today. We've come a long way and still have a long way to go --- two steps forward, one step back.

What do the black panthers have to do with positively remembering MLK Jr? Between this and the Kaepernick discussions are we giving the green light to political discussion? I have some prime rants about some of our homophobic vendors queued up.

MLK was a great man and in spite of the current troubles, his legacy will live on.

Harriet Tubman replaces Andrew Jackson on our $20 bill. Replacing a slave owner with an abolitionist...That's progress.

She was a gun toting Republican.

Amen to that.

PLEASE keep this as a positive thread, not devolve into political or other TRF rule-breaking rants.

I assume you all are referring to my post. I have edited it. Thanks for keeping me in line.

A reminder to us all: this man wasn't just fighting racism, but also poverty and militarism.

We've come a long way thanks in no small part to his example, but there's still plenty to do.

With most if not nearly all assasinations, there's a political or deep seeded underlying reason....but with Dr. King, it was just so senselessly tragic. It just didn't make any sense why someone would kill such a gentle, positive voice of the people. Dr. King was not just about the Civil Rights movement and the Jim Crow establishment of the south....there was so much more to his message about all peoples living on this planet, and living together equally and tolerant. His death was a very sad loss for the human race.
