Hi everyone. So this question came up today. What is the volume of Estes D size motors ejection gases? Any ideas?

Estes some time ago stated that their motors contain the following amounts of black powder:

13mm motors - 0.4g
18mm motors - 0.6g
24mm motors - 1.0g

This might sound like a lot for small-size rocket, keep in mind that not all the gas pressurizes the body tube, part of it escapes through motor that has burnt through.

The ejection gases are hot and initially at high pressure and are likely to destroy the balloon. The volume is also temperature dependent. When the gas is hot, both the volume and pressure is higher than after it has expanded and cooled. Do a ground test before you fly it.
