These scale kits are really slow sellers. It's been a couple years since we sold an Iris, and the fact that there are still NOS Exocets from the 90's still on a few dealer shelves proves that out.

PM me as to where I can score one.
 
Ok, here's my take (well, mostly) on the info I've gleaned from the instructions... Mind you it's just a guess as to the shapes of all the extra bits, and I did manage to forget the exhaust hoods... C'est la vie

I like the MM40 better than the MM38 anyway. The Block 3, sans motor canister would be one sharp looking rocket kit.

Now that I've had a chance to rest, and look over the MM40 Block 3, I agree that it's a sharp looking rocket (w/o motor canister). I still like the MM38 though.

I wonder how many 4" missiles I could make... hmmm... And what's another? Hmmm... Oh, yeah... I'm not married, I don't have kids, and I don't have pets (or a mortgage, car payments, alimony, palimony, or a massive debt...)
 
Now that I've had a chance to rest, and look over the MM40 Block 3, I agree that it's a sharp looking rocket (w/o motor canister).

If my 3D printer was done I'd be all over it. Anybody know where to get the dimensions or rocksim file for that one?
 
For $250 I'll kit you one with the original weighted fiberglass cone. The exact cone in the bottom photo.

I'm interested... I still need to get to China, so it'll be a while before I could jump on this offer.

Can I get any more info on the FG cone? "in the bottom photo" the image is too blurry to make out. I'm hoping that it doesn't look like Chris' Exocet's NC. That looks to be too short and almost conical. I like the lines of the drawing of the NC as seen throughout the instructions.

The tip is supposed to be (near) conical.

It is that cone. It is not quite right, that's why I decided not to continue this kit. At the time it would have been too expensive to have a new mold made. I can make my own molds now but the issue now is time. I prefer to spend my time breaking new ground rather than rehashing old stuff that was very slow to move.
 
Perhaps if enough interest is generated a correct cone could be generated for the MM40 Block 3 that could also go into the MM38? Or maybe I could find someone with a 3D printer to print up the preferred version that could then be used as a master for a FG nosecone. Still, I have to get to China before I can even dream of affording these.

In the meantime... Could someone find him a good dimensional drawing of the MM40... PLEASE!

Oh, I managed to print the massive original .pdf file, and then re-scan it into two new (smaller) .pdf files.

I second that. Any rocket with intake vents is cool in my book. I originally envisioned our Devastator kit with them. Similar to the original Orbital Sciences Coyote.
 
Think you'll be able to fly HPR in China?

Dunno, but interested in finding out. I do know that there are clubs in China. I saw evidence of this in a recent issue of NAR's Sport Rocketry magazine. Dunno if they are LPR/MPR/HPR though.

Flying them is really fun, but I LOVE building. What's more, I'd be a Hell of a lot closer to Australia, so I could finally say I've visited all four hemispheres.
 
Just found an image that looks like it was done in OR for the AM-39 version of the Exocet... (complete with CG and CP markings). This is better work than I can currently do if it was.

According to the instructions there are two small strake fins (1" long by 1/8" wide), and one "long" strake (2" long by 1/8" thick), any info on them?

Also not in the photo (though none is needed) is the two 1/2" X 1/4" X 45" balsa strips that form the conduit on the rocket (though the instructions state that they are 46" long in Step 22).

This looks like a pretty awesome kit, so I took a stab at the MM40 B3 in OR as a 3" cardboard tube and plywood kit. I am not an expert yet, but it was fun to try...see attached. I modeled it based on some images that appear to be scale, transferring the measurements with some calipers.. For the vent, I dropped a set of tube fins in. They can't really be modeled as is in OR I don't think. Need to mess around with it more maybe, but at least tube fins add the mass and a little more drag.

Mike, I understand what you mean about scale models being hard to move. I don't know why, but when I am casually thinking about what kit to do next, I never think of doing a scale kit of an actual rocket or missile. No idea why, as they are always fun to build and fun to see, but for some reason, I just don't usually think of them first, and I think that's pretty common. That being said, right now I have a Wildman 4" V2 and a TLP AIM-7F on my workbench...

EDIT: After looking at the model again, I realize a bunch of the materials are wrong and the CG is way off. I was focusing on the look and didn't think to be checking that stuff as I went along, so understand if your looking at it that numbers related to or impacted by material are probably way off. I will keep working on it and upload an update when I make sense of it.
EDIT 2: Now after opening it back and looking at it, none of the "finish" specifications saved, and after updating a bunch of materials, the CG didn't move at all. First time I've been really disappointed in OR...Oh well, still has a lot of the necessary components built in if you want to keep messing with it, Jim.

I think the problem was that the file was saved as a .rkt, and not a .ork file. Saved as a .ork, OR preserves the appearance info, as a .rkt, it's usually blue (though this one was black).

I'm busy packing today, so I don't have a lot of time to spend on this right now, but I did save the file as a .ork after changing everything to flat white.

That's a beautiful missle, but definitely would be a pain to kit.

Yup. I won't attempt it until the 3d printer is done. And it won't be cheap. I've done some quick drawings and it even looks better with our standard cone on it. I may end up not doing a scale kit, but a Binder Design original based on the aft end of that thing. Super sexy ass on it.

Now that sounds like a good idea, a 3:1 NC would look good, but a 4:1 would look as good or better. Seems like most military rockets/missles that use Ogives NCs are in that range.

Hi Jim,

Here's a pic of what I'd guess are the strake fins...tiny suckers. The balsa strips came in different lengths..1 each of 22-1/2"; 22-7/8"; 25-3/16"; 25-1/2". I'd guess you glue them together into one longer strip since the box the rocket came in was 36" long.

Nope... The separation joint is at the joint between the two body tube segments. Two of the strips are the conduit aft of the joint, two are for the conduit forward of the joint. I'm guessing that at one time it was two longer pieces that you glued on, then cut to free the joint, and the previous owner chopped it down already... OR... when it was kitted, shorter lengths were used for economic reasons (you need a longer box with the 45-46" long strip).

K'Tesh is right, they span the coupler joint. Also, the best way to do them is not a butt joint but a 45 degree right at the coupler joint. Then when coupled, the joint practically disappears.
