So- Would the lifeguards use a handwriiten sign or a siren to warn of unsafe surfing conditions?? Technology is a matter of degrees. Let's assume the surfers are NOt wearing Apple watches to get the alert. maybe they just looked up. Would they know what they are seeing and translate that to a danger? My point is technology is also a matter of perception. "any significantly advanced technology...etc." GMO's, creating completely new chemicals never seen before that never bio-degrade, newer,faster ways to subvert resources for short term profits- the list goes on. As Ted says, it depends on who is driving. And why they want to get where they are going. By the way- I bet those fish were impressed-for a nanosecond...

If you have not seen these, watch "the Day the earth stood still" 2008 with Keanu Reeves, and the 2009 film "Watchmen". Lastly watch the recent film"Before the Flood by Leonardo DiCaprio. They make it quite dificult to escape the reality. Sure, may not be exactly on point, but rest assured not to far off the mark!

I kind of have a personal connection with the Operation Crossroads test since I work (doing the environmental cleanup) at the site where the plutonium was made and processed. Its amazing the technology we developed in just a few years time...

The technology of the 1910's through the 50's could save us, but the skilled Craftsmen are missing from that picture, and plastic is meant to deteriorate, so until we start having real tools and real aspirations to design build stuff out of IRON, we are lost.
I'm out in the sticks, surrounding myself with lots of tools and Iron, so the whole rest of the world can do what it is eventually going to do, and I'll still get by by making stuff out of other stuff with stuff that was build to last for generations.

Utopia can't exist (at least not for long) due to human nature.

It is human nature to want more and want better...that is why we're the top species on Earth and why Communism doesn't quite work (it may exist, but with lots of corruption and heads leading like dictators sitting on large wealth).

We also like competition...this is why sports are so popular. If everyone won, why bother?

Also there are darker elements...those who just find fun in evil or chaos. Others that are lazy and don't want to do anything unless they have to. Also people of different personalities often just can't get along together (just check out some heated TRF posts!). I once lead a rafting trip where one person (a VP at a bank) refused to paddle since he felt one of the others wasn't paddling hard enough.

That aside, I think tech is marvelous and is already saving us. In most of our hands we hold a small computer much like what people used to dream of 50 years ago. With it we can look up almost any information...how do you start a fire with sticks? How do I improve my blood sugar? How do you perform CPR? What is this funny mole? Yes, it can save us, but also hurt us...that is the nature of the beast.

My mom took us to see that when I was a kid. Terrific film and a genuine classic. The 2008 version pales in comparison even with the advances in special effects.

The 2008 version of "Day the Earth Stood Still" was a disgrace to the intent and spirit of the excellent original movie. The original was the smartest SciFi movie in decades, IIRC only 2001 a Space Odyssey topped it in 1968 (OK, Forbidden Planet was pretty nice but IMHO Day the Earth Stood Still was smarter).

The original movie prevented anyone from dying when the Earth Stood Still, planes did not fall out of the sky, hospital operating rooms stayed powered. IIRC only two humans died in that and those were two army guards who were about to shoot the robot Gort, after Klaatu was shot and killed by the army and Gort self-activated to go get his body.

In the horrible 2008 steaming mess, Gort becomes a huge monster thing that splits into thousands of parts that fly around like a whirlwind causing death and destruction of anything and anyone in its path (or at least that is what I recall).

I only saw that movie once, with a friend. We were both shocked at how horrible it was. Never saw it again, never will.

By "people on here" I assume you mean yourself? I find most of the young people who post on TRF to be bright and intelligent and I'm glad they are here instead of marching in the streets and displaying their ignorance.

On the contrary, I think there should be a minimum spellchecking, grammerchecking, openness of mindchecking, life not dominated by political and religious beliefs checking, etc.

As for arguing: Firstly, you didn't mind debating until you found out about my age, through with one can easily extrapolate that age is yet another trait you stereotype by, just like like "New York" or "East [side of the United States]" and "West". Therefore, it is not a poorly made or unsupported argument that you are trying to ban, but rather a restoration of ego and dominance by your own beliefs that you are trying to restore.

You posted a question, supplied you view on it. I also have a view on it which is why I posted a response. That's how forums work. If you had said "If you're not of the exact same belief and etcetera etcetera, then you would have an, albeit extremely poor, excuse for not wanting my reply. However, with your current prompt, you have no reason to be picky about who replies and what they say.

Besides, you said you don't want to argue. If you don't want to argue, grit your teeth and move on. I'm not forcing you to. If you want to argue but don't want to argue with someone you define as inferior through your own beliefs, I'm (not) sorry about your self inflicted crisis. If you can't handle these things you should be in a different forum.
