This last weekend, the local TRA chapter held a launch at one of the many "mini-playas" that dot the area. The organizers, Justice Bradley and David Walden, obtained a 6,000' waiver and worked hard with the local land owner - the property had been unavailable for use for a long time. Kudos!
Mike Motta sets up for the day.
One of the morning highlights was some motor testing by Aidan & Cliff Sojourner. Here's the first test, early into the burn:
Shock diamonds and super heated air! What a show.
There were lots of great flights, too. It seemed we had more local flyers coming out than ever. Something else that was great was excited spectators, too - all safely behind the flight line, of course.
Smiles: spectators watch another flight. Who knows how many future flyers come from these events?
Bay Area Rocketry made the long trek up to Reno to support the launch as the on-site vendor. How amazing is that? A big THANK YOU to Bay Area Rocketry!
Janet Flenner goes shopping for 54mm motors in the Bay Area Rocketry trailer.
Having a nice wide open space is priceless. Here Jack Walden chases down his Estes EPM-010 after a great flight.
It might be far, but smooth playa makes it seem like a quick trip.
Justice Bradley (R) loads his LED night rocket for a flight.
Launch of Bradley's LED rocket for a perfect flight.
Aidan Sojourner poses next to the test stand he and his father, Cliff, constructed.
Kevin Clifford positions a video camera as he preps for a flight.
Prolific: Another flight by Justice Bradley.
Ouch: The same rocket descends for a landing. The rock-hard playa caused a broken fin on landing.
Starting the kids early: Jack Walden helps carry back Bradleys' rocket.
Last but not least: Kevin Clifford launches his DX3 for a L2 cert attempt.
These launches will be held monthly for the rest of the year. Come and enjoy!
All the best, James
