Upscale Cherokee to 5.5" Loc tubing. This has several flights on it from J330 CTI to Aerotech K550. Looking to do a long burn L next year maybe. Plywood fins and Loc 5.5L nose cone. I've always loved this rocket from Estes.

Next downscale of another Old favorite flyer..the T4 (.448"dia) Cherokee 1/8A flys as good as it looks. I even use a 4" X-Form chute to recover this micro just to keep with the tradition started with my Old Estes standby:)

I really like clean looks of the Cherokee D, but I never have any luck keeping
one. It's downscale time again. I was trying to get some finishing practice in
on this rocket. All the grooves filled and sanded. The fins coated and sanded
multiple times to get rid of the grain. Carefully painting, watching the times
between the re-coats, matching paint types. And it still turned out bad.
Bleeding under the masking tape.:gavel:

Upscaling is alot of fun. Here are 2 I did recently. The Interceptor is a 3X upscale and is about 78 inches long. Flys on I and J motors The graphics were done by Stickershock 23. The Cherokee D is a 2X upscale and is 47 inches long. Flys on a G motor.

Completed a clone of the original Estes K-47 Cherokee-D with the shorter body tube. Thanks as always to Gordy (Sandman) for an awesome set of decals. This was my very first clone from scratch. It definitely won't be my last!

One issue I had was which side of which fins to put the "NASA" on. I could find no official Estes picture that showed them, so I just guessed. Oh well, I like it. In addition to Excelsior decals, the fins and nose cone are from SEMROC. All other parts came from one of my Designer Special parts assortments.

Thrustline was my Semroc before there was a Semroc. I did a shake-down build and review of the Cherokee D for John back in 2003.

Here's my just finished Cherokee-D.

It is not one of the Estes original versions nor is it the recent Semroc release.

Mine is the Thrustline Aerospace parts kit.

Decals by Excelsior Rocketry.

Thrustline Cherokee-D.jpg

After a year or so of sitting unfinished, I was able to complete another to my stable of childhood fleet. First and foremost I have to give credit to Mark at Stickershock for another superior quality decal wrap. Since the originals disintegrated upon contact with water.....maybe a blessing; these new, thinner vinyl decals are amazing. The rest of the kit original.View attachment 124650View attachment 124649View attachment 124651 The most recent completed is the "In-Flight" version Cherokee D. I don't know who produces the kits, but the quality is top shelf. To date, I have 2 of their offerings; Blue Bird Zero, and the pictured Cherokee. It's a shame they don't have a line a clone kits.

Here is my cloned Estes Cherokee-D (18" BT version).

My goal: Build a pretty one.

I had just finished placing the decals on rocket before taking the pictures.

Cherokee-D_Clone.jpg

Here a close-up of the fin unit:

Cherokee-D_Clone_Closeup.jpg

CG decal was placed at the actual point. CP was estimated.

I'll be flying her with 18mm engines only.

My latest build is a cross between the phantom and a Cherokee D (upscaled to BT-60, zipperless w/baffle)

Used a fluorescent light guard for the body tube, a payload section from an Estes Magician to create the engine mount. Much of the rest is spare parts from Estes or Semroc, except for the fins. I cut the fins out of 1/8" thick sheet acrylic stock that I had. Decals are photocopied from the Excelsior upscale decals for the Cherokee D, and were printed on clear, self adhesive stock from FedEX (Kinkos).

Hmm. I might have to copy you there. How close to actual scale are the PSII parts (Argent fins, 2.5" cone)?

This is a true upscale (or as close to one as I can do without a custom nosecone).

The fins were scaled up using scans of an original Cherokee D's fins. The Argent's fins are 4.875" at the root edge, the Cherokee D at this scale is 7.075" at the root.

I only used the Argent because it was what I had to use for parts (it was damaged). If I was intending to make this again, I'd just use a Partizon, as it has everything I need (save fins and decals). A true upscale of the Estes PNC-55AC comes out to be 10.378" (exposed), whereas the Partizon's nosecone is 9.813" (exposed).

Good to know. I think a 1/2" difference in cone length is tolerable at that scale, given that it would be a lot cheaper than having a custom cone turned. I suppose, then, that the Argent fins could be used for a smaller Cherokee upscale, but it wouldn't really fit a standard tube. They'd a little big for BT-60 or 2.64" tube, and too small for AT 1.9 tube. So, you're suggestion of basing it on the Partizon is probably the ticket for fairly easy super Cherokee.

Using the Partizon means that you don't have to buy a separate nosecone. An argent will give you more spare parts (transition, 2" OD body tube, and nosecone).

The Partizon also gives a lot more body tube than needed. Was there enough 2.5" tubing in the Argent to build the Cherokee, or did you have to add? I might actually favor using the Argent if it does, and using the remaining parts to build some form of 2" rocket as well, if I can come up with centering rings...

You'd need to add a body tube to an Argent based Cherokee D. The 2.5" body tube's standard length is 15.5". However, the long version of the Cherokee D (at this scale) needs 33.962" of tube which is more than the 31" made up by two standard tubes. The short version of the Cherokee D could barely be made with an Argent +nosecone (the body tube would be 30.902" long). Mind you, my Argent arrived damaged, so I needed to cut down the body tube anyway to get rid of the crumpled top edge.

Don't forget, I uploaded the .ork in my .ork files thread

Thanks. I've already modeled the short version in Rocksim upscaled to BT80. This would be a touch smaller, but more rugged, so it'll be easy enough to scale the model file. I think I like this version better than the 80-size that I was going to build once Semroc shows the BNC-80AC as available. Then I'll just get Mark to make the decals now that he's taking orders again...

OK, here's mine:

This is built from a Pro-Series II Argent as well. Decals from Stickershock, and red rail buttons from railbutton.com. Better pictures to come, and hopefully an opportunity to fly it before winter...

Ok... I wish I had one to build, but in lieu of that... I've been busy with OR...

Check this out...
