AeroTech Displays 38mm High Power RMS Reload Adapter System at XPRS 2009

AeroTech displayed a new reload adapter system for its 38mm high power RMS™ motors during the XPRS launch in the Black Rock Desert near Gerlach, NV held September 17-21.

The system allows the use of shorter (lower power) RMS reload kits within a specific motor casing, reducing the number of cases necessary to fly a wide range of AeroTech reloads. The new system is similar in concept to AeroTech's model rocket and R/C RMS motors that use "grain adapters" within the combustion chamber to permit the use of different length and power reloads within each motor case. However, the new high power adapter system is external to the combustion chamber and actually allows the use of the same reload within multiple case lengths, and also permits one case to house different length reloads.

The reload adapter system consists of three components: A new "floating" forward closure that can be positioned anywhere inside the length of an RMS casing; one or more tubular "case spacers" that sit immediately forward of the closure; and a threaded retaining ring that holds the assembly together. The standard retaining ring has a large opening that permits the ejection charge end of the floating forward closure to protrude beyond the end of the case when no grain spacers are being used.

An optional "anchor" retaining ring will be made available that includes a 5/16-18 threaded anchor point for the attachment of an eyebolt or other recovery system retention. This ring may only be used when one or more spacers are present. The floating forward closure has been designed with a deeper ejection charge well that allows the use of heavier ejection charges and also permits the placement of the ejection charge cap within the well instead of only on top of it.

Existing AeroTech reload kits can be loaded into motors using the reload adapter system with no modifications necessary. All reload kit parts are used in their familiar positions and configuration.

The primary advantage to using the adapter system is cost. Consumers will be able to fly reloads spanning a range of six (or more) cases by using only two RMS casings. This translates to a hardware savings of nearly $140. A slight disadvantage is that motors loaded with the adapter system will be approximately 1.9" longer and 50 grams heavier per case spacer used. AeroTech is recommending a maximum of two case spacers be installed in a particular motor for ease of assembly, but there is no technical reason why a larger number of spacers could not be used.

The 38mm reload adapter system will be sold as a package which includes the floating forward closure, two case spacers and the standard retaining ring for an introductory price of $29.99, P/N 38RAS. The anchor retaining ring will be sold separately for $19.99, P/N 38FCRRA.

AeroTech is currently designing similar systems for its 29 & 54mm high power RMS motors. It remains to be seen whether an adapter system for its 75 & 98mm motors has market potential, as the added weight penalty for these systems is significantly larger.

AeroTech is working with the Tripoli Rocketry Association to approve the new adapter system and make it available to consumers as quickly as possible. A test plan is being negotiated and certification should be completed by mid-October. Additional news will be released and posted to the AeroTech website at https://www.aerotech-rocketry.com as it becomes available.

I saw this demo'd yesterday, with a 38/480 I285 (IIRC) flown in a 38/600 casing. The rocket used motor ejection. Everything flew normally.

New HP flyers have an embarrassment of riches - no need for a LEUP, a LOT of motors to choose from, and now they don't even need to buy a full collection of casings.

Looks awesome! Great for Minimum Diameter kits that employ Motor ejection, Before you had no place to connect your shock cord (not easily anyway), Now just use the next case size up and attach an eye bolt.

Gee Gary, I wonder how that idea came to your mind...
