Has anyone had any luck painting an AeroPack/Slimline retainer? How did it work out? I'm considering sanding/priming/painting like the rest of the rocket, but I'm not sure if it will work. Obviously I need to keep the threaded part clean.

I have done it a number of times, both Slimline traditional and tailcones. Just use a metal primer and lightly sand with 220 grit or so and then put on color coats with the rest of the rocket. I have seen little to no chipping from landings and/or motor heat.

Aeropack retainers are anodized (2-25 micron anodization layer thickness), so I would imagine that sanding takes some or all of that layer off. I would just go straight to priming to keep the anodization on there.

Or have it reanodized or powder coated in the color of your choice.
