These are some of my favorite videos posted by Contrail long ago; They are of the test sessions performed by Tripoli and Contrail. In most cases I liked them for the long burn characteristics... but then there is just something about those sweet looking sparkies too...

Of course their complete line-up of motor test videos can be seen here:

So what is funny to note, is how many times the testers jumped when the motor came up, and how hard they tried to muffle the noise with the palm of their hands... why no ear muffs, like is required at a gun range...(?) Too Funny!

Just sat next to it! Looks all rather redneck mounted to some I beam and what looks like barrels of water to keep it in place.

Translation into American English please?

Dead. It was a stop gap due to the loss of AT, CTI taking forever too be allowed in the EU or UK and the amount of paper work needed to fly AP. Hybrids came, went and I've yet to meet anyone that's flying them.

1 shop went that was a big player with them but they went for a mass of reasons.

1 others stocked to the eyes with stuff https://www.gbrockets.co.uk/store/motors.html

Getting N20 is not so easy either. It's also not cheap!

Flop = fail

And if you want to step into the wonderful world of hybrids, I have a full set of Contrail 38mm motors / accessories / reloads on sale here: https://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?69703-Hybrid-Motor-Bonanza&p=761185#post761185.

I would love to have had that I80 with reloads... and I wish the Contrail goodies were 54mm

Redneck!!! Since it worked, that would be a compliment to the rednecks...

I followed much of the hybrid stuff in the UK... you guys were really pioneering some interesting flights. Too bad it was only a stop gap, much like what we experienced here after 2009...

True but it's not exactly correct is it when 90% here will follow the rules and by the book but these get to play with fire. Credit were it's due it did work and was impressive holding an M for that length of time. I wouldn't of been stood that close so true testament to the product.

Some good project used it due to costs. Biggest one known is this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJdrlWR-yFM and then this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSDfR4NTly4

Well, certainly not a flop in other parts of the EU: https://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?57106-CONTRAIL-HYBRID-CLUSTER&highlight=hybrid+cluster.

John,

FANTASTIC VIDEO!!!!

*applause*

these Contrail sparkies are just awesome. But 8 sec burn for the K 265 is maybe a bit optimistic ;-)

I am testing the new mix this weekend.

Please more videos from your hybridz please :)

Denis

The post was awful so I posting video again. Hybrids rock! Flight from just this last weekend.

Thanks Denis, I am also following in your footsteps and plan to build and fly a 3 cluster K265 at LDRS next year.

Also I agree, 8 sec of thrust is optimistic but 8 sec of burn is in the video..... Look at video, ignition at 1:20, last flame seen from motor 1:29.

John ...who cares ...the thrill and adrenaline effect feel like 8 hours for every hybrid flyer ;-)

But once you start clustering these contrails..you can't stop... look at me *lol*... On saturday I will fly same fuel in the smaller 36' casing (x3) but with higher nozzle speed. Just wondering the sound and picture...

Please keep posting on your hybrid projects, I feel less lonely *lol*.

Anyway I need to learn from you how to fix properly a video cam on the bird. I pissed my pants so far...

I used electrical tape. The next rocket will have a more "elegant" mount.

Very nice flight and video... I'm not a huge fan of the sprky, but things can change.

That's about what I counted, love the long burn characteristic of most hybrids.

The 36" motors should be spectacular Denis, looking forward to the flight video(s)

What is the camera you taped to that rocket?
