I was surprised about the lack of a National WWII memorial and donated to build one once I found there was an effort to do so, that effort being completed in 2004. The federal government provided about $16 million. A total of $197 million was raised, so the vast majority of the cost was from private funding, the very best way to show true public appreciation.

Now, through my noticing of this anniversary I just learned of an effort to build a long overdue national WWI memorial to which I will also donate. This memorial is being built with ZERO government funding.

The last WWI US veteran was Frank Buckles who died on 27 February 2011 at age 110.

Buckles, who served as a U.S. Army ambulance driver in Europe during what was then known as the "Great War," rose to the rank of corporal before the war ended.

His assignments included that of an escort for German prisoners of war. Little did he know he would someday become a prisoner of war during World War II.

I have been to the WWII Memorial with the family, and I have tons of pictures of it. But they are all on my home PC. My kids were fascinated, especially since Granddad fought in that war.

Hard to imagine WWI being 100 years ago. Just 50 years after slavery ended, but seems like an entirely different era.

There is a World War I memorial in DC, although not a national memorial. It is located in West Potomac Park, just off Independence Avenue. It sits back off the roadway. It had fallen into a bit of disrepair, but there was an effort to fix it back up (not sure if that was ever accomplished before I left the area).

Here is the Wikipedia page on the memorial
