Here is another scratch design of mine called the VORLON 5, I've flown this design plenty of time before as I did a 5.5" version made out of glassed LOC tubing and a 3" version with a cluster of 2 29mm, Its always been a favorite of mine hence the Vorlon 5 version.

On the VORLON 5 though I amped it up quit a bit, Here are its Specs:

  • Height - 9'
  • Diameter - 5"
  • Weight - 28lbs (fully loaded No Motor)
  • Fins - 3/16 G10
  • Motor Mount - 98mm
  • All tubes are Performance Rocketry Profusion G12
  • Nose Cone - Filament wound 5:1 Ogive with Aluminum tip
  • Machined Aluminum Bulk Plates for the Av-Bay and Nose cone
  • Custom Machined Thrust Plate
  • 98mm Aeropack Retainer

All the aluminum was custom anodized by Performance Rocketry, All Bulk plates where also made by Performance Rocketry, The Thrust plate was done by SC Precision.

Epoxy used was Performance Rocketry's Pro-Line epoxy, I have to say this stuff is the best epoxy I've ever worked with I call it Black Gold, Easy to mix and work worth.

First flight is at Red Glare XI on a CTI N1800WH - Altatude was 16,772'

This may also be available in Kit form.

Very cool build. I hope to see it fly this weekend. What day are you hoping to launch?

B, Yeah the anodizing is custom.

Jim, Weather permitting I plan to launch it on Sat.

Nice - do you have a pic of the back of the sled?

Diggin' the avbay.

I see your blastcaps going into my next scratch build for sure.

Never thought of using those connectors before...

For your entertainment...

I like the looks of that build. I hope that makes it into a kit.

What is the little black thing in the center of the bulkhead?

Would you mind posting a few pictures of your nosecone setup.

It looks like you bolted your nosecone coupler on rather than gluing it?

Also are you putting a tracker in there or ???

What an amazing rocket. Well engineered.

Chuck thats a dollop of Pro-line epoxy to seal off the Av-Bay, There's a 1/4" hole in the center for the wire's to come through.

Bryce:
With the filament wound nose cones they come with a coupler/shoulder that you can either glue or bolt on, I opted for the latter.

I used #8 SS screws that I counter sunk, Did the same thing on the Av-Bay, I think its stronger this way and its easier to replace if I ever had too. Plus it just looks a hell of allot cooler lol.

1) Darn. My dollops of epoxy never look that clean. :eyepop:

2) Thank you for sharing. This is true rocket porn.

3) If it makes it into a kit: sign me up!

4) I wish Aeropack would make a 5:4 tailcone retainer.

Rocket Porn.. I was actually LOL :D

If I do it as a kit it will be sold through my Blastcap web site, More details on that to come. Thanks!

Gary, better tone it down--if you keep going, they're gonna be too pretty to launch.

Very impressive launch today. Where did you end up finding it?

Thanks Jim
Yeah it was an awesome! flight to 16,772'. The upper winds were blowing pretty stiff though so it still drifted pretty good. Had no problem finding it but was pretty far away.

Most all the higher flights were landing way out by the road or even over! the trees.

Congratulations on a beautiful, waiver-tickling flight!

Great to meet you today!

G.D.
