Funny, I went to that same sportsman's off of 65 on Friday... no .22LR. Lots of everything else though!

What .22 shortage?

I picked up a box of 300 CCI AR Tactical at the CalExpo gunshow today. Paid $75 which was way more than wanted to but it's very hard to find.

Today I learned to save the plastic CCI boxes as they can be sold on PayPal for $5 a whack.

Find out when walmart and other local stores get shipments. $75 for bulk ammo is insane.

There are several WalMarts where I live and multiple gun shops/big box sporting goods stores but high demand ammo is very difficult to get.

Trust me when I tell you there are people lined up outside these stores on ammo delivery day before the stores open and strict three box limits are enforced.

It's worse than trying to buy the latest iPod on release day.

Unfortunately, most online vendors will not sell to me because I live in an unincorporated county with the same name as a nearby city that bans mailorder ammo sales. Even worse, a very tiny part of my ZIP code lies within that city's limits.

Welcome to Socialist California.

I think I need to go to Intermountian Arms here and check the prices again, $75 sounds real high. Maybe it's because CCI is up in Lewiston, ID we get supplied before anyone else and cheaper or so it seems. I haven't been there in a while, I got like 950 rounds right now and don't shoot like I used to. Not as long as I'm enjoying the CO2 .22 so much :)

The world has gone off the deep end. $75 for 300 rounds of 22LR?

Insanity. Absolute insanity.

Is it legal for individuals to sell ammunition in Kalifornia? Cuz I could make some serious coin...

I paid $30 for a brick of Blazer 22lr (500 rds) and $60 a brick for SK Rifle Match, also 500rds ea (bought four bricks). I own roughly about 3500 rds of 22lr, and am darn lucky to have it. My deepest void is trying to find a decent pistol powder I can use for my 38 special reloading venture. There is a neat little shop just outside of Nashville, TN called The Reloaders Bench... when they get pistol powder in, they sell out that morning of it hitting the shelves... even at a min of 2lbs per person max.

I did find some 38 special ammo at Academy Sports for $17 a box of 50... bought two boxes. My wife questions why I look for ammo every where I go (?) When is enough enough(?) I told her that the two boxes of 38 that I had just purchased will not last a fraction of my time at the range... I expalined that in order to become good at shooting, you have to shoot alot!!! Until I can get more range time scheduled in, my safe stays kind loaded with ammo... which is still not enough. I did point out to her that one box of 38 special was cheaper than most "G-Class" rocket motors, and I can shoot 50 times instead of just one... she gets this glazed look in her eye...

Clearly, there's a problem in this country. However, much like the war on drugs, bans and laws aren't going to help. I think education, better security at schools, and help for depression are certainly needed. I don't think it's so much a firearms problem as a society problem. Firearms are just the tools used.

See the Nizkor Project's summary of logical fallacies.

The video you posted is an example of "Appeal to Emotion" rather than a fact-based argument.

Nizkor Project: Appeal to Emotion

I point out that most statistics used by those who would ban firearms skew their "child" death figures by stretching the range to include young adults, i.e. 1-24 years of old. That expanded range includes suicides and gang/drug violence.

The best statistics to check are those published annually by the FBI which pretty much refute those "compiled" by the anti-2nd Amendment industry and those cited by our President. The crime rate is falling and gun crime/deaths are at an all-time low. Yes, an all-time low.

Now back to our regularly scheduled discussion of Rockets and Guns already in progress.

Kit- I agree. Most of the research I've done on the CDC website strongly disagrees with those stats.

There is an issue, as overblown as the video was. I was just playing nice.

Well, I'm not gonna play nice. I'm gonna call it like I see it.

From the late 1890's until 1968, one could buy a rifle and ammunition thru the mail. All that was needed was a catalog, a money order, and a stamp. A week later, there's a box on the front porch. But we didn't see mall, school, or theater shootings. Today, legal weapons transfers require more paperwork than payday at NASA after a moon shot, but we've got nutbags coming out of the woodwork, harming children.

So, what's different? In the late 1970's, they de-funded mental health care, and shut down all the asylums. Today, mental health care comes in a little plastic bottle. A dangerous little plastic bottle, some with extremely crucial dosing requirements. Joe Nutbag misses a dose, and he goes off the deep end.

