I'm painting mine to look like a pain pill if I can get the design right...

I'm interested in seeing it when the paint is done, as the name of the rocket implies, so it would make sense to color it like a pain pill.

Yeah I'm hoping Krylon will work I might have to try rust oleum

Finally got all the internal fillets done, I'll start on the external fillets in a few days, I did get the Aeropack retainer on, the grease that I put in the screw holes worked, no epoxy plugged up the holes so I don't have to re-tap the holes.

This is the same retainer that I used for this rocket.

I launched this at Red Glare and got 5,553' on a K550, my personal best so far.

29 mm inside a 54 mm motor tube. I can fly this rocket from 29 mm up to 54 mm motors.

What size 29mm size motor would lift this kit off the pad and how high????????????

Well, I used helium infused epoxy to make this kit really lite so I can fly this on the smallest 29 mm motor.

I used this

To fill in the holes that I drilled to do the internal fillets. When I get motivated, I'll start on the external fillets then I'll finish up the av bay.

All done. I will have to sand and apply Elmer's wood filler to get a really smooth fillet ready for paint

Got all the external fillets done, I'll let this set for at least a day then sand and apply some Elmer's wood filler then sand some more.

All taped up and ready for Bondo filler, I didn't have any Elmer's wood filler so I tried this.

The tape keeps everything clean.

All fillets done, next will be sanding. Most of the Bondo will be sanded off when I'm finished.

Got all the fin fillets sanded, I would like to start to paint, but I have to ground test the separation charge for drouge and main chute.

While writing on another thread about how to ground test a single deploy rocket, that gave me a great idea, instead of using the Quest motor starter for the ground test, I'll use Christmas light bulbs thus saving the Quest motor starter for the actual deployment of the parachute, I'll post photos some time this week.

I finally got a chance to download the Painkiller rocsim file and doing some launches with different motors, the maiden flight will be on an Aerotech J500, now the CTI L985 got me thinking about breaking the 2 mile mark, which is something that i want to do, so far my personal best is 5,553 feet, I done that launch without a tracker. should I use a tracker for my 2 mile attempt? which tracker should I consider? I do not have a hamm licence so it will have to be one that dose not require one to use. More then likely I'll be doing the attempt at the spring red glare in 2015 at MDRA.

J500 is a sweet motor. That L985 might take some work to fit in there.... eyebolts and harnesses and stuff. I do have some ideas involving a lot of pem nuts, head end deploy and a loki 54/2800 case when I get mine (monday!!!!).... we'll see I might just build it stock and use 54/1706 loads.

Naw. no need for a tracker at 2 miles....you've got good eyes right? (if you come up to any URRG launches this aug/fall I'll let you check out my BRB900. Weather permitting I'm gonna kick it up to 10K) I'll even let you test out recovering a (my) rocket using it! :)

Thanks for the offer, but it's a 6 hour drive (one way) for me. I did some research on the motor and reload case for said motor and I'm looking at around $350, that's a lot of money but I do need the case for my 1/2 scale Patriot so I can launch it on L motors, maybe 2015 would fair better work wise then 2014

Success. I got to do the ground test not only for the PainKiller 3 rocket but also for my SpaceToaster rocket as well, I do have video of both drouge and main chute deployment. Both rockets used 1.3 grams for main chute deployment and 1.5 grams for drouge chute deployment.
I'll post the videos on you tube and post links here once I figure out how to do that.

Got a little more done on the av bay, 1" may not seem a lot, but it sure makes a difference when adding things to the av bay. I still need to wire up the av bay and paint the rocket, not sure if I want to paint the nose tip or not.

I finally got a chance to work on the rocket, got the av bay wired up and is good to go. I still haven't decided if I'm going to paint the nose cone tip yet, your thoughts on this dilemma?

If you're looking for a good metallic blue and don't mind spending a bit more for paint, go with the testors "De Ja Blue". It is an excellent color and always comes out looking sharp. I used the lime ice on my leviathon and it came out perfect. ImageUploadedByRocketry Forum1407033975.801725.jpg

That's nice, but that's something I can not afford right now.

Got the first coat of primer on, I've decided to go ahead and paint the nose cone tip.
I wanted to use white primer for the blue paint, but since I can not afford to buy paint right now, and since I have plenty of gray primer and white paint, I'll put a few coats of gray primer followed by a few coats of white paint then I'll follow that up with the two blues that I chosen to use as a final coat.

I agree with affordability. At just over 4$ for a little 4 oz can, that is the reason why most of my rockets are naked right now.

I love the testors one coat metallics, but I've gone over to Duplicolor paints, much more per can. (looking into airbrushing next)

though most of my rockets get painted "whatever color I still have on the shelves in the garage" When I did Emerald Dragon, I spent a year stockpiling cans of mystic emerald one at a time.

Yea I've been getting into using a air gun to do my painting recently. Duplicolor is very easy to use cause it's all mixed perfectly for my gun. Every now and then I'll throw in some house of color metal flake that I've had from YEARS ago. Seems to work perfectly.

What kind of primer do you use with the dupli-color metalcast?

See the ground coat on the right? that'll work as a primer. It's a two-part system. First the sparkle ground coat, then the thin color coat over it.

I typically use whatever is sitting around to fill/prime before ground coating it.
