DARS Fall Classic Event – September 24-25

Overview
The intent of the Fall Classic is to celebrate the rockets that
started the commercial hobby, and stroll down memory lane with some
of the classic rockets that you may have owned or just wish you
owned. This event will run in parallel with the September Sport
Launch in Windom, Texas on September 24 and 25. The planned events
are as follows:

Classic Hardware Flights
Throughout both days of the launch, flying classic models will be
encouraged. The twist at this launch is the opportunity to fly
classic models off of classic hardware. When was the last time you
saw a lift off from a Centuri Servo-Launcher or an Estes Tilt-O-Pad
with an Astron Launch Control System? Flyers will have the
opportunity to launch their models off of their equipment, just like
you did in your own back yard so many years ago.

Rules for the use of classic hardware
* All launch hardware must be checked out by the Safety Check
volunteer and deemed safe for use on the range. Key area of review
will be structural integrity of launch platforms and electrical
reliability launch systems. Launch systems need to be checked out
once during the day.
* At flight time, the flyer should indicate their intention to use
classic hardware on their flight card and go through safety check in
as usual.
* The pad manager will assign them a special area of the model pads
to set up their equipment and rocket.
* At launch time the flyer will take instruction from the RSO and
press their own launch control button at the end of the standard
countdown.

Classic Beauty Contest
In addition to classic flights, DARS will host a classic rocket
beauty contest both days of the launch. Classic birds from
yesteryear will be grouped by decade and voted for by the flying
public.

Rules for the Classic Beauty Contest
* Rockets will be grouped into 4 categories: 60's, 70's, 80's, and
Open. Open will be used for post 1989 rockets and for those that
can't be identified with a date of origin. Additionally we will use
this category of upscales and downscales of classics. Rockets in the
decade categories will be grouped based on the first year the model
was introduced to the hobby. (Example: The Estes Andromeda was
introduced in 1975 and appears in the 1975 Estes catalog with the
word "New" next to it. It would then be grouped with the 70's
decade rockets.)
* The contest is open to original models and clones of those
originals.
* Bonus points – Participants can earn bonus points that are added
to their popular vote points. Points will be awarded as follows:
o Proof of rocket introduction timeframe (think ninfinger.org) – 1
point
o Displayed with launch system of the same period - 1 point
o Flyable (must be flown at the launch) - 2 points from DARS launch
system, 3 points from period launch system.
o Catalog of the same period displaying the launch system and rocket
used - 1 point
o Original unopened kit of the same period - 2 points (1 point if
opened)
o Original picture of the same period with modeler and similar
rocket - 2 points

* Participants will register their models with the contest
volunteer. The volunteer will assign the rocket to the appropriate
decade, assess bonus points, and assign a number to the model.
Flyers will vote on the rockets based on these numbers.
* Rockets will be labeled with model name, year of introduction,
number, and type (original, clone, new old stock, or modified (some
original parts)). Labels will be provided at the site.
* Rockets will be displayed on tables throughout the day. Models
can be checked in or out at any time. Participants must secure
their models to the tables to avoid damage due to wind, etc. Tape
will be provided.
* Rockets can be presented for registration at any time during the
day, but voting closes promptly 3:00 pm each day. Votes will be
tallied and winners announced. You need not be present to win.
* Prizes will be awarded to the winner of each decade and the open
category for each day of the launch. Prizes TBD.