Three weeks after the Connecticut tragedy, Phil McGraw had a family on his show with an absolutely psycho 15 year old son. Kid was setting fire to the house, chasing the mother with shears trying to stab her, destroying everything in the house, and the cops told them "We can't do anything unless he commits a felony, lady. Call a doctor." So they did. McGraw and his guest doctor agreed the list of meds they gave this kid was completely inappropriate. Said half his brain is over-amping, the other half is shutting down, so the doctors prescribed stimulants. Said it was way wrong.

I'm no doc. I don't know if McGraw was right or not, but I do know that when that kid goes off the deep end and hurts someone, everyone is going to wonder why. I know why. It's because that kid belongs in a rubber room, with the door locked. But they don't have a rubber room for him, or any of the multitude of others just like him.

Want to do something about the state of affairs in the US? Take mental heath care out of that little plastic bottle and put it back where it belongs... Behind a dead-bolt.

Okay, bringing us back on track now...

I picked up this lovely Russian PU Sniper rifle produced by the Tula armory back in 1943...

I worked the stock over a bit, as it was pretty flaky in spots...

It would seem that I need a better camera, as pukebucket is degrading the quality of the uploaded images...

This upper handguard is a replacement that I picked up from Liberty Tree Collectors... the original was a little too rough for this project, I will keep it as a spare...

The final outcome was more than I could hope for...

I corrected some of the parts, as the rifle was a mix bag of Tula and Izhevsk (not Izzy) parts. I managed to find most of the Tula parts to correct the rifle, save for the scope mount. I have not shot the rifle much, as our field still has beans in it... but once picked, I will get in some home-on-the-range time.

It's a beauty now :) Any WW2 era Rooski would be proud to carry it. Made in '43 then it could have a "history"... Wonder if it made it to Berlin?

I'm guessing that there are a lot of new shooters out there who are new to the sport, which leads to the increased demand for ammo. Plus there are a lot of hoarders and folks out to make a quick buck reselling at a markup. There are soon going to be a lot of floor boards caving in from all that ammo. The sad part is kids aren't getting to learn how to shoot because folks are buying up .22LR who don't really need it.

Thankfully our scouts through the NRA are sponsored and .22LR has not been an issue.
BTW, did you get your copy of the latest rocketry mag? :)

Late in July I purchased a Ruger 10/22 50th Annivesary Design Contest Rifle. I bought it because it's pretty. I'm going to replace the sights, add sling, and take it to an Appleseed event. Yes, there are more better 10/22's for Appleseed like the 10/22 Target or aftermarket barrels and triggers. I shoot and fly rockets for the same reason: fun.
Later, if I feel like it, I can hunt down a used 10/22 and spec the heck out if it. When I decide to do that, I'll let you know.
I also have my dad's Remmington 550-1 tube-fed auto-loading .22. He bought it for $12 at an ACE Hardware store for just a few dollars way back when. It probably has not been fired in 40 years. I did just clean it though.
I have others, but do not feel inclined to post what else I own.
Finally, my son just finished his first NRA traing class, First Steps I think it was called.

10/22's are like jeeps.... when you finish building one you have an entire extra jeep in the parts box.

10/22's are America's gun.

Mention it by name and everyone pipes up "Hey, I have one of those."

Over 5 million have been manufactured since release in 1964.

Mine's an International model with the Mannlicher stock and looks like this...

On their 14th birthday every boy should be issued a 10/22, a Remington 870, and a 1911.

Funny, I've never owned a 10/22. Taught my wife to shoot on my Winchester single shot .22, then a 9mm, then an AR. The grin on her face after shooting the AR was priceless.

Same here, never owned one. Friend had one, the action felt "funny" to me. I started with a passed-down-to-me Western Field .22 pump with an octagon barrel. I still have it more than 50 years later along with the other two Western Field longarms given to me, a .32-20 pump rifle and a 16 gauge shot gun. Later on came a 6" Ruger Security 6 .357 Magnum double action revolver that I put a Bushnell Phantom 2.3x scope to lazer jackrabbits :D I never put a factory round through it, 6000 rounds and it was just getting broken in when I had to sell it D: And the previously mentioned Stevens .22

I never really thought about it, I got 5 guns right now with the air rifle. Never thought it was that many. It's like having a set of wrenches, each wrench fills a different need.

Nice Old Dude I have always liked that style and really like the laminated stock!! My 10-22 started as a walnut stocked Mannlicher and now the only Ruger part left is the receiver. Also not a .22 after I got a .17 Mach ll barrel for it. I still have a 22-250 international that's a blast to shoot, and I mean a blast, WAY to short of a barrel for that caliber but tons of fun
