Hi- Rainy day here. I've started an Estes "Big Daddy" this AM. The first instructions are kind of ambiguous. I'm not sure where to mount the small ring in the motor tube. In one place it seems to indicate 3/16" from one end, in another it seems to say 1" from end. Anyone want to help?

I would leave the motor block and wire clip out entirely. This will allow a wider range of motors. Options to retain the motor are to but an Estes screw-on retainer, make one from a suitably sized plastic bottle, rig some sort of clip that screws onto the rear centering ring or just friction fit the motor with some masking tape. To keep the motor in place on boost, all you need are a few wraps of masking tape. If you use a screw-on retainer you will have to trim the tape thrust ring so the retainer will seat.

The 1" is the spacing from the top and where you put the glue. The 3/16 is the position you mark on the engine spacer tube (same size as an actual engine) that is used to push the block in from the bottom. Perfectly clear to me.

+1 leaving out the motor block and retaining hook, adding a thrust ring to any motor is easy with masking tape as Dick stated, and a couple of wraps of tape around the motor tube and motor after the motor is inserted will prevent it from blowing back out at ejection charge firing, and it allows you to fly some of the longer Cesaroni reloadable motors.

I saw a video of a BD flying on a J1055 and it was pretty amazing. I picked up a kit recently and am seriously considering pimping it out to 38mm. These little stubbys are just too much fun.

I wonder if that suffered from the Vmax delay snuffing. I figure 38mm would at least warrant fiberglassing everything.

3/16" is how much of the motor is supposed to protrude from the aft end of the motor tube. You make that mark on the yellow motor spacer. You put glue around the inside of the forward end of the motor tube, 1 inch in according to the instructions. Then you place the small (engine block) ring in the aft end of the motor tube and push it into place with the yellow spacer tube up to the 3/16 mark. At that point the small ring will have picked up the glue and ended out about a 1/4 inch or so further forward of that 1 inch point. Don't forget to remove the spacer. Hope that helps. :blush:

No need to rub it in. We haven't had rain in months here. We can't even launch. Statewide burn ban.

Good luck. Check into the nose cone mod for this one. Notorious for lawn darts due to the nose not fully ejecting. Lost my first one that way.

I was not aware of this, but it doesn't surprise me. We've had absolutely gorgeous weather along the coast for almost 6 weeks now, with only a trace of rainfall! I was hoping to do a LPR/MPR launch this next week off, but I guess I'll have to push it back a little further.
