Wasn't there talk a year or so ago of Aerotech offering more 18mm RMS choices? I know talk is just talk until it happens, but it sounded like Gary had made the decision to go ahead with it from the online conversations I read.

Anyone know what happened?

Thanks,
Don

Ask Gary.

If I had to take a guess, I would speculate that the CSFM problems have put a damper on Model Rocket sized RMS and LMS.

Is that an RMS version of the old Apogee six seconds of terror? (Spectacular, difficult to ignite, end burning altitude contest motor used at the 1994 NARAM at Houston.)

I know he has a D3 design. And I would like to see some Fast Jack :). And the return of the E27 :p

California State Fire Marshall...I think.

That generally seems to be the source of problems for our west coast people.

No. it is the California State Fire Marshal.

I have no idea what a Marshall is.

(The CSFM in their local office made a point of correcting the spelling when I spelled it incorrectly 15 or 20 years ago. They hate it when you add an "l". Just like adding "the" to Smokey Bear.)

AT posted OSFM approvals on thier website, so maby theres some confusion there.

The deal with california was posted on RP i belive.. where all Low power rocket motors could not be composite reloads.. i think they are working that side of things out.

I dont see why they would stop making new 18mm just becase 1 or 2 states throws a guff about relodable model rocket engines...

The OSFM issued a statement that all LPR reloads were "mistakenly" certified. Apparently, ANY reloadable motor is considered HPR in CA now.

The new 18mm reloads are probably waiting for the economy in general to pick up a bit. AT was talking about a LOT of cool stuff "coming soon" (including an "H" load for the 29mm hobbyline case using an improved Blue Thunder formulation), but has apparently slowed down a bit to see what happens before making the investment in production.

It isn't that they would "stop making them" but that development of plans into products requires time and money. The more time and money that are "distracted" by one project, the less is available to develop others.

That motor is still in testing last I heard, but this project is the same as the one that resulted in the G138T, which is an excellent motor.

The D3 RMS was static fired at NARAM-51. At the time Gary Rosenfield commented that there would be some design changes before it went into production.

The E27 (Along with the B6, C4 & C12 reloads) sold VERY poorly. For that reason they were discontinued.

I loaded up on esisting stock of 18mm reload kits with the CSFM classification of "Model Rocket Motor", so if you need any, I'll have them at the SCRA launches. I also got a bunch of 18mm and 24mm single use motors and newbies have been gobbling them up. They've been trying them out in Estes or Quest models and they actually get them back every time (after an awesome crowd-pleasing flight).

ValueRockets is indeed a way to recruit new consumers to mid-power.

unfortunately, i get squeeemish at the case price..
Not that i bauck its cost.. But that i know how many birds that size i would loose...
I think small mpwr and lpwr clubs would enjoy these things imensly!

BUt, i see the same thing.. estes Skywriter on a D24... and look at that, back in one piece... ( im just too lazy i think...)

I used to fly those all the time on the single use D21T. It was kind of a single use rocket. Never did get one back!:D

I occasionally stuff a D21 into an Estes Wizard or Quest Starhawk with similar results. Probably not a great idea, as I suspect it contributes to the "space junk" problem in low earth orbit....:D

I have no idea what a Marshall is.

It's one BAD vacuum tubed instrument amplifier. Will blow away the CSFMarshal away any day of the week.
Maybe we should hook up the power supply of the Marshall amp (500 volts) to the CSFMarshal and shock some sense into him!
Daniel

Does it go to "11" ?

I keep trying to remember not to add the extra L. Alas, all that's been achieved is that I now spell sherif with one F :D

Just like adding "the" to Smokey Bear.
FWIW, you can at least make a case for the "the" - it used to part of the name.

Doug

.

I've flown my Estes Big Bertha on the AT RMS D13-7W many times--awesome flights. The D13 rips it off the pad with an authority not seen much outside of HPR. And, I've gotten it back every time :).

"the" was never part of the name. It was added by a songwriter.

Bugs the Bunny. Porky the Pig. Roger the Rabbit. Big the Bird.

Then there's ATM Machine.....PIN Number.....

24mm Berthas do that too, if you stuff in an E15. I've yet to try an E28 (or an F)

On the subject of this thread, the 18mm RMS are a lot of fun. I'd love to try a D3 if it comes around. The D13s and D24s are great too. I love them in my Deuce (reinforce the fins if you do this...). I'm still looking for the pics of a D13 flight, but here's what it does on D24s:

[blink]Hey, where'd it go???

I remember Gary stating that the E27 would probably be the easiest to get back onto the Market.
With all the kits available now that were not back when it was first produced, I think it would sell well now.
I remember the discussion of this being hot & heavy for these new loads about a year ago and have heard nothing since.
Would really like the E27 back for the Mars Lander.

I would definitely use an E27 load!

I just got our 18mm hardware and my kid loves it.

Really banging performance and great to use for some of our 24mm birds.

this thread is making me want to go buy some 18mm loads... mabeyyy a rocket boat... :) that would be fun to watch...

I also just got an 18/20 motor. I got it from hobbylinc for $16.99.

Now to get some reloads for it and from what I've seen, Valuerockets has the best deal on them at $9.00 for a 3 pack of both the D13 and D24.

I too would welcome the D3, E27 and a Black Max load.

My real plans for this motor is to track down and build another Estes Venus Probe. That thing was too heavy for a C6-3 but I've heard it flies great on 18mm D's so I'd like to try it myself.;)

[blink]Hey, where'd it go???

That's the idea :D

I've never put any electronics in it or anything, but it sims at >60G off the pad, and around 30-40G throughout most of the burn. It gets pretty high too. I use an enormous streamer for recovery, since I don't think I'd ever get it back on the stock chute.

Here are a couple of pics of Deuces on D13s:

My first Deuce, built stock:

My reinforced (1 layer of 1/2oz glass, tip to tip) Deuce (this is the same one that's in the pics in the previous post on D24s - it's had perhaps 15 flights, of which probably 10 are on the AT 18mm reloads):
