Any one use epoxy clay to attach rail buttons ? How does it work for you? Is it easy to smooth it over the protruding screw end?

No, but I have used plain epoxy with just a little piece of 1oz fiberglass cloth and that worked out really well. I'd imagine that the epoxy clay might be a little to thick in order to get it smoother down in a light coat.
 
I have used it on the inside to cover the screw tip. It works.
